Title: AMG 2018!!!
Post by: odyssey on January 02, 2018, 11:24:25 am
Well, seeing as we are now officially into 2018 (I believe on all points of the globe), I thought I might start a thread for ideas, comments, posts, etc. about a [potential] 2018 AMG.

I know that personally, I have not had a chance to see, I think, any of you in person since Seattle, and would love the chance to get together in person once again!

So.... let the posting begin!

I'd love to attend on of these, but would need to organise a  visa and international airfares, In previous years the decision /indecision seems to drag on forever leaving us international out of the picture.

Well, then let's not drag our feet, shall we? Perhaps it would be okay to post in some of the main threads letting people know we've started a topic for AMG 2018? Your thoughts on this?

I think that's an excellent idea, not to many people check the forums gatherings thread.

I think it would be grand to have another AMG!
I would ask that it be at any time other than the first full week of August. I am already obligated for that week.

To further get the ball rolling, here are my three suggestions about where to hold it:

1.) New Orleans, Louisiana

2.) Portland, Maine

3.) Santa Fe/Albuquerque, New Mexico

HUGS,

Mark

Hey Mark and all mydear friends here.  Hope all is as well as possible in this crazy world.  I'm not sure about travel this year, but I've always wanted to vlsit New Mexico so it's possible.  Portland, ME could be or Philadelphia, it's easy enough for me.

I would LOVE Portland, ME! I'll post later with my other nominations, if I even have any, but it's really late and I've been up for quite awhile doing work.

i have always wanted to attend one of these, let us know the venue and location before hand so we can arrange the international movement. :)

Okay, so Portland, ME has been suggested. I'd like to throw in two other suggestions:

Providence, RI

and

Baltimore, MD

If either of these have already been AMG host cities, please let me know so I can pick another suggestion.

Of note, if Portland, ME is chosen, I could probably HELP arrange things, as I'm not terribly far away and I know some stuff about Maine. Not saying I could do it myself, but I'd be willing to help out. Oh, and if anyone was curious, there is an Amtrak train that runs directly from Boston to Portland (stopping a few places in between obviously). That could be handy for people flying in, because it's usually cheaper to fly into a bigger airport.

Hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong on this one, but I've always been under the impression that it stood for Aids Meds Gathering. I think there is or was a website called aidsmeds that poz.com perhaps branched off of in the earlier days of these get togethers and we use the acronym AMG because when trying to get group rates at hotels, and plenty of other reasons for not going around 'advertising' our HIV/AIDS status.

I think there is or was a website called aidsmeds that poz.com perhaps branched off of in the earlier days of these get togethers

AIDSmeds.com
In 1999, Staley founded AIDSmeds.com, a site “dedicated to providing people living with HIV the necessary information they need to make empowered treatment decisions.”[41][42] It expanded to include topics including gay health, and education and resources related to gay health.[43] In 2006, AIDSmeds.com merged with POZ, a publication for people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS.[44] Staley is still with the merged organization as a blogger and advisory editor.[45][46]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Staley#AIDSmeds.com

because many of the members here in those early days were the people who survived the bad years of the plague when everyone seemed to be dying, we were a much more close-knit group in the early days of aidsmeds.com. As a group of online friends, those who wanted to participate voted on a location for a group vacation.

Usually some funds were raised that helped a few other members also be able to attend. As the AMG effort was started by Americans, the destinations were in North America (especially since America had an HIV travel ban for many years). I believe a small group of Europeans meet in a "mini-AMG" a few years ago. Last year there was no AMG and I don't think the Europeans scheduled one either.

we use the acronym AMG because when trying to get group rates at hotels, and plenty of other reasons for not going around 'advertising' our HIV/AIDS status.
using "AMG" helped us get group rates. It was never about hiding our status. I'm sure some people used the acronym as a shield; but every time I said something about the AMG, I had to explain what that meant. And there's not much more you can disclose after saying "aids meds gathering" LOL ;D

Hi,

Thank you for the clarification on what the acronym stands for and it does make sense.

I'm game for any of the locations already mentioned.  I know when I've done similar events in the past we held the event in a city with an airport just so we didn't have to have the extra expense of renting a car for those that had to fly in.  I'm also one for flying so anywhere away from Ohio or the surrounding states sounds good to me.

