***FURIOUS*** - Ignorant people...
« on: May 24, 2007, 12:26:40 am »
Wow, its rare that I get this pissed off... but on a facebook (facebook.com) group I moderate there is a group called "AIDS / HIV research" someone posted this question/statement...

"Let's say you could murder everyone with aids. Would it be a good idea? Would it result in fewer deaths over 10 years? 20 years? 50 years? 100 years?

What if you could castrate (humanely, i'm not talking butcher knife) a man with Aids, so he could not inefect anyone else. Should you do it?"

Someone later responded by saying... (A high school senior)

"Well, I find it interesting how you can oppose eliminating AIDS at it's source. Removing vectors would be a brilliant solution. Unfortunately, the rest of the world is too wrapped up in human rights to consider the greater good. Millions with AIDS would die. Many millions more would be saved. You people think with your hearts, probably because you don't have brains.
Kill the people, stop the problem. If I had AIDS, I would do what it took to prevent it from spreading. Castration, or if need be, death. It's a necessary evil."

I just cant fathom why people are so ignorant and AHHHHHHHH... anyway I needed to vent.

Tom

on a lighter note, (never end something on a sour note) I got my hair cut, highlighted and brows done today :)

Hate and ignorance on the internet? Next thing you'll be telling me that it's infested with porn, too  :o

What struck me most about this is that they seem to have overlooked transmission through the receptive partner. Most bottoms I've been with might as well be castrated for all the attention they pay to their dicks. Maybe they should advocate colostomy bags and suturing poz holes shut, too.

And what do we do with the ladies?

the high school student went on to later post...

Well, it must be hard. But I honestly, it really has to be contained. Sure, people with AIDS may contribute a lot, but so will people who may end up getting it later. I fail to see how utilitarianism is ignorant. Cruel, heartless. Sure, I wouldn't say I'm not. Nothing personal, but a 'cleansing' may not be such a bad idea. Granted, it doesn't have to murder. There are other ways. Perhaps, quarantine.
Now yes, I am just a kid, but I feel the rights of the whole outweigh the rights of the individual. Always. Even when it sucks.

this was after i said...

try staying in High School a few more years, you have a lot to learn about life. There are many many people out there who are HIV positive who contribute wonderful things in life.

I think people just need to be responsible for their own health, empower themselves to know their status by getting tested and communicate with their partners about their sexual activities. If everyone became responsible during sexual behaviors this epidemic would/could end.

It honestly infuriates me that there are ignorant people in this world... to think that people would want to have another holocaust by killing off people who are infected with HIV - many who have been born with it and had no say is ridiculous.

Their parents should have been castrated (or sterilized, or at least given a lifetime supply of free condoms)

wouldn't it be cool if we could control the spread of hate and aggression this way (I refuse to call this ignorance)? then the world would be a much better place.

I know these kinds of ops that's why I refrain from using other HIV-related forums anymore, it's sickening

I tried that for a while, to be the "pet poz" to the general public via these forums. It gets old very fast. I don't need to justify my existence to anyone, or kiss ass, or appeal to their humanity or whateoever. THEY have to convince ME that they are worthy of my time and energy, if anything. Sorry if it sounds arrogant, I have just been disgasted too many times.

LoL Matty. Gawd you are the best!

I had the privilege to speak to a local gay youth group here in Phoenix last year. The most interesting part of it came when the kids were encouraged to ask questions. "Anything at all, don't be shy" I said.

The questions came, one after the other. Most were predictable, and fairly well meant. However, this one kid, with a catatonic look and long scraggly hair, ashed the most bazaar Question of the night:

Why don't they put everyone on an island somewhere, and just let the HIV die off."

I thought that was crazy at the time. But Tom, your kid takes the cake, BY FAR.

Hang in there buddy. There is one in every crowd. Keep up the good work!

are you out of your mind?! There are millions of people living with aids, your would murder more people than what Hitler and the Nazis ever killed! It would be a Holocaust!
Plus murder is WRONG. A person does not necessarily infect people sexually, there are other ways of catching HIV too, do you even know how HIV is transmitted?!
I encourage you to read more about HIV before making ignorant statements.
Have you heard that people could get HIV through dirty needless, and blood transfussions?

And HIV/AIDS is rampant in impoverished parts of Africa because the people there aren't properly educated on how the disease is caused, or how to prevent it. They aren't catching and spreading it because they are careless, but because they've never had access to the information.
And all over the world, many people who are infected don't even know that they've contracted HIV.

human rights? what happened to my right as an American citizen? You want to quarantine me until I die? WTF... really... if EVERYONE was responsible for their own behaviors and or protecting themselves this epidemic would change. drastically. I have been publicly speaking nationwide on HIV/AIDS for years, its rare that someone pisses me off to the extent you have... GOD I hope and pray that you don't make a mistake and get an STD, hell maybe you've already had unprotected sex but never been tested? I just wonder if you'll be the next that needs to be quarantined.

Perhaps you should point out to them the simple fact that the majority of HIV infections are passed by those who are recently infected themselves, and have no idea of their status.

Well, the lepers used to be sent to Hawaii.  That sounds good to me!

On a serious note, the government does have the ability to quarantine and is only limited by the sheer outrage that would ensue.  Besides, most of us are actually still quite productive despite our illness.

Eventually people learn that their own selfish interest is actually best served by preservation of the rights and lives of others.  Especially, the least among us.

At some points in history, his argument was incorporated into different societies in the form of exposure of infants in ancient Sparta, old folks drifting out to sea in the Arctic, etc.

To an extent, the same decisions are still made given the scarcity (or sheer improper allocation) of resources.  Currently, we value military spending over healthcare.  As a result, the government is literally murdering thousands both with guns and lack of healthcare.

Ignorance is bliss or so they say but in the kid's case, it is dangerous. Who is to say he won't be the next nutcase looking for poz people to shoot. It is possible, he could find out where clinics in his town is and just go postal. But as I like to say, walk a mile in my shoes or any of our shoes and he would be singing a different tune.

I don't think its the parents.  I have otherwise sane nephews who are in that just-graduated-from-high-school-and-in-my-first-years-of-college-and-I-know-it-all-stage.  Of course, you recognize the bad premise to his argument is that the greater good outweighs the basic rights, such as life, of the minority.  But, it would be hard for him to recognize that life isn't all about money.

Sorry guys, but I see this as nothing more than a smart kid trying to test some recently learned sociopolitical theory. The fact that this thread has gotten as long as it has is probably of more concern to me, as it's not worth spending the time engaging his ideas.

Hopefully the next book he reads prompts him to try a different personality for awhile.

I met a positive person who lives in DC. His ID doc told him that if the general population knew how many "household names" are HIV positive, that could conceivably turn the tide of public opinion, affect stigma, increase awareness, prevention, research, etc.

If this high schooler/poster were to understand that the very body to which he would look to mastermind and execute such a quarantine/massacre would not hurt itself, perhaps he would look at the issue from another angle. He is obviously and understandably clueless as to how non-selective the virus is with respect to occupation, class, etc.

This is possibly a young man whose problem-solving mind could be turned around and encouraged to envision another way to stem the epidemic.

I don't think we should be 'quarantined', but sometimes I think the 45 million of us would make a mighty fine new country.  I hear there's some land in the middle east nobody really wants (I'M KIDDING!!!).

Perhaps it's best just to respond in high school speak, "Dooode, you're such a slack jawed nimrod!  I'm HIV+ and 15 years older than you and I swear I'm still going to totally outlive your ass!"

I claim this land in the name of the United Republic of Retroviruses...God bless us all, everyone.
