Are you taking Complera?
« on: March 22, 2012, 12:47:28 pm »
Hi All,

My insomnia is still present after 5yrs and my ID doc has recommended a change from Atripla to Complera to see if it helps.

However, this drug needs to be taken with a 400-500 calorie meal and was looking for some advice before i switch.

Does this drug have a good half life? Currently i enjoy the fact that i can take my Atripla in the morning within a 1hr timeframe. I don't take it the same time everyday. Does complera need to be taken the same time everyday?

If so then that means you need to prepare breakfast at exactly the same time everyday?

Also, how does one find out how many calories are in your breakfast without this becoming a real pain. 500 Calories is quite a lot of food and it just seems much more of a hinderance than Atripla.

Anyone got any feedback for me?

 :)

Hi, I have been on complera for 5 weeks now. I prefer complera so far. I switched after 5 months on Atripla due to mind fog and a very high feeling for hours.

On good side:
hangover goes faster in the morning
I tend to sleep whole night most nights, vs regularly having sleep interrupted at 3am with Atripla
Quite like eating with food, Atripla made me so high that I would have to go hours without food ahead of taking it to reduce side effects

Down side:
Dreams are just as vivid as on Atripla, last night I dreamt I was decapitated and holding severed head in my hands (surprisingly not as horrendous as it sounds, the main problem was that I seemed  to be having trouble sticking it back on my neck lol)
I had a very strong rash reaction, but it cleared within 12 hours after taking Benadryl and has not returned

So that's the ups and downs so far, on balance complera is better for me because I am getting a clearer head during the day, longer sleep, and I have more of my social life back because it's clear headed enough that I can go out at nit after taking it

Hope this helps

Hey there,

New to this site, and recently diagnosed--in April. I read about both Complera and Atripla and was reluctant to take either because of the lactic acidosis warning. I was on this site, reading some posts regarding Atripla and from what I understood, a lot of people who started Atripla were in the hopes of switching to Complera because of some of the popular side effects. Anyway, I did mention to my doc that I was serious about taking Complera but still had fears of lactic acidosis. She said there was nothing to worry about and that she hadn't seen a case of it since 2004 and its more uncommon than what the label makes it out to be. So today was the first day I dropped Complera and I didn't feel unusual at all. It didn't affect my day whatsoever and I haven't slept yet but I will keep you posted as far as dreams are concerned. With the meal thing, I usually have a few different items to eat just so I could hit that 400 mark. But its something I'm not too worried about. Again, I'm totally new to all of this and can only hope for the best the next time I see my doc. Good luck to all of you!

Why don't you wait for the new quad pill coming out late summer? It's also a one a day without food restrictions and if your on heart burn meds you can still use them.

Perhaps because both the patient and his/her doctor decided to go on treatment right now. What is the point of asking this question? He/She just began treatment.

I've been taking Complera for 6 months with no side effects except for dizziness in the first couple weeks. No need to take it as exact time every day but it helps to taking it at the same time every day so it's easy to remember. I take it after dinner which is usually ranging from 6PM as earliest or 9PM as latest. If you're one of those humans who eats dinner or lunch regularly, you'll do fine. Here are some 400-cal meal suggestion http://www.complera.com/hiv-treatment-diet/

The poster has been on treatment for five years if I read correctly. That is why I asked that question. My Point was why not wait another month and a half since its already been five years. Perhaps the poster could have another option.

@Delby:  I've been on Complera for a little over 2 months. I haven't had problems with consuming enoungh calories before taking Complera, as I love to eat. So far I've been taking Complera around 9pm on average with the daily time ranges from 7pm - 12am. If you need help couting calories try www.myfitnesspal.com. I have found it to be very easy and useful. If you have a smart phone, you can even download their application for free so that you can count calorie anywhere.

I am very lucky that the only side effect I've experienced is numbness in the small area of the ball of my right foot. After six weeks on Complera, all my blood test shows very good results--from viral load of 59,000 to 250, CD4 from 300 to 350. By the way, Complera is the first med I've taken.

Hope this helps!

I take my Complera in the morning along with 2 Immodium. I also take 80mg of Nexium at night. My ID doc was surprised that the Complera worked so well on me because of the Nexium. I am still undetectable with my schedule. I travel quite a bit and the time zone differences don't screw me up any more than usual. I keep with my sleep schedule and when I take my meds regardless of the time zone.
