(Not) Ready For His Closeup
« on: December 05, 2012, 08:58:46 pm »
The other day a man here in NYC was pushed onto the tracks in front of a train as it was pulling into the station.  A photographer who was nearby happened to snap a picture of the man scrambling to climb up onto the platform.

Every media outlet imaginable has been in a frenzy about how distasteful it was for the New York Post to run the picture on the front page.  The man's family is outraged, as can be expected.

Do you think the media has gone too far?  Should the photographer have tried to assist the man instead of taking the picture?  How does this make you feel?

Discuss!

After 9/11, during those months of heightened anxiety about anthrax spreading through subway tunnels, I saw one person jump in front of a train, a second either do the same or accidentally fall onto the tracks, and narrowly missed seeing a 3rd but got to see the yellow roped off area freshly scrubbed of brain tissue.

I had to double my klonopin prescription after all of that, and yes I'm being serious.

Is that the actual headline?

It's gross and distasteful, even for the New York Post.

My cousin called me today and told me about this.  I think it's simply disgraceful.  I've always hated that freakin rag and still was kinda shocked that they actually stooped this low. This is yellow press at its worst.

And when the photographer was asked how he had time to snap two or whatever many pictars but no time to assist the victim he said that he was trying to alert the conductor by using his camera's flash.  That is some bullshit if I you ask me.

I would've been mentally fucked for a good while if I had seen anything like that --not once, but almost three times.

I don't want to see that image and I can only imagine how I would feel if I was that man's family. The New York Post is profit from this man's death with no empathy for the victim, his family or other people who witnessed this man's death. It disgusts me. It is the same disgust I feel when the Westboro Baptist Church uses a funeral to publicize their political/religious agenda-- using the tragedy of others for selfish reasons. Some may try to make a freedom of speech argument but I'm not saying this photo can't be shown but it shouldn't. Graphic images of war and conflict are shown because there is a higher purpose-- people need to see what governments are doing. This is just a rag trying to make a buck.

The photographer was on the Today Show this morning.  Below is the interview.  He claims there is no way he could have helped, but others could.  He says he didn't sell his pic, rather "licensed" it.  That is something familiar to the news networks.  They claim they don't pay for interviews, but will license pictures and videos--basically paying for interviews.  ::)

Whenever I've ridden the subway, I always thought how someone could easily trip and fall onto the tracks.  Or, someone could "accidentally" push someone.  Whenever it was crowded, I would not stand next to the edge.

I think there needs to be an emergency stop button at the platform, or gates that are up until the train is stopped and then they lower.  Or, the train could just come in slowly, instead of at full speed.

As a life long viewer of the Today Show, I was confused about the entire broadcast today.  There was a huge segment where they were making fun of sexual harassment.  Matt was even jokingly saying how he did not wear anything different.

I was bothered by the first reporting of this and to have people make a journalistic joke of the situation is not what I was taught.

I know we're getting off topic in Off Topic, but that was odd.  They do this long "investigative report" piece about how one co-anchor slapped Matt on the butt with his scripts.  They even had NBC security footage.  Then, Matt does this acting piece where he acts like a victim of sexual harrassment.  I'm all for a good joke/skit, but it was just odd.  I was embarrassed for them.  People who cover stories like this need to be careful what they make jokes of, because Matt looked like he was making fun of sexual harrassment victims.  I know their ratings are down since Merideth left, and then how bad they treated Ann.

I have a wicked sense of humor but while watching it all, I was debating if it was funny or insensitive.  As a dorky child, Mike Royko was my favorite.  I just hope it doesn't get too blown out of proportion, it was dumb and all is good after Matt realizes he's no Anderson Cooper.
