HIV scare

(1/1)

Gong:
Hi!
I am male and on 20th of August I had vaginal sexual intercourse with an HIV positive woman.I used a condom but only noticed after I was done that the condom broke and my glans was exposed. On 10th of September both my parotid gland swelled and had dry mouth which lasted for a week and shrunk.Again on 19th of September both parotid gland enlarged which are painless with dry mouth. My parotid glands have never swelled before, could this be early HIV? Am waiting to test in October (3 month period).

Jim Allen:
Hiya,

The swollen glands are not HIV-specific. See your healthcare provider so they can check and treat whatever it is.

Regarding the HIV concern, understand that a condom broke during intercourse. Thankfully, until the condom broke, it protected you, and as the insertive partner, there is far less risk than being the receptive partner, but it does warrant testing to confirm your HIV status. That's presuming as we always do here that the person you were with is living with untreated HIV.

Test at six weeks post your last potential exposure with a blood draw (lab) antibody test. The result at this time will rarely change, and retesting at three months generally isn't needed.

Here's what you need to know to reduce your HIV risks:
Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse correctly and consistently, with no exceptions. Consider talking to your healthcare provider about PrEP as an additional layer of protection against HIV

Keep in mind that some sexual practices described as safe in terms of acquiring HIV still pose a risk for other easier acquired STIs. So please do get tested at least yearly for STIs, including but not limited to HIV, and more frequently if condomless intercourse occurs.

Also, note that it is possible to have an STI and show no signs or symptoms, and the only way of knowing is by testing.

Kind regards

Jim
