I was gonna make some joke about how this made me cry, but then I realized I was talking about an infant and it just seemed creepy.

The only way to bring up children is to eat them first.

Maybe it could be the band around a pillbox hat, Jackie O style.

Making jokes about Jackie O is just tasteless and I don't do tasteless material.

That said, I was thinking of something more in this vein:

Can't they sew it back on? Someone needs to call Dr. 90210.

Our hospital has adopted what are called "Red Rules" from the nuclear power industry to help reduce these kinds of mistakes. One of the rules is prior to any invasive procedure there is a "time out" where everyone reviews and makes sure they are doing the correct procedure and not missing anything.

His family shouldn't dispair . I was able to yank me a new foreskin after being circumcised , it took 40 years but I managed .

They also have a pill for everthing these days , there is even one for disciplining children . I think its called the morning after pill .

I've heard about the foreskin restoration stuff before but I can't say I'm convinced.  Even if you stretch the skin it won't convert to the type of skin found in an actual foreskin, eh?  Not to mention I would assume the process would be fairly painful and involve a lot of weights and tape etc...

Wasn't there some news a few years ago about men trying to 'reclaim' their foreskins?  Not sure how you do that.

Since the invention of scented wet wipes, I'm not sure why there's still the need to have a snip.

I really don't see ANY humour in this. Circumcision of babies is a barbaric practice. Are you aware that the foreskin is actually sorta fused to the head of the penis in newborns? And it has to be literally ripped away so it can be cut off? It's not "a little snip", it's an amputation.

Check this out.

In fact, check out the whole site.

If I were this boy's mother, I would be suing too. That hospital committed a error of great magnitude and should be made to pay. Circumcising newborns should be outlawed.

And before anyone trots out the whole thing about circumcision helping to prevent hiv infection, that's actually a pretty controversial idea and the studies don't support it quite as much as we're being led to believe.

Besides, cut or uncut, condoms are still the best way to prevent hiv infection.

Good for you Ann bringing up the facts!

If we did this to girls there would be outrage, but it is the most common surgical procedure done in the USA.
Pulling the skin from the head of the penis is equal to pulling off a fingernail as they are fused together.

John Harvey Kellogg started promoting the practice to discourage masturbation!
(Masturbation is the worst sin...)
Kellogg said circumcision would prevent masturbation, cancer, kleptomania, insanity and the list goes on and on.
The study done showing circumcision decreased the spread of HIV is bogus,
it is just another attempt to justify the mutilation of our boys.

For anyone wanting to grow back that which was stolen from them, you can do it easily.
I was cut but have grown it back without pain or meds.
If you are interested I have put a few links that show what it will look like and the devices I have used.

Also never use any product that requires tape.

Just as female circumcision is more correctly known as female genital mutilation, so should male circumcision be correctly called male genital mutilation. I feel very strongly against both practices.

I first researched male genital mutilation when I was pregnant and there was no way on earth I would have allowed a male child of mine to undergo this barbarism. I really feel the outrage of this boy's mother. I really do.

I read some of the stuff earlier about re-growing a foreskin and I think if I were a guy who had been mutilated like this, I'd probably try it. Seriously. Only problem is, you'll never, ever get back the more sensitive nerves of the foreskin and the glans will never fully recover from the keritinisation.

This mutilation should be outlawed, even for those of the Jewish faith. Both female and male genital mutilation are human rights issues - are Jews not any more deserving of having this human right protected?

Don't get me wrong - if a full grown man wants to opt for circumcision, that's his right. What I would like to see outlawed is the forced circumcision of baby and young boys who have no say in what's happening.

Just thought I'd clarify that. :)

Ann, thats for that link. Totally gruesome, I never really thought about what most American guys my age went through.  (At least they left me some frenum, thanks!)

Those pictures say it all. I bet most people just aren't aware how horrible it really is for the kid. And all those botched possibilities. Ick.

Muslim guys are cut too, by the way, like Jews.

Yes, forgot to include them in my rant about outlawing genital mutilation. Their human right to not be mutilated should also be protected, and for pretty much the same reasons as the Jews because it's the same reasoning.

