That didn't last long. The judge stayed his ruling while it's being appealed to the Iowa Supreme Court.

Equality's reign was brief. But 21 licenses were issued , and apparently a small number of marriages took place, before the stay was announced.

Sure. Until the State Supreme Court ("and such," hahaha) or some other body applies an injunction! Progess can be quite funny (and temporary)!

I was born in Iowa and spent the majority of my childhood and half my adult life there. I was a Deputy Sheriff there, and I feel that Iowa is a kindler gentler place than the state I live in now. I live in Seattle, Washington with my boyfriend and we are both struggling with addiction to methamphetamine.
Before I moved to the Pacific NW, I hadn’t so much as smoked pot, but here I got into meth and the perceived acceptance by the gay community I felt that came from using the drugs. I ended up with HIV, and all that perceived acceptance vanished when I quit using. Today I count about two friends in Seattle who I can turn to but countless friends in the Midwest.
While we have for the most part come to grips with out addictions, my boyfriend was arrested this week and will be doing a month for a possession charge dating back to before our meeting. It took two days of begging, fighting, and crying before jail officials in King County (Seattle) would let him have HIV meds. At first they said they would not allow it. I went to the King County Ombudsman’s office, the court house, the county health department and our local ASO and nothing could be done to get the jail to give him his meds. When I was able to visit him through a glass window, his only request was that I get them to give him his meds.
After ending our visit I asked as kindly as I could for a guard to help him, and the response was what makes him so special? For a few moments I thought I was going to be arrested on some trumped up charge until I had the thought of saying that if he didn’t get his meds I would call King 5 News. That brought results, and my guy got his meds. Yesterday he was transferred to a small county jail about 100 miles from Seattle, and the response from his new jails staff was incredible. They went out of their way to help us, allowed me to bring him his meds including Xanax. They let him call me, while I was at work trying to hold it together he called and I cried just to hear his voice. The new jail out in the sticks wanted to make sure his gay partner knew where he was and that he was okay. The only way I found out that he was in jail in Seattle was by searching booking records inline for 20 some hours after he didn’t come back from walking to the store.
So, in a long drawn out way I’m saying I’ll take quiet old Iowa any day over so called liberal Seattle. In Iowa at least people care about others, sure they may talk about you behind your back, but they don’t go out of their way to hurt you

I'm sorry for what you went through and continue to go through, but I think what is happening to you in Seattle is not alien to the Midwest.
That said is it possible for you guys to move back to Iowa after he gets out? I think you crave familiarity, family and friends and maybe starting over back where you know your surroundings is not a bad idea.

I live in Iowa now. ;D ...And I work in the office where they issue marriage licenses ;D (just in a different county) We didn't have any gay couples apply, although I wish someone would have. It definitely started a debate in our office - and they call themselves democrats - hmmmm. I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens.

Now... I wish I'd gotten it together and married my partner of 23 years, because… we could have.
We'd been legally married now, and the press would be following us around, calling and who knows... "Good Morning America" or "The Today Show" interview??? :o 8)
Living in iOwa and all, I just missed the opportunity. My big bad...
I didn’t realize that day...
#1. we could have gotten a license
#2. you could pay $5 and have the three day waiting period waved
#3. got a minister to do the ceremony and actually BEEN MARRIED LEGALLY
Now, I just feel like a idiot for not having it together and ready to pounce on the "probably" once in a life time opportunity.
I didn’t do my home work on the issue of marriage. Did not know the procedure(s), or that there was even a 3 day waiting period, and that the waiting period could be waved,
and that most Unitarian ministers would conduct a gay marriage.
Heck, back in the 1970's, the Unitarian church, just 5 minutes from me, was where we held the MCC services. They gladly let the local MCC use their church, on Sunday evenings, for services.
As a gay person and someone that never ever thought I'd have had that "marriage" opportunity, I really did not even know what the procedure(s) were to get married. So as a heads up to others, even in states like Tennessee or Ohio or wherever, I'd play the "what if" game and think thru all the procedures you'd need to follow just incase this opportunity comes to you too, out of the blue, like it did in Iowa for a few hours. A very short opportunity window that opened. And one had to be really on the ball to take advantage of it. I wasn’t, and I'm kicking myself now.
Even though the one iOwa couple that WAS on the ball and actually got married, the one gay couple that are now legally married, even though it may be short lived, as I see it, it may not be so short lived after all. I mean, stopping other gays in iOwa from marring has happened But… iOwa may have to pass a special "law" to undo that one couples legal marriage. Something that will really bring the issue to a head with the people. And this couple will no doubt, I'd think, be involved with taking this issue all the way to the iOwa Supreme Court.
Something I would have LOVED to be involved with. And actually been able to really do something for gays in general and the gay marriage issue.

Hmm, I don't know much about Iowa, but I've heard they can be cold as a falling thermometer in December if you ask about their weather in July. And they're so by God stubborn they could stand touchin' noses for a week at a time and never see eye-to-eye.

This judge made his actions for one reason only. That is so it could be appealed to the Supreme Court so he wouldn't have to listen to the arguments again. He now has it out of his hands.

Wow. That's quite a story with more than a couple morals beyond "jail sucks". Iowa was only progessive for 13 hours last week. Haven't been there in decades.
