I thought 2006 was bad....
« on: March 04, 2007, 08:32:03 pm »
You know I thought 2006 was a rough year but 2007 is one for the record books…At this moment my partner is in the hospital with PCP.  He was coughing and short of breath for over a week with fever but was refusing to go to the doctor no matter what I tried to tell him.  He is only a week into Atripla and has developed a rash over his entire body.  Of course he is depressed and disheartened.  Now the ID doc says she is going to switch him to Kaletra b/c of rash and depression which may be a good thing but he feels like a failure for having to switch meds (I know that is the depression talking.).  Still, I don’t know how to help him.  I am trying to take care of myself also and my 8 year old so I can’t even be at the hospital as much I would like.  AAAARRGHH….if it isn’t one thing it is another.

Pardon me while I ramble a bit and provide a little context…Last week Wednesday (2/28) someone broke into his account somehow and made cash withdrawals from San Antonio, TX totaling $500.  The bank is investigating but I doubt he’ll get his money back.  And he isn’t rich (and neither am I!). On Thursday he was so short of breath he couldn’t go to work.  I wanted to take him to the hospital but he refused to go.  Friday he had an appointment with our ID doc and she said he was fin, probably the flu, sent him for a chest x-ray with a prescription for Zithromycin just in case the x-ray showed something.  The clinic was closing at noon and we reached radiology at 11:30.  When they took his x-ray, the technician told us not to leave and I knew it was bad.  But they couldn’t find the ID doc so they sent us home. (Yes, they sent us home.)  Later on we got a call to go to the ER the next morning b/c he had pneumonia. (Duh!) We don’t live together so I had to take care of my son but later that evening his fever spiked and I rushed over to get him and he was admitted.  Now I am running between the hospital, taking care of my son, trying to do my job (which is suffering), and maintain my T-cells.  I am being pulled in so many directions….and I am pissed that the doc couldn’t see he had PCP when I knew he had and that the hospital let us go when clearly his x-ray showed pneumonia!  His ID doc is my ID doc and I am concerned about this choice in judgment.  She stated that since his T-cells were at 250 n one thought about PCP but from what I have read his smoking and the fact he had thrush should have led them to err on the side of caution and prescribe Bactrim as a prophylactic.  Can’t wait to see what the rest of March will bring!  Anyway…thanks for letting me vent.

Hi Lisa,

When so much is going down all at once it's awfully hard to keep any sense of balance in the situation.

So let me just strongly second Ann's recommendation that you first take care of yourself in whatever way that makes sense to you. By doing that you will be in the best position to do anything for anyone else when you need to. But your health and your spirit are the top of the list.

With proper care in hospital your partner will come through this ok. So one step at a time and your own care is that first step.

Wishing you and your partner well,
Andy Velez

I'm sure that post helped you vent all of this. Do take care of yourself, as your partners getting his help at the hospital.  You can only do what you can do.  I hope he gets better soon.

Lisa, first of all take care of yourself or you won´t be able to look after your son and your partner, and they need you.
His cd4 count is not bad (he is above 200). He will be better soon. Let the meds and antibotics do their work. Things will get better very soon.
Good Luck!  :-* :-* :-*

Hello, sorry that things are not going well. take care of you and then you will be able to take care of your child and partner. It's hard enough to take care of things when they are going well much less going bad but keep trying. I hope everything gets better for you.. Cristy
