Back waxing gone bad_UGH!
« on: March 05, 2007, 04:56:22 pm »
OK this is embarrassing. I have a hairy body, so I went to a friend to get a complete body hair clipping.

Then he "Waxed" my back. Well the hot wax felt great...It all went well, I was happy until two days after:

My entire back has broken out with hive-like red spots. There are hundreds of them all over my back. It doesn't itch too bad, and it doesn't hurt.

Does anyone have any ideas on a remedy? I would love to avoid a DR visit, as my insurance is actually worse then BENJ's.

Thanks in advance.

I had this when I had my back sugared once. I went back to waxing after, which works OK for me.

I basically just had to exfoliate my back a lot. It's gone wrong, and the hairs are going to get ingrown unless you stop skin from closing over the top.

Use a decent, lightweight moisturiser afterwards.

Benadryl, or Benadryl cream. I used to get my eye brows waxed, but had to stop for the same reason. I would get red, and have little bumps or hives where waxed.

You must have a great pain threshold, my eyebrows hurt, I can't imagine the whole back.

I was warned of this when I was looking for ways to depilitate my shoulders. Apparently, waxing, though effective, can be a real bitch. Ingrown hairs, folliculitis, even infection and scarring.

I think the important thing would be to exfoliate, keep those hairs growing OUT and not IN. And, as has been suggested, moisturize and take Bendryl for the symptoms.

and wow, your threshold for pain must be pretty great.

I decided to stick with the Norelco, myself :)

ok now this reply is coming from someone who is super duper hairy and has yet to see or meet someone who is as hairy as him!  ;)

The key to avoid the red spots / infection is making sure you don't let sweat stick on your back. If you feel sticky n' sweaty, take a shower asap and gently dry out the water on your back.

I have stopped removing my hairs now. Waxing is painful and I would need industrial-size Nair cream to get rid of all my hairs!

Sorry, didn't see mattys post. Great minds think alike! Also have found that haemorriod cream appied before a wax shrinks the blood vessels so you don't get those nasty ingrowers or pimples.
Get threading done now, much more effective and less probs

Some of the Aloe Vera Gells contain quite a bit of alcohol. Scooter found this out the hard way... Look for pure aloe, or extract it from the plant.
Bikini Bare Finishing creme is Aloe and Collagen..

Gawd I love aidsmed...Look at all of this wonderful new information! I feel like I'm getting more homo lately then bi, but that's a whole other thread for sure LoL...

Christine...I can't lie, it hurt like hell. But I was half way done, I couldn't exactly tell him to stop, though I came really close LoL.
Thirtysomething...Yeah you are right about the sweating....I had my usual night sweats that did me in, I think! Why didn't I think of Nare??? UGH Is there a nare for men? (Growl, woof)

Buck, what is Aveno baths? More info please? I'm all new to this stuff.

Tigger, In my wildest dreams Hemorrhoid cream be fore a waxing? WHAT? LoL...Where did you get that one from?

This will be my last waxing. Like always, I learned the hard way.

By the way....I did this in exchange for...well....he (The WAxer) is publishing a book. Let's just say I had to put on a white pair of boxers and let it all hang out...That was my payment. I'd post a pic but I think I would get thrown out of aidsmed forever. So I'll leave it up to your imaginations! I was #57, and had the longest one to date....I hope that "holds up" HeHe.

This I can certainly chime in on.  Same thing happened to me and I've now had my back waxed at least 8 times (and yes it is painful as HELL, but I like the results).  Get yourself a good, stiff-bristled, long handled back scrub brush and scrub your back every time you shower for a couple of weeks after waxing.  I use either bar soap or even shampoo and I don't have the break-out issues I used to.

Good luck!

In my case I can go longer in between waxings since the hair seems to grow back more slowly and it's finer each time, so it depends on how course and dark the hair is to begin with.  I only wax a couple of times a year, but I'm not adamant about being completely hairless - sparse is fine.

Nothing smoother and softer than a freshly waxed back!

I thin out my arm hair with a beard trimmer.  Maybe it'd work for your back in the future? Not waxing, but you avoid skin damage.

Nonetheless, you get an A for effort.

I actually just have very fine soft hair in odd places on my back (but it's dark hair). A pass with a dry razor does the job nicely ( so far) ;D

Back waxing?  Yikes... sounds painful.   I love my back hair and front hair too.  In the summer it lifts my clothes away from my body keeping me cool and dry.  If I could only get some of it to move to the top of my head I would be thrilled.

Bartro, yeah it is painful but when it averages 115 degrees here in Phoenix, Well let's just say it feels like I'm wearing a built-in sweater. So I was trying to find a way to keep cooler for the summer, plus it really does feel nice. I just trimmed my chest hairs. I'll never wax again, I think I'll go to plan "B" and or "C" LoL.

Keeping your back moisturized will help. I've never had a bad reaction to back waxing, but I don't do it very often.

Sounds like in-grown hairs and folliculitis.  A few folks have mentioned this above,
but Aveeno can probably help you quite a bit -- the bath is particularly effective:

http://www.aveeno.com/detailAction.do?id=3689

I'd be careful about using too much of other products like aloe vera, which may
clog up your follicles even more.  Calamine lotion could help if the itching gets to
be excruciating.  Plain old talcum powder might help between baths.

Hairy backs (and other body parts) are a-ok by me.  Though I can understand
how a change can feel good -- and how it is important to feel cool and comfortable
in hot weather.

Cheers,

Henry

Jeff,

You've been watching Queer Eye for the Straight Guy again, haven't you! LOL

I used to shave a lot and found that in some "sensitive" areas, I would get the condition you describe.

My response was just to keep shaving it all off, bumps and all. I wouldn't recommend it. It worked, but it also stung like crazy.

Now about that photo in the boxers!!!   :o :o :o :o :o

I am both jealous and intrigued.  :-*

I have a confession to make:  I am not as hairy as most bear guys are.  That said, i like some fur on my men and it is a real turn on to see a happy trail.
This guy has come to terms with his  hairy back:

I congratulate him on the humor he has expressed and the display of his hair.  He looks great and I am SURE that he has a bunch of admirers!!!!

Mercy!... some of ya'll are close to being as hairy as gorilla's... lol thank goodness I've never had to worry about hair on the back... but, when men get older I have found trimming hair from ears, nose and shaving twice a day is enough for me... thank God... I'm a true blond... oh to stay cool with all that hair bush growing everywhere try wearing t-shirts under your shirt... a couple of layers works way down south to help keep you cool..... I think everyone gave some good advice on hair maintenance... wish you great success...
