Hello, advice please
« on: September 18, 2008, 07:28:57 am »
Hi, I had protected anal both ways with another man at the end of march/beginning of April.About 5weeks later I got thrush on my penis which is still here now despite using creams and pills. About 12weeks after incident I came down with a weird feeling of flu but it was just like I was tired and my legs really ached.I also got small blood red spots on my arms, neck and by my knees which are still here now(some look like tiny pin pricks). After about 10 days I felt ok apart from tiredness, but in middle of july 4 months or so after inciden my lymph nodes enlarged in groin and neck, occasionaly painful. Now in september the nodes behind my ears and armpits have seem to swell also, and have lost a lot of weight and my hair seems to be easier to fall out as in if I scratch my head I have 1 or 2 hairs in my hand.Do you think this could now be symptomatic hiv starting.

Thankyou for your time...

Worried,

Symptoms, or even the LACK of symptoms, will never, ever tell you a single thing about your hiv status. The ONLY way to accurately know your hiv status is through antibody testing.

Having said that, condoms have been proven to prevent hiv infection. You haven't had a risk. If you feel unwell, see your doctor. It could be anything causing your problems.

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex with a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through all three condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

ALTHOUGH YOU DO NOT NEED TO TEST SPECIFICALLY OVER PROTECTED INTERCOURSE, anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple.

None of the symptoms you are reporting are in anyway HIV-specific. But then if there has been a real risk -- and you didn't have a real risk not so incidentally - when there is a real risk symptoms will never tell you anything accurately about your HIV status. Only a test taken at 13 weeks will give you a final answer.

In your case as Ann has told you, testing is not necessary.

If the condom had failed you would have known it without a doubt. It's not about some teensie weensie hole in the condom. The whole thing gives way and you end up with it looking like a fringed hula hoop on your penis.

This is NOT an HIV situation. If your symptoms persist you should discuss them with your doctor.

Unless you were totally out to lunch during this incident, yes, it would have been very apparent before he removed the condom that it had broken.

Hello Im back again, Ive tried to get this hiv out of my head but I still have swollen nodes in neck and groin and the groin ones are painfull sometimes. Ive now had a chesty type of cough for about a month and just need to ask somebody with more knowledge/experience a couple of questions if you dont mind.

This was my first anal receptive ever, if he entered me without condom on or had a broken condom, would have I noticed when I gave him breif oral after he had been in me, ie fluids etc,

Was my brief oral after penatration a risk as there was most likely precum

My tongue now has a thickish yellow coating on it, but dont hurt. If this was thrush would I be having other problems like athletes foot as Ive had that for years but its been ok for months.

Thankyou for your time as I know you must get sick of answering these stupid questions...

worried,

There are hundreds of things that can cause all/any of the symptoms you list. Go see your doctor to find out what is causing yours. Whatever it is, it isn't hiv.
