diagnosed after 6 months of infection

hi

i am new here...i just got diagnosed +ve after a blood test for a medical checkup 2 weeks ago...now when i think back, i knew when i was infected, it was back 6 months ago back in Feb. I had flu symptoms and felt depression for a few weeks (after i had sex with my boyfriend at that time, we broke up soon after).  During the past 6 months, i feel ok (without knowing i am infected).....do you think i have to start medication right away? i am going to see a doctor next thursday..and they told me they have to do more testing before medication...i am worried if the process will take too long....

i m in Asia, not sure how the procedure is in other part of the world....usually how long does it take from the first clinic appointment to starting your medication?

I'm sorry you got diagnosed positive but it is good that you found your way to our forums. We cannot give any directions to you until you have your tests done and you have a conversation with your doctor. If you were infected about 6 months ago the first test may just establish a "baseline start", and you will need to get a couple of more tests during the following 6 to 9 months to see a trend in how your body reacts to the virus.

It is too soon to wonder about meds, your priority is to get your tests done and have a good relationship with your doctor.

I cannot comment about Asia but I know there are a few members from Asia on here that may want to comment about the procedures.

Hi There

Sorry for your recent outcome.  I am not sure that you would have to start meds right away. Only your tests will show that.  I have been positive for 3 years that I know of and just started taking meds, not because I needed them but more for peace of mind.  I had some swollen lymph nodes and was tested and tested for Lymphoma and one of the lymph nodes got so swollen you could see it behind my ear.  That is the only reason why I went on meds, my doctor said it would help with the swelling and of course my leve;s but I was not at a point that I would need them for at least ten years based on my test results, as long as they stayed on the same progression.  

So if you ever need to talk feel free to email me.  Hang in there, things to get better, even though it does not seem like it.

Hi mesu, welcome to the forums.

As milker and k said the first thing you need to know is your tests results, the date of infection/diagnosis does not imply you need of meds immediatly. Meds are only needed when body is unable to fight the disease. Most people are able to fight it for some time when first diagnosed specially when they were infected recently (i have met people able to stay out of meds during 16 years). Off course i cannot say if this will be your case or not, but what i am trying to say is that you still have time to get things done properly and step by step.

My first labs took couple of months to be done (latin america) but you see... after 5 months of diagnosis... no meds yet. relax, go surfing around the site in the topics you might be interested... there are lot of answers for the questions you might have at this time.

First months are a bit hard to handle, but you will do it right... it just takes a bit of time. Be patient. We are here for you.
