Now what! I have a lump in my neck
« on: March 15, 2011, 03:18:42 pm »
First my Kidneys are on the lam, now this.

Let me preface this with the fact I am seeing my ID doc in 2 weeks.

I noticed last night I have a lump, about the size of a grape, on the right side of where my thyroid is. I cant tell If it's attached to the thyroid or not. I've also been having a sensation of not being able to swallow for about a month, sometimes it feels like someone is strangling me. But not severe enough to where I cant breathe or eat. I also have had intermittent fevers for the past month or so. Mind you none of this rose to the severity of going to the ER.

I've done some self internet diagnosing (yes I know), and a Goiter seems to be the most probable condition, although I guess Cancer is a possibility as well (which is terrifying as my mom is currently undergoing horrid chemo).

Have any you had a Goiter before? or similiar symptoms? If so what was the outcome?  I really dont think this is an emergency situation, Am I Ok in waiting 2 weeks to see my ID doc (who will prob only refer me to an ENT)?

WTF Willy !  Dont wait two weeks if it gets any larger.  The disturbing part of your post to me is ' sometimes it feels like someone is strangling me, AND not being able to swallow for about a month'.  That would be enough to cause concern.

At least put a call into the Dr this afternoon to see if they think an expedited visit may be in order.

get to a doctor pronto. ;)
"intermittent fevers" for a month's time is a serious concern that should not be taken lightly

Willy, I'm gonna chime in on this one. Not being able to swallow? That's an emergency room trip if you can't get into see your doc. Don't mess with this  ;)
Diagnosed in  May of 2010 with teh AIDS.

PCP Pneumonia . CD4 8 . VL 500,000

TRIUMEQ - VALTREX -  FLUOXETINE - FENOFIBRATE - PRAVASTATIN - CIALIS

It's not that I cant swallow, its more of a sensation of "difficulty swallowing.". Maybe a better description is it feels like the base of my tongue is swollen.

Ok, so the concensus is that I get to a doc post haste, I will do so ;)

My ID doc is my PCP, and I already know I prob cant get in any earlier, however I will call them in the morning. I think I would need a referal to see a ENT, but I'll check around and see if I can get in to one of them in the next few days.

Much obliged for the input

When you posted about your tiny testicles awhile back, I prayed that you'd get a big bulge again.

This wasn't what I had in mind.  I should have been more specific.  I'm sorry.

I agree with everyone and urge you to see your doctor especially since you have stated a slight feeling of interference with swallowing.

The doctor may order a fine needle aspiration (to collect a biopsy) to rule out some potential causes.  It may simply be an infection that causes swelling and/or inflammation that can be treated.

In any event, have it checked out by your doctor right away.

Take care.

You are a smoker, right?  Even very young folks like yourself can get oral and throat cancers.  I worry about my smoking for 16 years.  I believe Michael Douglas said he first had fevers, swelling sensation, and then hoarseness.  It is probably nothing, but given that you're a smoker and poz, you should have it seen about yesterday.  And, wasn't info just posted here about how HPV can cause oral and throat cancers??  Okay, I know.  I'm being overly dramatic..lol.

I recently read a Q&A to an online doc about reasons for his low sodium.  Most would have just dismissed it thinking that he just needed to drink some Gatorade and get hydrated.  However, he posted an update with news he actually had lung cancer.  Evidently, cancers can cause sodium levels to drop.  It was a good reminder to not just dismiss things.  But, don't overreact either.

Best of luck that it is nothing to be concerned about.  We will be expecting an update.

I'm sorry to hear about your lump, Wumpster.  I agree with everyone else here:  it's better to be proactive.  Make the calls, find the right doctor, schedule the appointment.

Willy, I hope this is just a plugged salivary gland.

I have never actually had a goiter, but I do have a Crix neck that makes it look like I do, does that count?

Be well, sweetie

Willy, I hope this is just a plugged salivary gland.

Actually Mark, plugged glands was one of the things she said was possible. Along with a fungal or bacterial infection of the throat, or infected lymph nodes among others.

She found (via palpation) 2 lumps in my neck just to the right of my throat. She did 3 throat swabs, and ordered 3 Thryroid tests (TSH w/Reflex Free T4, Triiodothyronine T3 Free, and Thyroid Stimulating Hormone).

Of course I immediately broached the "Cancer subject", but she said it could be 50 other things before it was Cancer and stated it would do us no good in discussing cancer at this point. I see her again in 10 days, if all the tests come back normal then she will refer me to an ENT for a scoping. Of course I'm hoping for a simple plugged gland or hell for that matter I'd even be happy with a bacterial infection. Anything but the big C.

Can you help me out with something hiv related.
sure thing Dave! ;D
however it's best not to clutter up someone else's thread with another topic (ie hijack this thread in other words). You could go to the correct forum ("living with HIV" maybe) and post a new thread about your issue. I assure you, I'll come answer and I know a lot of other people will be willing to chat with you about whatever your issue is.

or you could post a new thread (introducing yourself to the group) - because it takes 3 postings before you and PersonalMessage (PM) another member. So if you don't want to talk with me in a new thread (in public), then say hi to the crowd a few time until you can PM (in private) me.

hope that all makes sense and hope me and/or others can help you out. ;)
