Flu shots are like HIV meds - they gotta make ya sick to make ya better I guess....damn things!

I got a flu shot in one arm - pneumonia in the other - not sure which it was but one of them caused a big bump, was sore as hell and turned a nice purple for a few weeks. Hope it was kicking the shit out of something nasty in my body :)

Anyway - sorry you're suffering - hope it's all better soon so you can get back to making artistic movies for us.

Awww, you poor baby. I know when I first started getting my flu shots, I would throw up and be done with it. This last time I got one, I just had a bad headache and a slight fever. I always wondered how it is good for you if it makes you sick but my doc says we need them.

Puertorico,

My doc usually makes sure I get my round of Hep shots which include A, B, and C. Don't be surprised if you have to get them numerous times too because sometimes they don't take. I also had to get a T.B. test done as well. Ask your doc about them to see but just putting my 2 cents out there.

The flu shot does not give you the flu... did you take tylenol as if you had the flu after the vaccine was given. You probally already had some other bug that was just getting ready to let you know it was visiting. good luck!

Tucsonwoody- Sounds like an abscess.  It is common for someoene who is incorrectly prepared for an injection (for instance, IV drug users who don't know what they're doing - or a ditzy nurse who forgets where she wiped with the alcohol) to develop an abscess. An abscess is what happens when your body basically builds a bubble around an infection in order to protect itself - as it attempts to isolate and attack the toxic nugaty center (tm) of the infection.  There are two types - sterile - which can be the effect of drugs that are remaining stagnant in tissue - which usually result in knots from the internal scarring of the tissue, and -septic- which are bacterial in nature and can result in the same scarring.  Sometimes improperly mixed medications (or illegal drugs), if they are not fluid enough, can sometimes travel to different parts of your body - if they don't desolve, and become an abscess weeks or months later.  You should have gone to the doctor to have it looked at.  This is NOT a common side effect of either the flu or the pneumonia shot.  I would still let my doctor know.

Jeremy- You can't get the flu from the shot.  however, some people DO experience flu-like symptoms (or symptoms like those of any other cold) as their body goes through the process of developing antibodies to the dead virus within the injection.  These symptoms can include fever, body aches, runny nose...  The symptoms can vary in recovery time and magnitude depending on one's immune system and general health.  Most people don't experience anything at all, although it can take up to two weeks to develop a resistance to your injection.  Mind you, your flu shot DOES NOT prevent you from catching other colds (which may have the same symptoms).

And, hospitals and clinics are the easiest places to take illness (literally).  I avoid them as much as possible.

Hi Jeromy,

I never take the Flu Shot.  It seems like for the past few years, the CDC  has not been accurate on their predictions and/or there has been a shortage on Flu shots or a possible contamination at the manufacturing plant.  But mostly... I had a date with a guy who was at the time Mr. Right.  We were going to have dinner with his family at the Ritz Carlton Laguna Niguel.  He stopped for a flu shot on the way to business in Palm Springs and spent the week in bed with the Flu.

His Dr. said something like, Can you imagine how bad the Flu would have been without the shot?  Chicken Soups the game and I never got to have dinner at the Ritz Carlton.  Have the best day
Michael

Hello Pozguy75,

Sorry to hear you are dealing with the flu.  I took a flu shot for the first time last month. After the shot, I came home and took two advils, not because I was feeling bad but I didn't know how I was going to react to the shot.  Please take care of your self and feel better soon.

But seriously how did you get sick it is a dead virus. I stopped seeing this fireman because he thought I could give him the flu after getting the shot. I guess it mimicks the disease, yet I have never experience psuedo flu.

Hey Jeromy,

Sorry to hear about your Flu symptoms. The most important thing now is to take care of YOU. When I took my shot, I did get a small tad of the sniffles but other than that it was OK.

I've had flu shots for years.  My dad is a Dr. and we always pretty much followed his advice on things like that.  I've had the flu once in the past 6 years despite having the shot.  There are a couple of drugs that you can take (within 24 hours) that all but eliminate the symptoms.  My ID Dr. also wanted me to have a pneumonia vaccine... too bad there's not one for PCP!   ;)

David -

You are 110% right about the PCP - that stuff sucks doesn't it?  Thank God or whoever for Bactrim.

Hope you are feeling and breathing better.

Hey Jeromy,

I had the icks (that's a technical term for feeling crappy) for a couple of days after my flu shot. It will pass.

Drink plenty of fluids, chicken broth, etc., get rest and get better.

HUGS,

Mark

Mark-

tell me about it.  I was immunized for hep A and B at the same time, but B didn't take, and now I have to take my third and final shot for it in march.  :(  I'm with ya. :(

Well, went to the doctor today...and as luck would have it...NOT the flu, but some other thing they can't identify...put me on antibiotics and sent me on my way...fun stuff...still running a mid grade fever of about 100-101 feeling altogether lousy!

So, I am home again, working from the house, cause they say I am still infectious!! LOL...already new that! Oh and in the last 3 days alone, I have lost about 6 pounds...I have really no appetite but I am working on it...

Anyway, going to run to the pharmacy now to get my antibiotics in me...

I love you all, and thanks for the support you guys!

I've gotten the flu shot probably for the last 10 years, the one year I couldn't get one I got the worest flu ever..... having never been sick before that was the one time that I felt like I wasn't going to make it... needless to say I get one as early as possible each year.
HIV + since June 1990, probably got infected 6 months before.
