(1) can this test detect all strains of hiv? (2) do i neeed further testing due to symptoms? (3) can i now have sex with my wife? i am worrying i might infect her
i never had any sex since the exposure even with my wife and my marriage is falling, my wife wants sex and i refuses and she cant understand why

You don't have an HIV concern you tested conclusively negative way outside the window period.

Whatever is causing your symptoms has nothing to do with HIV. If your symptoms persist you should discuss them with your doctor to find out what's going on. It has nothing to do with HIV because you have reliably and conclusively tested negative for HIV.

You can safely have unprotected intercourse with your wife. You can't transmit a virus you don't have. Don't let your guilt over having strayed cloud your better sense. HIV is not your problem. Period.

I've merged your threads here. In the future please follow our rule as stated in the opening thread of this section. Keep all entries in this same thread. Do not start anymore new ones.

As far as your continuing concern about HIV, you have no basis in HIV science to be worried. You have more than reliably tested negative. You ARE HIV negative. Period.

If you can't let go of your unwarranted fears then you might consider seeing a counselor or other professional to discuss the problem. We can't address that need in this setting. All we can confidently tell you is that you have no cause for concern any further about HIV.

Bermuda,

The testing window period for hiv is three months (12-13 weeks) and has been for many years now, despite the fact that many doctors are not aware of this.

The vast majority of people who have actually been infected will seroconvert and test positive by six weeks, with the average time to seroconversion being only 22 days. A six week negative must be confirmed at the three month point, but is highly unlikely to change.

You tested hiv negative far outside the window period with a very reliable test. You do NOT have hiv.

You never said what, exactly, you believe was "very risky". Unless you had unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse, you've been worrying unnecessarily. You are now worrying unnecessarily anyway, because even if you did actually have a risk, you have conclusively tested hiv negative. YOU DO NOT HAVE HIV!!!

If you feel unwell, work with your doctor to find out what is actually wrong. Whatever that may be, it is NOT hiv. You have ruled hiv out as a possible cause.

thanx very much ann i just cant tell how apprecate what u guys are doing, my risk was that i had protected sex worker but i had open pimples where the condom ends and her fluids touched that area. here in africa the doctors are underpaid so they are always stressed. the doc who tested me was so rude and he never give me  any counselling. he just tested me and printed my result and told me to go. he had a lot of patients so no  time for counselling, u know how africa is. despite the negative result i have various symptoms such as swollen neck nodes, red pimples, lost a lot of weight( may be due to depression cause was not eating much due to the hiv scare). again thanx a lot u guys what ur doing is great

Well you were worrying needlessly because HIV is absolutely not passed in the way you have been concerned about. And even if you had a real risk, which I repeat you did not, you have reliably tested negative for HIV.

It's sad and discouraging that a doctor who ought to know better is giving out such misinformation about HIV and testing. He was wrong and you should forget about what he told you.

Get on with your life and keep using a condom everytime for vaginal and anal intercourse. Properly used they provide very effective protection.

I'm sorry, but while you won't find any judgment here, you will find a little criticism.

A) There was absolutely no risk for HIV in the incident you described.

B) You refuse to believe this, however.

C) Yet you are happy to have unprotected sex with your wife.

Which leads me to wonder:

A) Do you really believe that you had no HIV risk and are taking Andy's advise to heart? IN which case, this is simply residual guilt and anxiety acting up

or

B) Do you believe that you might actually harbor HIV or another STD, and either have no feelings at all for your wife (by exposing her) or are more afraid of the end of your marriage that you are concerned about your wife's safety?

Regardless, you have had no HIV risk. Whether you choose to believe that is up to you. I must say, however, that a man who suspects he might have HIV (whether the fear is legitimate or not) exposes a lot of his character be having unprotected sex with the person whom he supposedly cares about most.

In other words, either wear a condom with your wife until this scare/fear/irrational phobia has passed, or compound your guilt by fearing that you are passing a virus on to your partner.  Either way, neither situation can be resolved in this forum. We gave you the facts about HIV transmission. That's really all we can do.

Obviously, from a scientific standpoint, you are free to have unprotected sex with your wife.

But I question a person who actually, really believes he MIGHT be infected with an incurable chronic STD, whether that fear is based on science or not, who decides that it's even remotely OK to expose his partner to that disease.

"Many people, especially in the gay community, turn to oral sex as a safer alternative in the age of AIDS. And with HIV rates rising, people need to remember that oral sex is safer sex. It's a reasonable alternative."

hello
i believe what ann and andy said to me. even if i  had a a risk my test was neg at 21 weeks with no further exposure in the interim. so i waited to have sex with my wife for 21 weeks. she never knew the reason why i dont want to hve sex wit her.
but today i read on the internet that hep c can cause delayed seroconversion that is what got me freaked again.

Bermuda,

You also did NOT have a risk for hep C infection. Anyway, hep C coinfection has only ever been known to delay hiv seroconversion when the patient has been a long-term intravenous drug user and their health is already severely compromised as a result. Even in patients such as these, it is RARE for hep C to delay hiv seroconversion.

Keep posting about this NO RISK  and CONCLUSIVE NEGATIVE situation and you will be given a time out.

Also, if you keep apply for another new account - I've already rejected two or three from you - I'll permanently ban you. Do it one more time and you're out of here, for good.

PLEASE CONSIDER YOURSELF WARNED FOR THE LAST TIME!!!

YOU DO NOT HAVE HIV. End of story.

thanx guys
today i went to the a proffessional counsellor. we talked a lot about my situation. he told me our mind and stress can create a lot of symptoms.  diagnosing hiv based on symptoms is really awkward and can make one go crazy. i feel a little better. iam hiv negative. thanx god. my advice to other people is that the only sure way way to know ur status is through testing and if ur negative at three months or more post exposure trust those results and get on with ur life.

i asked the question on  purpose because iam in tanzania -east africa and iam living in rural areas. there is high circulation of fake test kits. that is people sometimes distrust the rapid tests and there is no lab tests that can be provided. i guess ur answer will give some relief to the tanzanians

Bermuda,

Whatever is going on with you has nothing to do with hiv.

You did not have a risk for hiv.

Even if you DID have a risk, you have tested conclusively hiv negative.

YOU DO NOT HAVE HIV.

I'm giving you that time out you've been warned about. Do not attempt to create a new account to get around your time out because if you do, you will be permanently banned.

Bermuda,

If you're tired of testing for hiv, the STOP testing for hiv. You are conclusively hiv negative.

Keep working with your doctor to find out what, if anything, is actually wrong with you. Whatever that may be, it is NOT hiv.

Bermuda,

I suggest you seek out the services of a qualified therapist. You need to get to the bottom of why you not only refuse to believe your conclusive negative results, but also insist that you even had a risk in the first place, which you didn't.

I'm giving you a second time out. Please go get the face-to-face help you need that we cannot supply.
