Are You an Old School Queen?
« on: April 01, 2007, 11:16:42 pm »
At my favourite watering hole I was aghast to discover their were homos who couldn't quote pithy lines from All About Eve and gave me blank stares when I yelled "Sing out Louise" at karaoke.  some even (gasp) "don't like musicals"!

Is the old school queen a dying breed?

Doris Day was a Dyke, and so was Rock Hudson.

I love Doris Day movies, especially "The Glass Bottom Boat" but Rock Hudson wasn't in that one.

I am constantly amazed at how many times I go to small town gay bars or hole in the wall neighborhood bars in big cities and see the Wizard of Oz playing...with someone inevitably reciting the lines.

I guess it's better than the constant insipid thud thud ting ting of the average gay bar these days where the most important question seems to be "who's spinning today".

Floating through the void in the caress of two giant pink lobsters named Esmerelda and Keith.

I like All About Eve... but mostly that's because it's an extremely well-written film.

I don't like musicals.  Except for the musical episode of Buffy.  That was awesome.

I finally saw "Mommie Dearest" last week, and it was HIL-arious!

But yeah... I'm not an old school queen... or any sort of queen, really.

I think the "gay community" (whatever it is) is becoming more... diffused in its cultural references.

I think that the old-guard bag of mouldy tricks has played out ("But-cha Ahhh, Blanche!), and overall that's not so terrible. But the essence of what made those things so endearing and enduring will remain "gay": camp.

It is our responsibility to humanity as good faggots to pull whatever camp can be found from any situation or cultural landmark, slap a coupla sequins on it and call it fabulous.

Without us, who would care about any "diva"?

We'll always have Oscar Wilde and John Waters.

Personally, my favorite campy moment from my generation would be everyone's favorite very special episode of Saved By the Bell.  The one with the caffeine pills.

Start singing the song "I'm So Excited" around anyone born betwixt 1975 and 1985, and they'll do this for you.

I can't pass a bottle of No-Doz in a drug store without re-enacting this scene in my head.

I used to watch The Patty Duke Show.

And everything else on Nick at Nite.

When I was 9.

I was the only kid on the block who could sing the theme song to the Partridge Family and say the jingle from Chuckles the Clown's funeral in the fifth grade.

All those "Better Living Through Television" and "Our Television Heritage" bits they did on Nick at Nite in the early 90s really fermented a healthy sense of irony and camp in my psyche as a child.

Needless to say... Nick at Nite made me gay.

Well, I consider myself "Old School" but only because I listen to Loleatta Holloway albums.  I've NEVER been into show tunes and piano bars, this I know.  I'm old school in that NYC/Paradise Garage sort of manner.  Rent the movie "Maestro" and you'll see what I mean.

The Wizard of Oz is one of my favorite movies, but I've never seen All about Eve.

I only have one Barbara Streisand album.

I have zero Britney Spears albums.

I went through a red hair and rhinestones phase, but it was inspired by Thompson Twins, not some dead movie star.

God I feel so alienated from the community now...

Let's see, "Old School Queen" Huh?

As far as movies go, I have to give kudos mostly to sci fi genre.  I just couldn't get into anything but Esther Williams movies, but later in life I discovered that the reason was the really nearly naked buff men in the background as dancers and swimmers.  Lust runs deep.

The nearest as an adult was when I my 1953 Chrysler Imperial Town Limosine for carrying one of the Empresses in the San Francisco Royal Court to the annual ball.  It was great because you could park the thing right on front of the auditorium and they would guard it.  Several of the Car Club members would do this, turning the street into a bit of a car show.  Other times I would use the Pink 1958 Cadillac for doing the same thing to the annual Black and White Ball, and finally the annual Hookers Ball.

Other than that, I once went to a Car Club Halloween Party, dressed as Rula Lenska, in red wig and all.  That was the last time I wore a dress, as the leather looks so much better on my body.

Fun..................

Love,

(edited for a damn dislexic year jumble on the Imperial)

I have about 5 Streisand albums but her best has to be "The Broadway Album" from years ago and I still get a chuckle from the closing song on Evergreen as she attemots to rock out.

Now on the ABBA front, I have most of their songs on their collection CD's.  Still love the songs after all these years.  How gay is that?

Next time may request poll more peoples can select from?

Yes, I Know Every Word to Somewhere Over the Rainbow No, I don't.
Sort of, I Admire the Gowns in Fifties Musicals  What 50s musicals?  I don't know any, unless fetid West Side Story came out in that time.   Old Joe McCarthy put a dumpster on musicals in the 50s.
I Think Britney Spears is a True Diva.    Definitely an untruth.  She is the Anti Pasto, I believe you say.
Who is Doris Day?   Doris Day was in 1956 version of The man who knew too much.  Nothing else needs be known.

I could not able to answer this poll.

Saved by the Bell? I like Mario Lopez. Does that count?

I have all of Barbra's albums, most of Bette's and had quite a few of Judy's until my ex snatched them.

I used to look good in leather too. I can still handle a mean cat! ;D

I do have to pity those younger gays who don't know who Judy Garland even is!  I was listening to her rendition of "I Happen to Like New York", where she turns a light and fluffy Cole Porter tune into a defiant anthem.  You can almost hear why her death was the catalyst for Stonewall (some say) which led to the modern gay rights movement.

PS, don't think I swan around all day lip-synching Judy, I can actually pull off butch pretty well.  Sometimes too well, as I always get mistaken for a top ;)

Of all the gay bars, drag queens, "Miss Hooterville" contests I have seen....I was extraordinarily surprised by a real treat in Montreal. Hands down, THE best Liza I've ever seen, and belted out New york, New York almost better then the real dame.
Wish I would have filmed it, but I was trying to find someone. Thank God/dess Creighton came along when he did, or I'd still be staring at kneecaps, and beltbuckles.

I love "Singin in the Rain." I heard Donald O'Connor was hung liike a donkey. Just sayin . . .

Debbie Reynolds is also a sweetie. I met her once when she owned that hotel in Las Vegas. A really nice person.

I can see it now, GSOgymrat and myself as Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor and Benj as Debbie Reynolds.

Works for me. ;) ;D

I adore Donna Summer.  I saw her perform at Carnegie Hall once with a live orchestra... phenomenal.

I ran for "Homecoming Queen" in a bar once.  I finished last place but was on a joint ticket with Tommy who won "Homecoming King."  I made posters, campaigned for votes but someone else won the Queen Tiara (made from a foil covered Burger King crown).

They said if I had not run for Queen, I would have won the "BITCH" category hands down.  The "BITCH" won a box of condoms and some lube.  Have the best day
Michael
