Official reading: 0.3" snow accumulation at PHL

NOAA Alert #2: severe ice storm advisory extended from 7PM to 9PM and now until midnight.

Dominican residents is 2.36% of the city's population

Which is about the same figure for Philadelphia, and since our city population is about four times that of Miami we have four times the amount of Dominicans.

Thanks for playing though. Do you have that PhD yet?

I got the pleasure of driving home this morning on an entire sheet of ice.  It rained all night and then got below freezing.

Don't look now but there's another snowstorm coming on Tuesday: anywhere from 1-6" but I'm on the southern border and won't get more than an inch. Boston is the target this time.

http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/12/12086.html

Actually, according to U.S. Census:

Philadelphia County population (2010) =  1,547,607
Miami-Dade County population (2010) =  2,591,035

So, according to my humble calculations, we would have almost a million more people than Philadelphia County... Of course, your city is bigger than our city

Philadelphia = 1,547,607
Miami (city) = 413,892

But, your county is only made up of one city... Our county is made up of around 20 cities or more... And, our Dominicans are located throughout the county...

Thanks for trying...

BTW, have you ever watched Raising Victor Vargas? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0316188/

Great movie.

And it's not a Ph.D. - it's an MBA   ;D

Although, if I keep getting my population figures right, I just may go for the Ph.D.

Although, if I keep getting my population figures right, I just may go for the Ph.D.

You originally said "Dominican residents is 2.36% of the city's population" [sic] so why would I consider Dade County? It's not the same, because it's not coterminous in the sense that Philadelphia city and county are -- somewhat unique because of a historical act of consolidation dating to 1854, though only 70 years previous to that what is now Montgomery County had been part of the county of Philadelphia, or a total of 622 sq. miles of land (which would still be a third the size of Miami-Dade County). In other words, if you want to compare Dominicans contained in an area of 1,897.72 sq miles like Miami-Dade then I'd still have to add in practically the entire remaining five counties of southeast Pennsylvania that constitute half of our metropolitan area.

But like I said, Mr. MBA, you clearly stated "city" so I clearly compared city to city. Someone seeking an advanced degree should learn to state their case in a concise manner.

Could you please define coterminous?  ;)

Oh, and I don't have to state it in a concise manner, as I am not going for a grade.... I only worry about conciseness - or would it be consicinicity (lol) and grammar, etc. when I am a) being graded for school or b) working on a grant application for work...  Otherwise, it tis what it tis, and dat is dat.   Luv ya bunches

And, it doesn't really matter who has more Dominicans as long as we each are able to get our fair share - right?   ;D

BTW, Victor Vargas? Seen it?
BTWW, trip to Santo Domingo - where we know there will be plenty of Dominicans?
We could stay at the Hotel Mercure.... right in the historic district.

What an inelegant, ponderous way to admit defeat.

And Miss P only stays at the Hotel Santo Domingo because Oscar de la Renta did the lobby when he decorated Caso de Campo. I hope you're not going to attempt to challenge my knowledge of the Dominican Republic proper now.

The Mercure is located on El Conde which is trashy and full of downscale hustlers. I did all of my procurement at the now closed Penthouse Club. Even the cab drivers baulked at taking me there.

All that's missing is everything being covered in plastic.

I've only seen that done in the South Bronx with leased furniture.

Maybe it's a Midwest thing. I knew a lot of Grandmothers (mine included) that would cover anything stationary with clear plastic. All you could smell was an 'Evening in Paris' perfume and fresh plastic.

How horrible.

My grandmother's home had proper wainscoting, glass french doors with crystal knobs for the dining room, and one of those doors to the kitchen that swung both ways for the help even though she never had a cook or maid. Mind you, my grandfather was a tobacco farmer but he made sure to keep his wife in comfortable surroundings. There was even a huge tapestry hanging in there depicting peasants in the French countryside. I have such memories of that house -- in hindsight I should have retired there and kept it in the family but it's in this town of 400 people so really can anyone imagine me there?

