Epididymitis

I was diagnosed with a viral throat infection from both my doctor and an ER doctor because I had a fever along with it. I was tested for mononucleosis at the ER and it was negative. I returned to my physician and he mentioned that it was a viral infection along with my sinus and allegory problems. I have never had a viral sore throat that has lasted two weeks and in the interim developed a fever. My doctor order a blood test for all STD and HIV (i recommended it as well) and a culture on my throat.  My dilemma is that I went down on girl for no more than 5 minutes (in a car, oral sex) as she did on me on November 8. I statred developing my sore throat on Nov 20. Please help and advise what my chances are for contracting HIV. I will get my results tomorrow evening and I am so scared.

IrishMex I'm no expert on this subject and I'm sure one of the resident experts will answer your concerns.
From my understanding Your risk from Oral sex is almost zero, so I would'nt worry. If you caught anything it could be Gonorrhoea as this can cause a sore throat, however there are countless other bugs much more easily caught than HIV that would cause a sore throat, so you can't base anything on a sore throat.
If you are worrying about this, the minimum period to test for HIV is 6 weeks.  Your exposure was only about 4 and a bit weeks so the test that you did would be a bit early. A test at 12 weeks gives a conclusive result.
Us guys are all dogs so don't be hard on yourself.

I just never heard or had a viral throat infection that lasted for two weeks with a fever for a few days.. I was last tested in July 06 but I am just so worried. I have a girlfriend and do not want to pass her with anything.Thanks dublin and from one dog to another I hope your right minus the Gonorrhoea

It is quite possible that you have gonorrhea in your throat. You'll have to have it swabbed. However, a virus can last a while, especially if you're stressed out. Stress is bad for your immune system.

Whatever is going on, it has nothing to do with hiv infection. Neither going down on a woman nor getting a blowjob are risks for hiv infection.

I am a 44 male and had unprotected sex one time and 6 weeks later found out I had epididymitis. I had urine culture along with other bloood tests yesterday and today the urine culture reveals no growth after 24 hours. What are my chances of a growth found and is Epididymitis a gateway to HIV. The P.A. at the ER indicated a culture will reveal whether I have a STD.

Epididymitis can be caused by chlamydia, e.coli and gonorrhea in sexually active men. It is not caused by hiv and has nothing to do with hiv. Only pre-existing STIs can increase your risk of hiv infection. It does not sound as though you had epididymitis before the unprotected intercourse, therefore it will have no bearing on your risk level.

A urine culture may reveal some, but not all, STIs. It will NOT reveal hiv infection. Only hiv antibody testing will. And yes, you do need to test for hiv as you have been at risk because of the unprotected intercourse, not because of the epididymitis.

A test now will give a very good indication as to your status, as the vast majority of people who have actually been infected will seroconvert and test positive by this time. A six week negative must be confirmed at the three month point, but is highly unlikely to change.

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex without a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through all three condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!
