Switching from Truvada
« on: October 28, 2019, 05:05:46 pm »
Hi guys,

Has anyone ever switched from Truvada to generic tenofovir disoproxil/emtricitabine? I went for the routine check up and collect the pills. I was informed that NHS decided to switch from Truvada to generic version.
I am concerned as I am leaving the UK for 6 months. I will be taking medicines with me and do hope there will not be any side effects of it. I have used Truvada since February last year and I have not had any side effects.
Thanks

Hiya,

It's not really as a switch as true generic medication has the exact same active ingredients and effectiveness (effects) as the branded product. So it's the same just under a different name and often at a fraction of the cost, in this case, a cost reduction for the NHS.

Take it you are still on Truvada + Isentress combo?
Glad to hear it's working for you.

Somewhere nice I hope? Is this the move to teach abroad you had been mentioned before?

Best, Jim

Thanks for the reply.
Yes, my combo is Isentress and Truvada.

Lower cost is good. But just wondering how UK tackle trademark issue?
I mean wouldn’t the original company “make noise” on this?

CD4 - 4 (3/11/15) / VL - 225,000

News mostly talk about PrEP as an example but in short, they lost the patent extension on Truvada

https://www.fiercepharma.com/pharma/u-k-court-invalidates-gilead-s-truvada-patent-extension-allowing-prep-generics

The U.K.’s High Court overturned a patent extension for Truvada, meaning “that unbranded versions of the drug can be legally prescribed,” National AIDS Trust chief executive Deborah Gold said in a statement.

Hi
I am on my second month of the switch with no side effects or issues so far so good.
Is this switch world wide from Truvada?

The switch from branded to generic versions of the same drug? I know the UK is doing this to combat the costs as are many nations like Ireland with a wide range of drugs not just HIV related meds.