Kinda ironic, when you think about it, but that's a whole other thread entirely.

I actually started the thread because I always find hospital mix ups concerning surgery to be slightly horrifying.  I am totally and completely dead set against circumcision unless later in life complications arise and it's a necessary evil.  I've known a guy who was in his 40s who had to get cut but that's a totally different story from an infant.  I would not have chosen to be circumcised had I been given a choice.  Oh well.

I always wondered how and why circumcision got established in American hospitals.  I heard that these days its down to 50% so thats progress I guess.

I always wondered how and why circumcision got established in American hospitals.  I heard that these days its down to 50% so thats progress I guess.

I think it's only down to 70%, and I'd also bet most of the decrease is due to an increase in the non-Caucasian population and/or inter-marriage with same.  My best friend who married a Mexican guy didn't get her child circumcised, though I was also insistent that she not do it.  Once something like this is customary it's hard to change, simple things like the father not wanting his son looked at as an oddity in the middle school locker room.  Silly I know, but it is what it is.

By the way, even in some sub-Saharan places this is a more common practice than you think.  My ex-partner, born and raised in Lagos, was circumcised.  I think fully one-third of the world population does this currently, and it's been done for a long time.  Both Egyptians and even the Aztecs, Maya and Incas did it.  Keeping the foreskin clean while in the field for armies is (was) difficult, which is why it was done over so many wildly different older cultures.

They have some suggestions on that website as to what a young boy could say if he got teased in the locker room. The one I remember best was... "You had an important part of your dick cut off and you're laughing at me???" or something to that effect.

Keeping your foreskin clean in the field is no more difficult than keeping your hands, face or asshole clean. Stupid argument. Like most the arguments in favour of circumcision male genital mutilation.

Ann,

Thanks for the new link, I will keep it in a file for later use.
I have sent the video of a baby being circumcised and all the information to a pregnant friend, but she still mutilated the boy so he would match his mutilated father. With that reasoning, I am glad the father didn't have a missing arm!

Before I restored, my glans was as calloused as the heel of my foot and I felt nothing.
Since this is all I had ever known, I thought all was fine. After 4 weeks of keeping skin over the glans, it became soft and shiny. Also with more skin grown there are more nerves grown. My sensitive pink area under the glans has doubled in size and nerves.
When I started I was a bottom as that is the only place I felt anything, but now I prefer to top.
Maybe we could use that as a slogan, "Circumcision makes bottoms!"
Also with the added skin my penis became longer and fatter.
Anyone with a cut dick needs to try restoring for a month to see if they feel a difference.

Simmer down -- I barely think you have any clue what battlefield conditions were like on the Yucatan peninsula in 1500 BC.

Can't be that difficult to imagine. If they had a hard time keeping their foreskin clean (which is easy as all hell), then why didn't they also cut their noses or fingers off, because if the former is allegedly hard to clean, so would the be the latter. It ain't exactly rocket science.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

Just related what I read in a scholarly book on Azetcs and Maya -- if you want to debate the fact then I don't know what to say.  It's what happened.

I'm not saying it didn't happen, I just think it's a silly reason to do it. IMHO.

Besides, there's a huge difference to circumcising an adolescent boy (as some cultures do as a rite of passage to manhood) or circumcising an adult man when he becomes a warrior and circumcising a baby.

By adolescence, the foreskin is fully separated from the glans and can be moved back and forth. In an infant and young baby, the foreskin is not retractable because it is still fused to the glans. This can be true when a boy is as old as seven or eight.

It's there for a reason, so why take it away?

If you were an Aztec leader and during battle you had foreskin infections on the field hitting 50% of your warriors what would you do?

Hoover.

Well, silly, without sex, there'd be no babies to talk about!

Docking is so cool and I'm so jealous. We can sorta do it with my little hood and his big one, but it just ain't the same at all.

I have a friend who willingly underwent circumcision at age 25 to make his girlfriend happy!  He said the difference before and after wasn't as much as you would think, but that it was definitely painful to recover from, and masturbation wasn't as enjoyable.

Then the girl dumped him a few months later.... OUCH.
