Title: New Super-Bug Has Many Worried
Post by: tednlou2 on March 26, 2011, 02:21:45 am
Watched this news report tonight on ABC News.  They led their newscast with this report:

A new super-bug, called CRKP, is spreading across the country and has many very worried.  It is resistant to just about every antibiotic on the market.  The report says it is more vicious than MRSA and says CRKP works quickly by breaking down your immune system allowing a host of infections to set in.  The news report says 40% of infected patients die within a month.  The report says the most common mode of transmission is by touching, often shaking hands, with a doctor or nurse.  I've seen and read about this in regards to MRSA--basically saying we should just say hello to our docs and not shake their hands.  And, we should ask them to wash their hands before examining us.  I've also read where male doctors shouldn't wear ties, because ties are rarely washed and are full of germs.

So, does anyone know anything about this?  Is this just media hype like the bird flu?  We know MRSA is serious and they are saying this is worse.  Is this just one of those things that is out there, but most people never experience?  The part about breaking down your immune system is scary, since HIV is already doing that on its own.  Sorry to be Debby Downer here on the weekend, but thought it is worth discussing how to try to stay safe from this and other infections, if any of us are ever in the hospital.

Carbapenem resistant kebsiella pneumoniae, a bit of a bugger.

CDC page on this:

http://www.cdc.gov/HAI/organisms/klebsiella/klebsiella.html

It's not exactly new this, it's been around at least a decade.

Proper infection control in healthcare settings is paramount for this and other hospital-acquired infections. Hand gel, hand washing, and yes no ties.

It's media hype a little bit, must be a quiet news weekend.

At least you dont have to wear a condom to avoid this bug!  Seriously, the thought of getting anything that isn't eradicated by Cipro is scary.  I hope this is not just a springtime scare tactic for 'big pharma' to make megabucks with their upcoming fall/winter vaccines.  Sometimes I think everything just ties to money and profit (the American way!).

This worries me sliightly less than the cars that speed by me during rush hour on the roads that I must take on my bike, but which dont have bike paths. I guess it worries me less because germs are invisible.
They both could kill me or fuck me up good anyday.

Here is an interesting read about Superbugs and why only 2 companies (AstraZeneca and GlaxoSmithKline ) are doing research on new antibiotics to combat the superbugs, versus 20 companies  a few years ago.

Also it talks about a new superbug called NDM1

If super-germs are so scary it seems like bad business that more pharmas aren't racing for a treatment. Antibiotics can fetch very high prices!

Is it just me, or do we seem to hear about a new superbug every year? It never seemsto come to any big deal. Reminds me a lot of every time we hear about a "promising breakthrough" in the fight against AIDS, and it never seems to pan out. This stuff has become white noise at this point in my life :-\

Mecchie MEch, Did you even read the link?

There are two main reasons for this. First and foremost antibiotics, when they work, tend to cure people. Patients take small quantities for several days, a few weeks at most. That's not a very attractive revenue flow. By contrast, a patient on a cholesterol-lowering heart medicine will keep using the pills, and contributing to drug industry profits, for the rest of his or her life. Second, even if a new antibiotic is approved for sale, its use is likely to be reserved for serious infections -- once again, minimizing the sales opportunity. To cap it all, most existing antibiotics have been around for decades and are widely available as cheap generics, setting a very low bar for prices.

Yeah, I did.
And swiss pharma made a killing on Tamiflu.
If there is a super-bug scare and an available treatment, the pills will sell.
New antibiotics can cost an arm and a leg! Who are they kidding!

According to this, Donald Rumsfeld made some serious cash because of the whole bird flu scare.  Hmmmmm, wonder what he has really been up in his time off recently.

When the Dubbya Administration said we should stock pile duct tape and plastic in case of a biological attack, didn't it come out that the makers of duct tape were big RNC donors??  It seems like I remember something like that.  If not duct tape, it was some product they suggest we all buy.  Cipro saw sales go up with the Anthrax scare.  I try not to be a conspiracy theorist believing people scare folks on purpose for financial gain.  Well, I believe Dubbya scared folks for political gain.  All those terror alerts seemed to go away after the 2004 election.  I still don't know whether there was any truth to odd trading for airline stocks in the days leading up to 9/11.  I hear that one all the time.

haven't any of you been abducted by a bunch of muscle thugs

Kinda sorta once back in my college days.  I got off on the fact that one of the big guys picked my ass up, threw me over his shoulder, then carried me up 2 flights of stairs.

The view I had of his muscular glutes filling out those tight Levis as I gladly surrendered is a visual that sticks in my mind to this day.  We never had sex but it was erotic being abducted by 4 hot guys as part of my roommates rush week.  I never joined the frats, just went to lots of the parties as a guest of my roomie.

some of that individually but never all together.

Never been abducted.  In the 90's was ignored by tons of muscle marys -- does that count?   ;)
