smoking and CD4 count
« on: July 05, 2009, 12:25:23 am »
I started treatment 4 yrs back with 225 cd4 and vl of 110000. It increased to 560 after 3 months.then in range of 700 plus. But I was smoking off n on .About 2 yrs back, I got viral fever and  for 1 month , I stopped smoking and cd4 after that jumped to 850.Again I was smoking and cd4 dropped to around 770 and 750 in next 2 tests. However last june I had stopped smoking completely and after 6 months, the cd4 jumped to 900. Now in my latest test i.e after quitting smoking , I have reached a level of 5 short of 1000 i.e 995 with vl being undetectable. Now I can say with great confidence that  a   little change in lifestyle impacts cd4 more positively than multivitamins, but its my own experience. I just thought in each test , I am creating new milestones of cd4 though I do have side effects of liver enzymes.

Erm ...

Giving up smoking is going to improve your overall health and make you less likely to develop PCP and other AIDS defining conditions. That is beyond dispute - but, despite numerous studies, there isn't a single scrap of evidence that giving up smoking will increase your CD4 count if you are HIV-positive.

In fact, the only real study evidence on the impact on CD4 count suggests that giving up smoking can actually cause a small temporary decrease in your CD4 count; but that the advantages gained to your overall health still far outweigh the temporary negative impact on CD4 count (which is only one marker of health).

Hello Angel,

What we do know is this, smoking is a filthy, stinking, expensive,  and unfortunately a very difficult habit to break. I am a non-smoker. I used to smoke two packs a day. That was 20 years ago. Prior to quitting smoking, I smoked for about 19 years. Personally, I can't stand being around smokers. The smell nauseates me.

With the higher than normal risk  for lung cancer in those of us that are HIV positive, why add additional health concerns to our problems. Like,..Emphezema, COPD...

Try to give them up completely. Once you do, you can look back and realize, just how bad of a habit cigarette smoking is. You'll do yourself some good !!

Three years ago my cd4s averaged ~500.  For the past two years they've averaged above ~1100, with the highest count once being 1425.  I've smoked the entire time, though only 1/2 pack/day generally so not heavy.  Correlation does not imply causation.  However, my cd4s have more than doubled due to going on the latest approved HIV medications such as Isentress, Fuzeon and Prezista during that time period.

Now that I've made this point, it is obviously beneficial to not smoke cigarettes but for many other reasons than increasing/decreasing cd4 counts.  I have a prescription of Chantix that has been sitting in my medical treasure chest now for months and I'm thinking I may begin this regimen the first week of August.  Don't hold me to that though.

Oh, I almost forgot -- regular use of poppers increases your cd4 count.  Trust!
