Alan Turing, Mathematician, recognized by Google...
« on: June 22, 2012, 10:42:32 pm »

Alan Turing was a genius and computer scientist who came up with way to do calculations via an early incarnation of a computer.  Unfortunately he died at 41.  Also underwent what amounted to chemical castration as punishment for being gay.

So a gay man was a pioneer for these computers we use today.

I have an elderly (very elderly) friend who, as a young woman, worked at Bletchley Park during the war. She would never talk much about her time there and I never got to ask her if she knew Mr Turing. I haven't seen her in a couple years now - I really must go visit her sometime soon.

Very nice that Google gave Mr Turing some recognition.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

Wow Ann.  I can only imagine the chat you two will have and the stories she could tell.

I was thinking of the movie "Breaking the Code," staring Sir Derek Jacobi.  I saw that movie and it was great, and I will try to see Codebreaker soon.

I just saw Codebreaker and it is really good.  I prefer to think that he was killed instead of suicide. Funny, I have just finished looking at Foyle's War series and this was a nice addition to the post war events.  Being Gay in the 1930's must have been easier than in the 1950's.