Oh, and you ladies would have lived for her set of pink crystal. Unfortunately my sister-in-law was given all of that. I will only inherit the plain crystal glassware/platter set.

It's kind of like these:

My Grandmother's home had Gin and a lot of it. A French twist, pearls and garish red lipstick. She couldn't remember your name half the time and would argue with plants but she was a hoot. Couple Percocet, a few martins, and you had yourself a real sweetheart by the time school was out.

Goodness no! Gran Gran was a devout Southern Baptist and alcohol was not allowed in the house, except the secret bottle of Applejack for medicinal purposes and to use in some cake during the holidays. Captain Emmett, my grandfather, was required to go down to the stables if he wanted a drink with the farm hands.

And yes, Wumpy -- he was called Captain Emmett. I am named after his older brother, David, and I own his 14k gold antique pocket watch to prove it. I also have a lovely 18k white gold, hand carved ruby ring that was Captain Emmett's and I actually wear it often.

That sounds like my granny too.  Granddad had to sneak down to the cellar to sneak his drinks.  She died a few years back and I found a pint of Jim Beam in the cellar.  Granddad died in the 60's so I thought that would be some great shit.  Aged liquor!!!!!  NOPE, it doesn't age well like a fine wine.  It was nasty.

Granny came from an affluent family but married a commoner.  She was a bit pretentious so she too used plastic on her parlor furniture.  She was also quick to correct anyone who referred to her couch.  It was either a davenport or a settee depending on the room.

She had a beautiful parlor that no one, including adults were allowed to enter.  I guess whoever dies with the most pristine parlor gets an advancement in Heaven?   I would sometimes sneak the pocket doors open to view it.  It was a yellow crush velvet sort of material.  Cherry tables and marble tops and doilies galore.

Her formal dining room was almost as bad.  Since it was almost forbidden, my mother inherited a beautiful cherry set that still looked show room new.

I still have mine from her. There was 'good' and there was for 'company'. Lord....I miss that gin-soaked woman!!! If she were born today she'd have been a drag queen!

OK, speaking of fierce houses mine is on the market right now with a price reduction to $1.35 million. 7 bedroom, 6 baths, 7,672 sq. ft with $25,000 annual property taxes. What's not to like? Plus I can send my children to the progressive Crefeld School close by which produced the likes of M.K. Asante.

And it is all about the exteriors and outdoor landscaping, plus knowing this area (which is actually within city limits and just a few blocks walk to a commuter line into downtown) it backs directly on the secluded Wissahickon Valley Park -- google image that and you will see how fabulous it is.

Oh, and we estate sold practically everything from my grandmother's house a decade ago. I could have had whatever I wanted if I'd owned a house, but alas my space is limited hence the sale. And my sister-in-law only likes new-new-new. I don't believe their house contains a single piece of antique furniture. Oh, except she did take the tapestry form the dining room that's all.

However, I did get what was called my Grandfather's chair -- it's a recliner of sorts, but not the post-70's recliners people have. This one is from the 1920's or so, and it's just the back portion that pivets and there's a bronze rod in the back that has three manual settings. After he died it was never used so it's in fine condition considering the age, though my mother had it reupholstered for me.

Then a few years ago my mother let me have "on permanent loan" the dresser that was stipulated to be always passed down to the oldest female in the family. It was passed down to my grandmother in that manner so it has to be at least 150 years old. I'm supposed to will it to my oldest niece but since I don't have a will made out I better attend to that.

That's right folks, Miss P has absolutely no legal documents prepared for her death even though I've been under general anesthesia five times in the past two years. Go ahead and read me.

I just read that a really massive storm will hit the west coasts of Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England the day before Christmas through Christmas Day with millibar readings as low as a Category 4 hurricane.

Yikes!^

I saw a local news/weather clip last night talking about the snow we are getting today.

These were his exact words:

"The impact, the inches, and how long it lasts".

