Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Anyone who needs to post more than three messages in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum -- including past, present and future POZ Forums members -- will need to subscribe, with secure payments made via PayPal.

HIV RISK FROM THERMOMETER

Hello, I just found this forum, and I wanted ask a question about an incident I had yesterday. I have heard about some of the ways HIV can be transmitted but I am not familiar with all of them. Yesterday at my regular doctor checkup the nurse checked my temperature with a digital thermometer placing it under my tongue. 30 hrs earlier I was playing with my dog and hit my face against his, cutting the inner side of my lip and it bled a lot. (3/4 inch cut approx) I noticed that the nurse didn't change her gloves and didn't sanitize or cleaned the thermometer; however she put a disposable probe cover on it.

What is the risk of HIV transmission if the thermometer was previously used on an HIV +ve patient? (she didn't cleaned or sanitize it neither before use nor after using it on me). Should I wait to resume sex with my wife after being tested?

Under absolutely no circumstances can you get HIV from a thermometer or any other environmental surface. HIV is an extremely fragile virus and cannot remain viable outside the human body for any length of time.

Environmental factors such as temperature, pH, and the exposure to oxygen render the virus incapable of transmission.

Moreover, even if you were speaking in code and "thermometer" meant "penis of an HIV positive male" you would still not be at risk. Saliva contains over a dozen identifiable elements which neutralize HIV.

There is no risk whatsoever in the incident as you describe it.

Thanks for you reply JK, so should i resume sex with my wife? She says i am crazy and if i don't have sex with her she will do me when i sleep.