Thanks,
Kenneth

Sorry for my ignorance on some of those points. I wasn't trying to imply that using AMG as a term was an attempt to get group rates, I simply was under the impression that the term was used when "booking" our block of rooms because the couple of times I've gone I was told to mention AMG. I (incorrectly of course) made an assumption as to the reason for this and I deeply apologize. Having never taken part in the organizational aspects, I did not know the actual details. Thank you very much for correcting me (as requested  ;D ).

I hope we can get something going for this year. I've heard a few votes for Portland, ME (and I have to say Maine is gorgeous)! Is there any way we can blow an airhorn or something and get more people (especially those who have traditionally attended) to participate in the discussion?

but I agreed with you. :o "AMG" was the term/group used to get a group rate.

I just don't know that "AMG" was used in place of "AIDSmeds Gathering" to not disclose our HIV status. ;) It certainly didn't hide it for me, since I was usually asked what "AMG" stood for.  ;D

Okay folks, is there any way we could get an idea of who:

1) interested in attending an in person gathering of people from the poz.com forums (also known as AMG)

2) top three places each person who answered affirmatively to question 1 would "nominate" for the location of said AMG

3) ideal (and/or non ideal) times of year during which those who answered affirmatively to question 1 would be most likely to attend an AMG

Now, I've never set up a Google poll or any of those other fancy, high tech poll type things, but I think one of those might be useful in this sort of situation. I think perhaps if I, or someone else could set one up that one allow people to insert their forum username but otherwise ensure anonymity and we could get this pinned to a few main forums, perhaps the relative ease of completing a poll such as this would encourage more interest, participation in the brainstorming process, and hopefully in the actual gathering.

Any thoughts?

Also, do we have any pinned posts in any of the main forums with information on what the AMG is, where it has been held in the past, what we've done, our purpose (our meaning the purpose of those who get together in whatever year), where to find more information, where the specific thread is, who can come, and all that grand stuff. I kind of suspect that there might be a general lack of awareness of this type of information and I think it might go a long way to make it easy to find out by seeing if an admin could allow someone who writes well to compose an informative post (fact checked of course) and pin it at the top of many of the main threads that those who may not happen to wander down here (I am saying down because at least on my screen this thread ends up way at the bottom).

1)  Yes I am interested and want to go.

2)  Boston, MA, Orlando, FL, Seattle, WA

3)  I am big into Halloween so I do a big display in my yard in October but not even sure if I will do that this year.  Time of the year doesn't matter but based on my work schedule depending on the week depends on when I could attend.  I do the payroll.  If it was from Wednesday-Sunday I am sure I could attend.

I use surveymonkey at work (the free version) so I would be more then willing to create my own surveymokey account to do a survey for everyone to answer.  I could also set it up to no include identifying information (such as IP address).  I actually like setting up surveys but I am not a fan of the Google Surveys (Google Survey has issues).

I have no idea where it was held in the past as I am new to the AMG conference.

Also, if there is a group that gets together (teleconference) to create the conference I'm in if I'm allowed.

Thanks,
Kenneth

I do know AMG has previously been held both in Boston and in Seattle. I believe Boston was 2009 or 2010 and Seattle was 2010 or 2011. Not entirely certain on the years, but I certainly remember those locations being "hosts" in the past.

I have no clue if Orlando has ever been a host city. Perhaps someone with a bit more knowledge of AMG history than myself could chirp in answer that question.

I'm also not sure if there is even a "policy" (official, unofficial, or otherwise) on holding AMG in a city more than once. It seems reasonable to me that perhaps at least some of the people who attended AMG when the gatherings were first held (and thus those cities) might not be the same people who would be interested in attending a gathering now, and/or there would be a decent contingent of others who would be "newly interested" in attending AMG for one reason or another.

Ahh yes, surveymonkey. I couldn't think of the name of that, but it gets used a lot in psych surveys. When the brain farts, just say Google ______ and one is pretty much guaranteed that the thing exists. *snark*

They try to push the Google Survey at work but everyone that tries to use them has issues and they aren't that confidential.

When I've setup events in the past they normally like to have at least 15 years apart before they go to the same city again.  That normally allows for the city to change and not to get board going to the same place.  We did revert back to the same city two years later once but that was only due to a hurricane that came through and pushed us out of the city we had planned to go too.

I'll try to do some research online this week to see if I can find the prior cities we have went too.