Just thought to share that with you all. :)

We only got a dusting to 0.5" and it was done when I woke up. But now they're saying we could see an additional "late burst" from 7PM - 11PM and NOAA still says 1-2" possible by the end of the day.

Well, we've gotten about 8" since last week, with another 1-2" expected tonight.

Going to 75 degrees In the next couple of days!

I love this time of year...the yanks are crying about the cold and I'm sippin' iced tea in my shorts on the porch. 8)

Not me - I'm sitting in my kitchen with the door open eating bread puddin I picked up at "Back in the Day Bakery"

I'm looking at the house Miss P wants and it backs up against the park - she'll be invaded by  (ahem) raccoons.

We only got up to 79 today and the temperature has already fallen to 75 degrees. It is supposed to drop to 61 this evening. I am hoping that I will be able to make it through the evening without shivering too much.

Almost the same here Betty. Looks like we might get a break from the snow after today for awhile.

Geez, you're good. Bought that about 10 years ago. Even I forgot where it came from until now.

The local weather man just stated on the evening news that we have had a total of 23.3" of snow so far this year, compared to 1.9" at this time last year.

Wow Betty! You got hit early and often. Grand total here, measured by me (via my eye and my memory :-\) has been about 10".

23" must be an unusual amount of snow at this point even for you. No?

I have read she shovels . I remember having to do that in Richmond and it was a tough job if the snow was heavy or wet, hated it .

Just read November was hottest November on record worldwide, since first records kept in 1800-something.  As climate scientists say-- the world getting hotter doesn't mean you won't have weather where you freeze your ass off with tons of snow.

I used to shovel.  There's a new tenant in the back apartment that has been doing it.  Apparently my landlord pays him to shovel this property, and the landlord's other properties in the immediate area.  However, I did shovel over the weekend to give the guy a break.  But, nothing major.

And yes Mitch, it is unusual to get this much snow so early.  Last week we also had a day where the windchill was -5F.  That was very unusual.  We usually don't get this kind of weather until January.

Now there's going to be a record warm spell in the Mid-Atlantic that may cause flooding. It begins tomorrow and by Sunday it's projected to be 73F where I will be outside of DC, though only 66F in Philadelphia (and Shit Antonio will only be 64F).

Maybe this will end up being a "fake" winter and suddenly January and February will produce hardly any snow. It's been known to happen.

Hey Betty

my landlord pays me to shovel this property, and the landlord's other properties down the street

he also reimbured me for all of the rock-salt I had to buy, I already had a big snow shovel when

I use to live next-door  ;)

The queen in the apartment below me used to shovel here, but he moved out two years ago (thank goodness because he was a nasty cocksucker that allowed his manhunt conquests to roam the hallways after hours and yes I complained to the landlord). I'm sure he must have gotten a rent reduction for doing all of that. He also used to tend to the small planted area in the front of the building.

My landlord doesn't do shit, and all of the post-hipster young professionals are over him hence why the units flip constantly. But they fill back up immediately so why should my landlord, who lives 40 miles away in a wealthy suburb, give a shit?

Next time he wants to raise my rent, which fortunately he only attempts every 3-4 years, I'll negotiate with him with my logbook of shoveling, and then offer to do some minor upkeep things in the common areas. Right now our lobby is covered in promotional flyers from cheap take-out restaurants. You'd think the hipsters in Apartment #1 would bend down, pick them up, and put them in the trash -- but no, they would NEVER do that. They all grew up in the burbs and are used to Mommie and Daddy doing everything.

My Landlords wife is the nice one,

she never forget or loses my rent check, and always pays me, she even paid me with fresh canned pickles, beets ,tomatoes, and cucumbers form her garden,

oh did i mention that they live in prestigious  Santa FE, NM

I saw the house they live in, it looks like a small castle, my landlord is VERY CHEAP sometimes, and forgets to pay me most of the time

and he always looses my rent check  :-\

back on topic........it hasn't snowed much after last week and most of it is gone

he called me and wanted me to keep the snow off the walk ways for the rest of the winter, says he'll pay after winter.........yeah right  ::)
