song of the day
« on: November 08, 2014, 09:57:15 am »
i believe live music is good medicine

i'm curious what kind of music you guys listen to... i mean what you really enjoy, not some funny internet ditty.

i was raised on bluegrass, listen to a lot of jamband music, somewhere in there i picked up djembe circle drumming... and that really is magic medicine

so, i'll share what i listen to, and i'm interested in what works for yall

three to start

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_fwgkpghtM widespread panic, home town boys for me and tim. they came on the scene in my teens... seen them countless times, last month on my birthday with my sons was great

http://tinyurl.com/nwn8pfs greensky bluegrass, like raw milk, good bluegrass is an aquired taste... there will be banjos. i saw these guys last month too, a little room, smoking hot

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIyjTpUFf9M the grateful dead, cause if it's good enough for jody then by god... a legendary show, i wasn't there, my oldest son was born that night

I love Classic rock...Joplin, AC/DC, Van Halen, Seger, bands of that nature.  I also like Prince, always have since his first album.  Oh, plus ZZ Top, Bowie and.38 Special.  I stripped to quite a few of those bands' songs lol.

have you heard anything from the 2 new albums he recently dropped? With "Plectrumelectrum" Prince fronts a girl rock band ("3rdeyegirl") - and boy do they rock. The other one, "Art Official Age", reminds me of "O(+>", with an array of tunes from rockin' to r-n-b and some great funk. I've barely listened to Plectrumelectrum cause I've really been grooving on Art Official age.

Since you've been laid up, have you have the chance to catch him on SNL from last week?

Mickie, I had no idea he was on SNL!  I wonder if it is on "on demand."  I'm going to have to check it out.  I have not heard either of his new releases.  I can't think of anything he's done that I do not like.  Well, if I went song by song I'm sure there are a few.  Prince hardly ever disappoints.

The Dead, Allman Brothers, Jefferson Airplane, The Who, the Stones. the Doors...Also Dylan, Leonard Cohen, the Mamas and the Papas, Fleetwood Mac, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Chet Baker...Also like softer music on occasion like Kitaro- Oasis to mellow out.  And classical music now and then, nothing wrong with a little Mozart!

Hugs to all, Jody :)

Elton John and Bruce Springsteen were also great live in concert.  And though I never saw her live I think kd Lang did the best version of Hallelujah ever.

Love all things Zeppelin and KD Lang ... she is a gift to the universe . The happiest I ever saw KD Lang was standing in the shadows singing backup with 5 other singers for Roy Orbison .

I am not familiar with the band that covered the Zep song ... will fic that .

Lol, that's one of my favorite songs actually.  Saw ZZ live around '91, when Notre Dame used to have concerts, before they got so stuffy.

Doubt I could do the pole with this whole-leg cast.  But hey, it's purple!

a couple this morning while the ham bakes, both sort of hit a mood i'm in

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Weu3qj4IYDg betty and jeff, thanks, trying hard to stay out of that hole, pretty sure what i pulled last night qualifies as a leap of fear... steve earle, way down in a hole... a tom waits song (his version is too raw and real)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vf_xO3wtpfw little more optimistic than the last couple songs i posted... banjo y'all, i will make believers out of yuns

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVkglGFSDEs just cause i'm on yonder, a gift for jody... how bout them drummers  ;D say it with me now, all together... 50th anniversary TOUR!!!!! ommmmmm

i miss my grandmother, when i was diagnosed, when of the first things i thought... i was thankful she wasn't here to have to know this... i've sat at her grave crying so many times since... this singing sounds like my people

see if yall can handle some of this... the first one, watch your volume... sacred harp, shape note, fa so la singing.. all terms for the same thing. This is Liberty Baptist in Henagar, Al... Tickanetley Primitive Baptist where I'm from still sings this way. Highly recommend the movie Cold Mountain.

And am I born to die?
To lay this body down!
And must my trembling spirit fly
Into a world unknown?
A land of deepest shade,
Unpierced by human thought
The dreary regions of the dead,
Where all things are forgot.
Soon as from earth I go
What will become of me?
Eternal happiness or woe,
Must then my portion be!
Waked by the trumpet sound,
I from my grave shall rise;
And see the Judge with glory crowned,
And see the flaming skies!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oK27xTPDdCk call and response gospel... Amazing Grace, Ralph Stanley

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0wKxFPCz1Y Cuckoo Bird,  This ain't gospel, Clarence Ashley. This is old time music, the predecessor to bluegrass... the style of banjo is called clawhammer or drop thumb, different and much easier than bluegrass three finger style that Earle Scruggs made famous
