Boston trip
« on: November 09, 2006, 05:43:48 pm »
Hi Everyone

I'll be thinking of our great big Forum family this weekend as I make another trip back to Boston from my home near Melbourne, Australia to participate in Bruce Walker's 'elite controller'  study at Harvard.

Though I have been very blessed these past 25 years and have not ( thus far) become ill or needed meds, I do not take these blessings for granted. As I wing my way back to the USA and while I undergo apherisis and donate a ton of white blood cells, I carry the words and hopes and aspirations of many with me. I hope and pray that this study in some way may be able to help find a key to unlock the mystery of HIV and thus help the cause of developing a vaccine or cure.

There are several other members here at the forums who participate in this study. For those of you who don't know about this study, here is the link.

http://www.mgh.harvard.edu/aids/hiv_elite_controllers.asp

I'll post again as I find out any information that I'm able to share once I return from Boston. Thanks for your continued support.

With best regards for the 'family'

Paul

Thank you Paul, for your long travel and getting stuck to help others.  If you haven't been, don't miss the Aquarium and the Isabella Stewart Gardiner Museum.

Thanks for your good wishes everyone !!!

I arrived last night at 11pm. It was a good and eventful journey to Boston. Although it was a long trip I only had four plane changes which all went like clockwork, no glitches, no drama.

Monday morning I have my physical and blood screening then I'm off across the river to meet with  Dr.Bruce Walker.
Tuesday at noon I make my blood donation. It takes about 2 hours. the procedure is called leukapherisis My blood is taken  then spun. I get back my red blood cells, they keep all the white cells. about 2 billion of them. These are then given to researchers who do their analysis and store some for further future study. I plan to eat really well (even better than usual) to give them the best cells I can !!

I'll start a new thread with the info I find out and that I'm allowed to share.

Best wishes.

Paul

Speaking of eating well, Paul, if you aren't already familiar with them, you might try the great ham sandwiches at Durgin Park Inn down in Feniel Square (spelling?) and the seafood at Jimmy's is pretty great too.

Cheers,
