Indian generic heat-stable ritonavir
« on: December 18, 2006, 05:09:50 pm »
Indian generic manufacturer Emcure Ltd has announced the production and availability of a heat-stable formulation of ritonavir called Empetus.

Empetus will come in bottles of 30 tablets costing about $20 per month and still requires WHO pre-qualification.

This generic formulation has been produced prior to a heat stable version of ritonavir from Abbott (hurry up, Abbott).

Surprised a new formulation for Norvir (heat-stable) isn't already available.  If Kaletra has already been reforumlated with the new norvir, seems like a heat-stable norvir (on its own) wouldn't be too far behind.

Wonder if approval by WHO is more difficult, when the drug isn't a copy-cat per se...

Wow, I wonder how Abbott will react to this considering that they have pretty much held other PI manufacturers hostage to their Norvir, a month's worth of which in the US costs more than a year's worth of this generic?  That would be interesting to see.  Seriously, though, this is really needed in resource-limited settings because the current NNRTI-based regimens are already seeing failure rates due to development of resistance at 16% or more in one article I read.

heat-stable ritonavir

What a great idea.  Norvir is a pain in the butt, especially when traveling internationally. I also think it is a disgrace how Abbott jacked up the price.  The generic drug shows how cheaply it can actually be produced.

I would like to know if there are any studies that compare the quality of the generic drugs with their big-pharma equivalents?  If anyone had any info on this please pass it on.  My ID doc says the dosages of the active ingredients may vary in the generic drugs, while the regular ones are more consistent.  Is this a misconception or is there any truth to it?
