Title: The Oscars: 2012
Post by: Solo_LTSurvivor on February 26, 2012, 04:45:49 pm
Who's watching?

Predictions?

Do you care?

(I started this for mecch, as I'm shocked he didn't start a thread - with him being the diva of all things popular culture  :o)

But... Billy Crystal? snore, And who cares about these movies this year........?  double snore.

I'll watch for dresses of course.  Somewhere read that stars want to wear Victoria Beckham??

We all love Oscar delusion and shameless Hollywood rat fucks.

The dead stars montage is always moving.

This AP live stream does away with the E annoying ads.

Haven't figured out what European channel will actually broadcast this.  It was easy to find when I had satellite tv.

Like, so totally true.  Yawn!

And who cares about these movies this year........?  double snore.

Hawney!  I am surprised that you said this.  Usually you are Miss pop culture indeed.  Several of the nominees are quite good (I actually saw all nine of them and all of the nominees for best foreign film).   Here's how I rank them:

1. The Artist - 9.2 (even though some fool slept through half of the fim and was snoring loud as muhfucka)
2. The Help - 9.2
3. Hugo - 9.0
4. Midnight In Paris - 8.5
5. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close - 8.0
6. The Descendants - 7.5
7. The Tree of Life - 7.5
8. Moneyball - 6.5
9. War Horse - 5.0

The foreign films:

1. A Separation (Iran) - 9.0
2. In Darkness (Poland) - 8.5
3. Footnote (Israel) - 7.5
4. Monsieur Lazhar (Canada) - 7.5
5. Bullhead (Belgium) - 2.5 (Awful, just awful.  I want my money back kinda movie).

My predictions (and preferences) as far as acting is concerned: Viola Davis from The Help (Best Actress), Jean Dujardin from The Artist (Best Actor), Octavia Spencer from The Help (Best Supporting Actress), and Christopher Plummer from Beginners (Best Supporting Actor).

I'm so behind the times.  I just saw No Country For Old Men for the first time last night.

btw, a 20 minute drive takes 30 minutes each way which is what I spend going to the movies on the subway even though the theater is 3 miles away (walking to stations, waiting on platform, transferring from one line to the other, transiting 8 stations)

I watched ROCKY last night again, two nights in a row.  Best picture 1976 and it is gorgeous. Perfect cinematography, set design, amazing performances and script.
Do you think one of these pictures tonight is pure hollywood magic like Rocky? And it was done on a shoestring....  Launched a star.  etc etc.

1. I don't like Rocky, at all.  I find it hard to believe that it was the best movie of 1970something.

2. Yes, The Artist is "pure Hollywood magic."  And I expect to see more of Bérénice Bejo and Dujardin in the future.

3. Stallone may have been a star, but I find him rather... I dunno.  He was just a lucky bad actor who never made any good movies IMO.

But what do I know, I'm just a pathetic queen

Last Best Pictures which are more or less great movies:
2003 Lord of the Rings (possibly)
1994 Forrest Gump (possibly)
1991 Silence of the Lambs
1988 Rain Man
1987 Last Emperor
1978 Deer Hunter
1977 Annie Hall
1976 Rocky
1975 One Flew Over
1974 Godfather Part II
1972 Godfather
1971 French Connection
1969 Midnight Cowboy
1965 Sound of Music
etc etc

Notice anything? 70's rocked.

Not great movies.
I don't think bad movies often win the Oscars.  But a lot of very professional films without so much magic do.

Yeah - I would be pissed if I were Ryan -
Sacha is tired, old news -
His shock humor was funny the first go round - with Borat (?), but after that, shock humor that is done routinely is not shock at all.

Lotta good that will do you in Richmond -- by next year I hear they'll be forcing anal probes on gay men in that state to inspect for lost jazz hands and pixie dust ;)

btw, Wumpalicious and I are (finally) having our engagement party this fall (Volusia Pride (https://www.facebook.com/volusiapride2012)!) at the fabulous Penthouse Pavilion of the Streamline Hotel in Daytona (http://daytonabeachbearsfl.tripod.com/id12.html). It's a known fact that this now gay establishment was the true birthplace of NASCAR. (http://sports.yahoo.com/nascar/news?slug=dw-wetzel-streamline-hotel-daytona-500-022512) We'll be having a lovely buffet line of fried chicken and waffles, sticky sweet baby back ribs, candied yams, french fries and trays of lemon bars.

I thought that the bottom gets the ring -- does this mean I get to fist you for the next 20 years? That must be some sloppy, Burger King infused hole you got back there. I'll have to remember to steal a crate of latex gloves in the supply room of my HIV clinic next month.

Everyone satisfied with the results?

And Angelina Jolie's posing?
http://uk.eonline.com/news/fashion

Yes, it was just mere moments into the wake of Jolie's leggy Academy Award appearance, in which she struck an ever so slightly preposterous stance while handing out the Best Adapted Screenplay honors, that the inspired Twitter feed—which now boasts 12,000 followers and counting—was launched.

I think that dress and pose should become a meme.

Absolutely, if your seeking the style of the dead, "meme" it should be! Clearly the gal needs to get some sun, and a new job since her directorial debut was overwhelming in Bosnia. Ugly and her man didn't look much better.
