Cautiously Optimistic
« on: August 04, 2006, 08:13:29 am »
Yesterday in the TN primary Harold Ford Jr. became the first African-American since reconstruction to be nominated as the Democratic candidate for the US Senate from TN. Hopefully, Mr. Ford's election this fall will enable the Democrats to regain control over the Senate.

I am cautiously optimistic that America has had enough of this inept, vile, administration. I urge every Aidsmeds member who is not registered to vote to do so. If we are not part of the solution...

Peace,
Hal

p.s. Jack I'm warning you...mention the C-word and I will drive to Houston and kick your... :P

Hal, I have long been a supporter of Harold Ford, but not as senator, for President. Ford is one the few reasonable democrats. He is pro business. He is conservative on fiscal matters and in the middle on social issues. He is probably to the right of W on government spending, of course that wouldn't be difficult.
He has been a regular guest on CNBC squawk box show for several years and I think he is great. He is a breathe of fresh air and a guy I think who could take a lot of national republican votes. Republicans are disgusted by the spending habits of the people they put in office and want an alternative. Ford is the man. He has done little Monday morning quarterbacking in the war on terror as so many of the present democratic candidates have done, trading national security for political gain. Ford has not done this.
Unfortunately for Ford, since he isn't a far lefty or maybe cause he isn't white, the dems haven't given him the time of day and if he wins a Senate seat it will end any hope of him as President.  I think Kennedy was the last senator to become President and that was probably cause he was sick so much he didn't have much of a voting record. Oh, I forgot, one of the votes he did show up to was Civil Rights, which he voted against. That won him the democrat nomination.
Right now we are looking at whack jobs like mccain, hillary, scarey, gore. Ford is head and shoulders above them all.

you all can laugh. I have been sending Fords office emails for three years begging him to run for president. I would have voted for him in last pres election and in the next one. I just don't think he is far enough to the left to gain support on national Dem ticket. Its a fucking shame. He is the right guy at the right time and would win it all.

Kinky for Governor of Texas. just because.

I like Kinky to, and I don't even live in Texas. I've seen him many times on Imus in the morning.
I have also come to respect Ford. Wish we had more like him.

Harold Ford needs to get married first before he can think about running for Prez.  Though he won't win.  Too many people would vote against him, just because of his color alone.  Anyhow, I wouldn't be so elated about him, since he is against gay rights and supports a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.  He also supports the war in Iraq.  But who knows if that's how he really feels about those issues, or if he's just trying to gain some conservative white votes.

I think he's gay.  He needs a new hair style.  That kind of fade is for 25 year-olds.

Well clearly Hell has frozen over cause I find myself in agreement with Jack on a political issue (outside of the fiscal matters that is).

Harold Ford is bright, articulate, fiscal conservative (or so it appears), social moderate and clearly stands above some of the others (in both parties I might add).

I hope the voters in Tennessee sweep him into office (Frist's retirement?  Will that help or hinder his chances since the seat won't be defended by an incumbent?)

Your points on some of his positions are correct.  But no candidate is ever going to be everything I want.  Whatever differences I have he's 1000 times better than Frist.

So far Ford is polling very well. TN will surprise you...it is very independent and not as conservative as people think. The Republican war-machine has not cranked up...but I suspect it to become very dirty. It is going to hinge on voter turnout...people are very excited about young Mr. Ford.

Fingers crossed.

Ford does not support the war in Iraq...he has stated he would not have voted for the war if he knew now what he knew then. He has taken some positions that I don't agree with, but who hasn't. Ford is a big D Democrat from a long line of Democrats. You are putting the cart before the horse touting his presidential aspirations. Cliff, don't worry the Republicans will start the gay whispering campaign.

None of us is ever gonna get the exact candidate we want, but I am tired of voting against people rather than voting for people. Ford,as of this moment, is the only guy out there I could vote "for". I do not agree with him on many issues, but for some reason I think he can be trusted, doesn't deal in bullshit and he understands the free market.
There is also no person running for office who won't be subject to rumor and innuendo. Both parties have been doing it since Jefferson ran for president.
The Senate is a graveyard for those aspiring to be president. One of the reasons we keep getting governors as presidents because they have no federal voting record for their opponents to attack and they can hide the mess they made as governors.(see bush and waskally willy).
