two HIV positive people in a relationship
« on: October 20, 2011, 09:56:26 pm »
I know you guys are not medical but you may know more than those that are medical. Just wondering. If two HIV positive people are in a relationship can they possibly give each other a different strain of HIV and cause their conditions to be worse?  This is of course if they think that since that are both positive they do not  have to use protection. That is why I am asking this question.  I think Hep C , has several different genotypes so maybe one an get different hep c viruses, don't know about t hat either. I think HIV can mutate this different viruses. Just wondering about the HIV virus and what anyone has heard.  I have searched on line and did not find a good answer.

The possibility of superinfection is there, but as long as both partners are on medication and their viral loads are undetectable, the risk is very low. Nevertheless, they are two consenting adults and if they choose to continue having unprotected sex, there really isn't much one can do. Afaik, superinfection is very rare, for what it's worth.

Here's an excellent thread on superinfection. There's also the search function on the top.

Superinfection is as common as getting hit by an airplane engine while sitting in your living room.
