Bizzare needle stick, help please.
« on: December 04, 2009, 06:09:14 pm »
Hello, im 18 years old and im in highschool. We have this very odd girl who gets in trouble alot and one time she got in trouble for showing a syringe around all day. Anyway, i got put into a group with her and she was just staring at me the whole time. I turned my head for a second or two and i felt a prick on my finger. I turned around and there she was with a syringe in her hand. She immediatley got takin to the office and sent home. The prick left a little blood and hole on my thumb and they are saying im at risk of hiv and other stuff because she could have took hers or somebody elses blood and stuck me. what do i do?

HIV is not passed in that manner. The kind of needlestick you had was very different from when someone shares a needle for intravenous drug use.

Nevertheless you ought to report to the proper authority in your school about what happened. I don't see any need for testing. This mostly about your fears and not about a real risk for transmission.

Thank you so much for your response Andy and this is bigger than i made it seem. I just typed it real fast cuz i was in a hurry but yea the police are involved. They told about a case where an hiv positive man spit in a cops face and he got assualt with a deadly weapon. they say i could press serious charges but im not like that. they are running on this stuff by me like "she wouldnt just stick u for no reason she was trying to do something" idk this is all really big and we are trying to keep it quit so rumours dont go around.

Nevertheless whatever else is going on, I don't see this as having in anyway been a risk for HIV. Period.

I would also very much dislike seeing this happening turned into an HIV-phobia circus.

Yea andy i dont like attention so i doubt i will press charges. the only reason i even thought of hiv was because of what they told me at the school.

Scared,

It's an urban myth that people go around infecting others by stabbing them with a needle. Don't let the  scaremongering authorities get to you.

What do I mean by scaremongering authorities? A good example lies in the case you mentioned where someone spat on a cop and got charged with assault with a deadly weapon. Saliva is not infectious, so how is saliva deadly weapon? Not one single person in the nearly 30 years of this pandemic has ever been infected by being spit on. It's ridiculous.

You're going to be ok.

Yea ann, it all stims from fear. People fear the disease so much they begin to fear bizzare ways of getting it. I mean in a way its not that hard to believe a person becomes infected and gets disgruntled and angry at the world. I mean ppl purposley infect people through sex so i gues its not hard to believe they would poke you with a syringe. idk thank you Ann

Ok, i thought this was over. I was very wrong. Earlier today we got a call from the school saying that the girl who stuck me tested positive for hiv and that they believe some of her blood was in the needle that stuck me. My heart sank and right now im just confused. this is so freaking annoying, the school is trying to make a big deal out of this when i would think they would actually try to cover it up, idk. my parents dont know im posting here or anything. its driving them crazy. Please tell me wat i should do or who i should contact. I mean it does look like this girl was trying to purposley infect me with hiv. Andy, Ann? what do i do?

Like Rod I do not consider you to have been at risk from this unsettling incident.

It seems rather strange that a school representative would call you and not advise you as to what you ought to do. Given when the incident occured you are past the point at which PEP should be insituted for a genuine risk. Personally I continue to have doubts as to whether this was a real risk.

Discuss this with your parents but as a precaution you ought to get tested at 6 weeks. Assuming you test negative as I expect you will, repeat the test at 13 weeks. A negative at 6 weeks is very likely to continue to be negative at 13 weeks.

Look kid, like Rod I have a hard time believing the story you've presented here. Nevertheless I'm gonna assume good faith on your part.

The advice Andy has given you is entirely consistent. Needlesticks such as you describe really aren't a risk for HIV transmission. If the girl is positive you might want to consider having a test performed for peace-of-mind reasons.

This really sounds like a school discplinary issue. You should talk to your parents and seek a further meeting with the Headmaster of your school. We cannot help you with this matter.
