Hey Panda,

The term 'Parenchyma' refers the functional part of an organ - or the structure(s) of an organ that do the work specific to that organ.

The Renal Parenchyma are the working structures that do the work of the kidney.  Demands on the kidney can shift with many things including treatments, chronic disease, diet, hydration, toxins, drugs, alcohol, pregnancy and age.  These changes show up as elevated renal function blood results that can and do usually self repair.

The most common health issues associated with kidney disease are high blood pressure, poor hydration, diabetes and alcoholism.  All HIV drugs can affect the kidneys but the drug most associated with Kidney disease is Tenofovir that can be prescribed on it's own or in a combination pill like Truvada and/or Atripla.

Hey Panda,

Viread is another name for Tenofovir, and this drug can certainly affect the kidneys.  As pregnancy can put extra strain on the kidneys it might be worth discussing alternatives with your doctor.  It sounds like your doc is on top of this.

Kaletra is pretty good on the kidneys but can cause diarrhoea.  Videx is strongly associated with lipoatrophy of the face and limbs.

Although you don't have kidney disease here is a link to nutritional information that has some good advice and remember to speak to your doctor before you implement any drastic changes.  Many HIV clinics have Dieticians on staff who can give one on one support and information.

Women planning pregnancy should take folate supplements at least one month before they plan to conceive.

All the best.