Any hotel brands you prefer and/or don't like to go too?  Does anyone know the normal amount of participants that attend the event in years past?

Well, the two AMGs I've been to (Boston and Seattle), I seem to remember that the hotels we stayed in were what would nowadays be referred to as "boutique" hotels I think, i.e. they were not chain hotels to the best of my memory. I think we stayed at the Chandler Inn in Boston but I don't remember where we stayed in Seattle.

Also, I don't tend to feel super confident on confidentiality when it comes to Google anything. Seems like a company focused on a data mining gold mine.

Data mining what city your voting for is hardly world class intelligence  ;D anyway if you're concerned keep it simple just do a poll here using the forum software for location-/ time of year vote and once you close the poll and ask people who finally will attend to pm you their rsvp. Track it on an excel sheet

That's how I would do it

AMG has been held in (I don't recall the years of each city):

Toronto, Montreal, Mexico City, San Francisco, Boston, London (official AMG one year), Las Vegas (unofficial one the year of London), Seattle, Washington DC, Chicago, Memphis.  I think that is all of them, but I could be missing one.

As for any "policy" on repeating a city -- I don't think you need worry about that too much.  The wonderful thing about AMG's is that it is most about getting people together.  If the majority want to go to a "repeat" city -- then go.

The only thing about AMG where there were some policy and rules, was around the AMG Scholarships.  This makes sense, of course, as it involves money being donated, held and distributed.  There are threads on here that spell out all of that.  It isn't difficult -- I was part of it for a few years -- just need multiple people to ensure accountability.  One tracks donations, one collects, the committee decides who gets (there are rules on that too) and then distributes, according to the rules.

There hasn't been an AMG the last few years because it seemed like everyone was waiting for someone else to organize it.  The participation of some of the older members on these forums has changed over the last few years, so it's probably time for someone else (or a few someone else's) to step up and get the ball rolling.   If you look back through older posts, it will become evident that it isn't too difficult to organize, but it does take some time.  Of course, be prepared for the old "you can't please everyone" aspect -- complaints will be made -- just do your best and go with the majority.

I've always enjoyed them, been to 5 of them.  Not likely that I can attend this year, as I have already planned 4 trips this years.  Though, depending on where it ends up and when, one never knows.

Mike

I've been a member on the Forums since 2009, but frankly I've never organized anything even close to something like this... however, if there are one or more other folks who have a bit more knowledge and/or confidence in how to get this whole thing done, I'd be glad to team up.

I'm pretty good at researching all sorts of things on the internet... travel related and otherwise. I've just never done any sort of group booking myself.

Hi All,

It has been a few years since I have setup an event like this but I used to do it for 40-50 high school students in the job I had at the local community college.  Have you ever been on a bus from Ohio to New Orleans with 45 high school kids?  Lets put it this way I didn't sleep for the entire trip but I got good at walking the isle.

I've never been to an AMG event before so I don't think I would be the best one to be in charge of it but would totally be on the committee or eve co-chair.  From what I've been able to find doing my research the event was normally 5 days, had plane and hotel discounts, a t-shirt design contest, mini-committees, and did need donations to make it work.  Does anyone have an agenda from prior events they could post?  Also, the event was normally held in the summer or early fall months.

Also, from what I have learned these are the locations that past AMG's were held:

2006 - Montreal
2007 - San Francisco
2008 - Mexico City
2009 - Boston
2010 - It was either in London or New Orleans (I am thinking it was New Orleans)
2011 - Seattle
2012 - Washington, DC
2013 - Chicago
2014 - San Diego (Cancelled)
2015 - Memphis
2016 - ?
2017 - ?
2018 - Time to determine a location

I am also not a fan of Google to do the survey as I'm not sure how confidential they are.  I could also setup a survey monkey with the locations that have been mentioned within this thread, add in preferred length and what month works best for you.  I could get that out by the end of today if others think that would be beneficial.

As Mike mentioned this event hasn't been held the past few years as no one set the date.  No time like the present to start it.

Thanks,
Kenneth

Hi All,

I have went ahead and created a short survey so we can start to get everyone ideas in one place and hopefully get a top pick of location for this years AMG Event.

Please click this link (broken link removed) to access the short 10 question survey.  I have turned off IP tracking and it will be available until 11:45 PM EST on March 30, 2018.  Since the free version only allows 100 responses if we hit the max I will create a version 2 so everyone can participate.  I will post the results by April 1st.

