Condom Broke
« on: September 30, 2006, 05:24:53 pm »
I had sex, vaginal, with a prostitute 7 days ago.  The condom broke, we noticed right away and put on a new one.  However, I couldn't go on due to my concerns.  After words I washed off like there was no tomorrow.

Earlier that day I had shaved part of my pubic area and my inner thighs had become irratated.

The next day my thighs were red and itchy (it looked like razor burn).  The redness cleared up in two days.

5 days after the sexual encounter I have come down with a fever, headache, tiredness.

Anyway, I am so scared that I may have contracted hiv and my sickness is acute hiv syndrome.

How soon can the initial symptoms of an hiv infection show up?  Could the razor burn that I had increased the chance of infection? How likely is it that infection would have occurred?

I went to a Dr. friend of mine and he ran a series of blood tests (including an hiv rna? test) and told me we'll have to run a differnt test in 3 and 6 months.

Still iam freaking out and can hardly eat, sleep, or relax.

titan,

It's rare for a man to become infected during protected vaginal intercourse where a condom break was noticed right away. Hiv is a fragile, difficult to transmit from a woman to a man anyway. The shaving details you provided are irrelevant as you will not become infected in this way. The only thing that matters is that the head of your penis was exposed to the inside of her vagina. Successful hiv transmission occurs INSIDE the human body, not outside.

Symptoms or even the lack of symptoms mean nothing when it comes to hiv infection. ARS, if it is at all noticeable, normally takes approximately two weeks to show up. Your symptoms are likely unrelated as they happened too quickly.

The vast majority of people who have actually been infected will seroconvert and test positive by six weeks, so a test at that time would be a good indication of your hiv status, but MUST be confirmed at three months. There is NO NEED for six month testing. Three months is conclusive.

You have every chance of continuing to test negative.

While you're here, please read through the  Welcome Thread and follow the Transmission and Testing Lessons links for further information. Please also read through the condom and lube links in my signature line. A correctly used condom rarely breaks.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts
