This thread inspired me to ask some more questions and push a little cause i was worried about the cost of my new, first treatment.   Turns out after 700 a year out of pocket, it'll be free. Whew.

Madbrain,

I spoke with them and they did infact verify that getting the 3 separately would cost more.  My Doctor knows that the 3 are the same but said why take 3 when you can take 1.  I have just decided to check with the big box stores and pay cash and then get reimbursed from my ins. co.  It should get my Atripla price down to about $500.00 per month.

Maybe I should just marry money!  Darnit then I would need lipo and a facelift!  I'll just keep doing what I know.

Yes this is a can of worms, and they all have sharp teeth.

Going back to prayerblue's question:

In Texas, if you make less than 32K/yr (it varies) you can get help with your meds to make them nearly free.  $32K-$50K you pay some.  Over $50K and I hope you have a good job or no liabilities.

You can also join the THHIP  Texas High-Risk Health Insurance Pool which is approximately 30% more than the highest rate charged.  Which for me as a 36yo non-smoking male is about $400/mo.  There is a 12 month pre-existing condition clause, but than it covers your meds and is decent insurance.  It's not a handout like some of the big company stuff, but it beats a $1700 prescription.

Your other option is to participate in a drug study.  I chose this route and my meds are free.  As a bonus I'm on something you can't buy yet.  The risk is I'm a guinea pig and if something stops working I could find myself needing to be on other meds. 

Life is good isn't it?  lol, you can get coverage, it just takes some work.  Being HIV+ means your medical care is very important to your survival.

of course there is 850 billion to give the elites on wall street more huge bonuses

 leithal injection* is called capital punishment in usa -- unlike the capital that wall street gets INJECted with in a bailout

That's news to me.

The Declaration of Independence does mention the following:

Nowhere, in any of the founding documents is there a guarantee of Life. Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. Much less medical care There's a vast difference between constitutional rights and your pursuit of entitlements.

I have to thank you so much for making this post.  I've been HIV positive for 7 years and am being treated for testicular cancer as well.  I was recently dropped from my health insurance that I've had for 8 years.  I'm also self employed (not at poverty level but not wealthy enough to pay cash only for treatment).  After frantically searching for other options to continue with treatment and reaching nothing but dead ends, I came across your post.  To make a long story short, I live in Texas and qualify for this insurance.  I've never heard of it before and no one has ever mentioned it to me.  You extended a lifeline to me by posting this information.  I can't thank you enough.  Your kindness in posting this information has literally saved my life.

my atripla costs 1460 per month at the mom and pop pharmacy.    my co pay is just 15.00.   the pharmacy comps it becuase they make good money on the rx.     do shop around dude.   like everyone said.  Mech i was thinking the same thing as you with truvada sustiva.. anyway I see that got workedout

I dont think the POZ community can dump universally on all the pharm industry all the time...
Isn't it appropriate to shift blame sometimes to those governments that DO NOT get their health ministries and priorities functioning to guarantee treatment access to all poz people who need it - by rolling up their sleaves and working with said middlemen and said pharm corps?? 

Wow! ::)  At first I was going to give you a whack for taking a pro-Pharma position, but YOU ARE ENTIRELY RIGHT. Rugged individualism is best applied to other aspects of our lives than getting important prescription drugs by finagling, sending "contraband", etc. Guess what is missing from the latest version of US healthcare reform? A: The government buying drugs from suppliers at the lowest negotiable price, ie Up North! What a crock!  >:(  In my case I did have thoughts just last week, of a legal drug trip to some TJ pharmacy for my latest "denial" by my well-healed insurer. We are being scammed!