Thanks,
Kenneth

I noticed on Facebook last night that there was some activity and interest in another AMG.  As some of you know, I have bene involved in the planning and site selection numerous times in the past as well as conducting (for lack of a better term) a memorial service each time.  I am saddened that we could not get a gathering organized since Memphis in 2014.

I don't check this as often as I used to, but now I will.  I have attended all of the AMGs except the original one in Toronto and the "official" London one (I did attend the "unofficial" Las Vegas one.

I have found no better alternative than this kind of gathering for us.  I hope we can come up with something that people will support.

I also just took the survey.

10) Location of future AMG events? Top picks - Australia (1), Canada (1), England (2), Germany (1), Mexico (1), New Zealand (2), USA (1), Ireland (1), Iceland (1), Safe country that speaks English (1)

It seems like we have the answer to many of the questions already, and they are as follows.

We will be holding the family friendly (spouses/domestic partners welcome) 2018 AMG Event in September, from Thursday to Monday and close to an airport.

But the only question that we still don't have an answer too is the location.  The top pics based on the survey are as follows:

Boston, MA
Portland, MA
Providence, RI
Santa Fe, NM

Please respond to this thread and what one of those locations you would prefer or fill out the attached single question survey.

Is there any way we can add the new poll respondents responses into the tallies?

Other than that my comment would be that it seems locations in New England seemed pretty popular. If we decide to do so, we could do what I believe was done in the past and put the top three (or so) locations up to a (run-off) vote or something like that.

Or we could attempt to agree on a location via discussion.

It's great to see some serious action coming along towards an AMG. I've been hoping for another AMG to happen for years!!!

Let's do this people!!!!!!!

Hi,

I had created the second survey to allow you to see the results once you submit the survey.  Hope it worked.  You aren't able to see the results prior to doing the survey.

We initially started with the discussion on a location but no one was deciding on a single location.  That is why I was thinking the survey with limited options (based on the responses in the initial chat), and to give a deadline.

Currently we have had 4 people respond to the second - location survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KYST672 (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KYST672).

Based on the 4 responses we do have a winner but it is open until this coming Friday.  I'm not wanting to give the responses yet as I don't want the responses after it to be biased, but if the group wants me to publish the results as of now I will.

Thanks,
Kenneth

I agree about not putting any 'results' in the forum until the survey closes. In the case we happen to have a tie, I guess we'd just repeat the process with whatever cities were tied... should that happen. I don't know... seems like an idea.

The last survey has closed and we have a winner (by a close margin).

We had a total of 7 people to respond to this survey and he results are as follows:

Boston, Ma (3)
Providence, RI (2)
Portland, ME (1)
Santa Fe, NM (1)

This means that AMG 2018 till be held in Boston, MA, family friendly (spouses/domestic partners welcome) 2018 AMG Event in September, from Thursday to Monday and close to an airport.

Thanks,

Great to see that you are all thinking about doing another AMG, I have attended 9 in the past, Toronto being our first, and loved everyone of them, I met so many beautiful people, and still to this day keep in touch with them.

Has it really been 4 years since we went to Memphis?  My goodness how time flies!

Hi,

Anyone live close to Boston that knows of some good hotels to stay at?  I can always google hotels but would be nice to get some perspective from others as sometimes the reviews aren't the best online (aka honest).

I'm a fan of the IHG brand hotels but want to get others input.

Thanks,
Kenneth

When we last held AMG in Boston, in 2009, we stayed at the Chandler Inn.  It was a nice smaller hotel and I recall that we got a decent rate.  They also had a nice bar on the first floor where we spent many evenings.

I lived in Boston for many years (in the '90's) so would be happy to give my thoughts on hotel choices -- but it would be mainly about location, etc -- would have no experience with any recent stays.  My recommendation would be to ensure your choice is within walking distance to one the "T" stops (subway) -- ideally, to multiple lines.

Hi All,

Hope everyone is having a great weekend and you are starting to enjoy the spring/summer weather.

I have put out a request to the hotels in the Boston area to see about getting group rates.

What type of events would you like me to see about getting together?  i.e. dance, dinner option, a tour of Boston, aquarium, ball game (if there is one), etc.

In addition, what type of events would you NOT want me to plan?

