Switching from Truvada

Hi guys,

Has anyone ever switched from Truvada to generic tenofovir disoproxil/emtricitabine? I went for the routine check up and collect the pills. I was informed that NHS decided to switch from Truvada to generic version.
I am concerned as I am leaving the UK for 6 months. I will be taking medicines with me and do hope there will not be any side effects of it. I have used Truvada since February last year and I have not had any side effects.

Hiya,

It's not really as a switch as true generic medication has the exact same active ingredients and effectiveness (effects) as the branded product. So it's the same just under a different name and often at a fraction of the cost, in this case, a cost reduction for the NHS.

Take it you are still on Truvada + Isentress combo?

Yes, my combo is Isentress and Truvada.
I am leaving for Asia /visiting a few countries there/and then work in Taiwan.

Lower cost is good. But just wondering how UK tackle trademark issue?
I mean wouldn’t the original company “make noise” on this?

News mostly talk about PrEP as an example but in short, they lost the patent extension on Truvada

The switch from branded to generic versions of the same drug? I know the UK is doing this to combat the costs as are many nations like Ireland with a wide range of drugs not just HIV related meds.
