I DID IT!
« on: January 19, 2008, 11:46:23 pm »
After the 2007 year from hell....2008 had to be better! So far so good! It started on January 1...its a southern tradition that you eat Hop-n-John (black-eyed peas and rice) on New Years Day. In the bottom of the pot of black-eyed peas you place a dime and whoever gets the dime has the best luck for the year... I got the dime...I keep it stored safely in my wallet. So I get a call from a nonprofit in DC to come and interview. I have been living in hell in SC since June. So I called a friend he let me house sit for him while he was out of town and I drove up for the interview. I gave a great interview, and they said it looked really good and that I would know in 1 week. The next morning though I got a call from a property management company that I had applied to....they set up a personality profile test online that I took. Guess I did pretty well cause they set up a phone interview with me (which got postponed over the weekend to the same day that I was supposed to hear from the nonprofit.) The nonprofit never called, turns out they were having problems getting in touch with my references. Well that phone interview with the property management company went really well, and they set up a meeting with the regional VP for Friday, did that interview and she immediately sent me to meet with a property manager. Two hours after getting home....after almost a year without a real FT job...the property management company offered me a job! Still haven't heard back from the nonprofit, but they were going to pay about 15000 less anyway! I will be able to go back to school this fall, grad school here I come! I have moved into a nice 2 bedroom apartment on Capital Hill, have a roommate I met through a poz social group here in DC too. He is a teacher, just like I used to be so it seems a good fit. I have my furniture back, I have a life again, and soon my cats will be up here with me! I will start the new job in a week after my drug test and background check. The only draw back is that I have to sometimes where either a purple shirt or tie...I really hate purple!

Now Tuesday when I go see the ID doc and get the blood drawn all I want is to be undetectable. Been on these meds for almost 3 months now...really want to be undetectable :)

Just wanted to update y'all....lot of you read the thread I had on my thoughts on my life....but I didn't want to use that thread again...it was very negative, nothing good had ever happened to me. I am glad for the change! Praise the lucky dime!

Great news Matt, I hope you hold on to that dime and keep it in safe place.

It's amazing what a year can do, I'm glad you didn't give up and loose sight of the future, because it looks like you have have alot to look forward to.

BTW... purple is very spiritual, and I'm sure you will look great in a purple shirt... ;)

Congratulations Matt!

A friend once made a "mojo bag" because I needed a job and much like you did.  It contained a piece of gold and a piece of black obsidian and was in my pocket through the entire job search, the interview and the first two weeks on the new job.  The gold piece had special meaning to my friend and when asked, I gave it back and went to work the next day to get relieved of my duties.  Never lose that dime and have the best day

Great news!   So glad you are having a stroke of good fortune.

Wear that purple shirt, and wear it with pride!    (of course, I love purple so it wouldn't bother me)    Is it part of a uniform with the property mgmt company?  I love jobs that have uniforms.....makes life so much simpler.

hugs,

Thanks guys! I feel like I am starting an entire new life. I am going to miss teaching, but not dealing with teaching. I will miss my parents, but not living with my parents. I will miss a lot of things, but my new life is one of acceptance and a raised self-esteem. I would really like to think that the feed back, love, and support that I have gotten here have helped a great deal in that. I have made new friends here that I know I can count on for kind words and no nonsense advice. Between y'all and the lucky dime in my wallet...everything is going be just fine!

To a new year, a new life, new friends, and a new me :)

Starting Monday! I am going to be leasing for Post Properties...I used to a long time ago be a property manager. I know the apartment business well so this is kinda a rerun. But at the same time I am going to be going to school at George Mason Univ getting an MPA Masters in Public Administration concentrating in non-profit management and also getting a Certificate in Public Policy for non-profits. Ultimately I want to work for an ASO or a Gay and Lesbian Non-Profit :) I could also work for an education non-profit.

In the mean time its leasing apartments, so if anyone is moving to DC...come see me lol!

OH YEAH!! Started my job 3 weeks ago. One week of training and now at the end of the 2nd week...been named Leasing Consultant of the Week for the entire company! Who hoo!

This year is a totally new life! After last year...I am a happy person!

Even though parts of my personal life still blows...and not in the good way. My life seems to be heading finally in the right direction. Good job, school starting in the fall....there is this really nice guy I met...ok he lives across the country ;) but he is really nice and a joy to talk to. I have my stinky pup (who is proud a beagle finally won Westminster) and soon will have the cats here with me. Have an amazing townhouse apartment on Captial Hill with exposed brick walls. And at my new job there is a herb gardern (no not that herb) but since I love plants, I am getting to turn it into a vegetable and herb garden. I ordered seeds and peat pellets and a little greenhouse, and the enire garden will be grown by me from seeds!!! How cool is that!

A lot of this is thanks to you guys. Kind words, honest talk and information.

THANK YOU ALL!!!!

Matt

Matt, I'm so glad to hear you're doing so well.  Yes, I remember what you went through.  Aren't you glad you stuck it out now?
Good luck, have fun, big hugs etc.

Wow, Sacinsc, sounds like everything is falling into place for you.  I am happy you are having a better year! You must be a real ball buster if you got Leasing Consultant of the week after such a short time.  You the man!  :)  That is great that you have the time and patience to grow things from seeds, I envy you.  The kids and I tried that this summer and didn't fare too well  :-\  This year I think I will try a different spot in the yard.  Enjoy all your great rewards!
Take care,
Snow

Sac---

Congrats on everything. All that from eating black eyed peas and rice with a dime in it. I guess that is why I don't  have any luck, I hate beans.....Yuck!!!! And the herb garden, well, you definitely need to give me your trade secret on how you get your herbs to grow... ;) I am glad to hear that everything is coming full circle for you.

Nice guys :) Thank you all so much. Just sitting here smiling! This place means the world to me. Friends I have here are worth more than many of the friends I have from day to day!!!

Your Green Tip:

The secret to starting plants from seeds is really simple. I use peat pellets. You can buy them at any garden store or order them online. You soak them in water for about an hour and they expand into this can shape. There is a little hole in the top where you drop the seed in. Put the peat into a clear plastic cup with saran wrap on the top to get it from dehydrating. The seed sprouts in the peat, and once its about an inch up you transpant the entire peat pellet and plant into a small pot. Let it grow there with sun and then plant the entire thing into the ground. Growing them in peat is the best thing for them, lots of nutrients and soil. And you don't over water them since the peat has all the water soaked up. Start growing about 8 weeks before you want to place them outside!

They shipped my seeds and peat pellets today! Got the notice in my email, this weekend I will have dirt under the finger tips again! Hooray!