Flight costs are always the interesting challenge.  I'll contact some of the airlines to see about getting a discount but unknown about that one yet.  Then again when I have flown with other group discounts I was able to get a better rate without the group discount code (yes seems odd but happened every time).

Thanks,
Kenneth

Hi All,

Sorry for the reply to my last reply so quickly.

I have contacted the hotels in Boston to get quotes on group rates from 9/11/18-9/16/18.  This is the only dates that work for me so hopefully, it works for everyone else as well.

My general idea of the itinerary is below.  What are your thoughts and I'd like/encourage your input?  What other events would you like me to potentially schedule?  Also, if there is something I have listed that you don't like please let me know that as well.

AMG Gathering - 9/11/18 - 9/16/18 (Tuesday - Sunday)

Arrive in Boston, MA – Tuesday (9/11/18)
Boston – Go Card (2 or 3-day option)
Baseball game – Blue Jays at Red Sox – Wednesday (9/12/18) @ 7:10 PM
Hotel - Dance - Friday night (9/14/18)
Salem Ferry – Saturday (9/15/18) – Full Day of fun in Salem, MA
Depart to Home – Sunday (9/16/18)

All options will require a minimum amount of reservations and I would like to know if you are planning to attend.  Depending on the hotel I will need at least 20+ people to RSVP by the end of this month to set up group rates and to contact other vendors. Once I find out the cost of the hotel I'll post that and then request RSVP's so I can determine if we will be holding the event this year.

Thanks,
Kenneth

Thanks so much Kenneth for your great work in trying to keep our wonderful gatherings going.  Thanks as well to other folks fine efforts.  Unfortunately I won't be attending.  Boston is a great, fun town with lots to see but it's not in the cards for me in the forseeable future.  I have no current travel plans, I'd like to go somewhere warm next winter for sure.  Hugs and be well my friends, old and new.

Hi Jody,

Sorry that you can't make it to the event this year.  Hopefully, you can join us in future years.

Two hotels have got back to me and it looks like Hampton Inn Boston Logan Airport is going to be the best option for an average of $210 a night (plus taxes).  230 Lee Burbank Highway, Revere, MA 02151 US

I also have a quote from Holiday Inn Express Boston for an average of $219 (plus taxes) a night but includes breakfast.  There is a fee of $5 for the shuttle from the airport.  69 Boston St. Boston MA 02125

I'm a Holiday Inn person so might be worth it for me to potentially see if they will match the nightly rate that Hampton Inn has offered.  Also, Holiday Inn guarantees the price for 3 months where Hampton Inn is only 1 week.

Any opinion?

Thanks,
Kenneth

I would say that neither of those hotels are in ideal locations to allow you to do things.  Not that close to "T" stops or to any areas that you would really want to visit.
Hampton Inn is in/near Revere, not much there besides Revere Beach (though, Kelly's Roast Beef on the beach has amazing fried clams).
Holiday Inn is in/near Dorchester and in a VERY BUSY AREA for traffic.

Again, I would recommend talking to more local places, like the Chandler Inn.  They are better located to the "T" (public transit) and walkable to some areas that would be of interest to visit.

Just my "two cents" as a former Boston resident.

Hi Mike,

I had put out a request to The Alise Boston (formerly Chandler Inn) to see the rates they can offer.

As I am not from Boston I am basing everything on what others tell me, online reviews and even what the sales people tell me about the distance from the T and other destinations.  In addition, as you get closer to the city center the cost of the hotel rooms get exponentially higher so trying to balance price and distance.

I'll keep everyone updated as I get new details.

Thanks,
Kenneth

Hi All,

I am thinking until I get more interest in an AMG event I will put off booking a hotel.  Most require a minimum booking and I don't have enough money to pay the remaining balance.

If more people show interest I will look at hotels again.

Thanks,
Kenneth

Well, seeing as we are now officially into 2018 (I believe on all points of the globe), I thought I might start a thread for ideas, comments, posts, etc. about a [potential] 2018 AMG.

I know that personally, I have not had a chance to see, I think, any of you in person since Seattle, and would love the chance to get together in person once again!

So.... let the posting begin!

odyssey

Was this ever decided ? I have never attended but would like to should the opportunity arise.

Hi Joseph,

I hope your day is going well.

We had a few people respond about a time and location but there wasn't enough interest to book a hotel.

It would still be fun to have a gathering but would probably be more informal if we had one now.

If we had more respond wanting to do something I could always look into hotels again.
