Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

Oral Sex, Canker Sore, Swollen Taste Bud, What's the Risk?

Hi all!

I have asked this question on other forums and have gotten some comforting responses, however, I am the kind of person who needs to hear things 80 times from 80 people before I believe them to be true.

Are canker sores a direct link into the blood stream? Is it super easy to catch HIV from pre-cum with one of these in your mouth? If so, how much does the chance of catching HIV increase from the 1/10000 chance that oral sex usually is? (ie 1/100, 1/1000, 1/3 etc) I always thought that canker sores were superficial, not so much a direct link into the blood stream? (esp if they are not bleeding) Are canker sores a theoretical risk for HIV or a documented risk? (theoretical: it could happen due to common sense or documented: there have been documented cases where real people have experienced transmission in this way) If a small bit of pre-cum got on this sore would transmission be considered high risk (super likely to seroconvert) or very low risk (same as normal oral sex risk, not changing much)

Basically what happened to me: I gave a man oral sex while I had a canker sore & inflamed taste bud in my mouth. I don't know his status (whether he was HIV pos or neg). I asked him if he was clean or not and he said he was clean but I seriously don't believe anyone haha. I did everything I could to keep his penis and his fluids (PRE-CUM only) away from my canker sore and swollen taste bud in my mouth but I can't help but think that a slight bit of fluid could have touched the sore and he might have given me something (HIV mainly, anything curable I'm not worried about b/c I'll just take antibiotics after I get tested). I also tried to mix my saliva with his pre-ejaculate to disable the virus. Then I licked the sore with the tip of my tongue to make sure that nothing got in the wound. Also, he NEVER ejaculated in my mouth.The only thing my mouth ever had contact was his unknown pre-ejaculate.

Sorry for the TMI if there was any, I got kinda pushed into giving this guy oral (it wasn't my idea). I would have so much rather have given him a hand job to be safe, but reality is, I didn't and I have been stressing about this situation for like months.

I'm getting tested on the 21 but the only thing I have been able to turn to is these forums for comfort, so please help! :)

also, as an aside, he never ejaculated at all, so there was no risk of me coming in contact with his semen anywhere.  ;D

Golden, you are worrying needlessly. Your saliva contains over a dozen elements and proteins which very effectively prevent the transmission of viable HIV virus if it is present when you give oral sex.

What you also need to know is that the only confirmed risks for the sexual transmission of HIV are unprotected vaginal and anal intercourse. As long as you always use condoms properly for those activities you will be well protected.

I also need to say that using the term "clean" to describe negative HIV status is very offensive in this forum. People aren't "clean" or "dirty." They either have the HIV virus (positive) or don't have it (negative). Please remember that in the future when you are talking about the issue. Using clean and dirty just perpetuates the stigma associated with the virus although I am sure that was not your intention.

I don't see any need for testing for you this time. Get on with your life.

OK. I understood that the offense was not intentional. But you need to be aware that it is offensive to people living with the virus to use that term to describe it.
