Are you searching for only local participation?

Hello Leatherman, yes we're currently looking for volunteers in the NYC area since you'd have to come into our office for the screenings and bronchoscopy. Unless you're able to come into NYC for your screening days.

I just took a pic of the posted flier, at my HIV clinic here in Louisville.  I was going to enroll.  It looks the same or very similar to your study.  Is it the same?  Yours seems different, looking at genetics over "oxidative stress."  I felt I could help research and maybe if there is something going on with my lung health, they may find it early.  I have had bacterial pneumonia twice, so I hoped maybe this study would also study why some HIV patients may be more prone to get it, even if they don't smoke.  And, how lung infections impact lung health.  I have no idea whether it will look into that.

I couldn't help but notice the compensation differences, between Louisville and NYC.  I would have thought NYC would pay more, for some reason.  Just something that had me curious how these studies compensate, but the main thing is helping research.

Hello Almost2late,

The phone screening takes about 15-20 minutes

The initial screening when you have to come into our office will take about 6-8 hours and includes physical exam and various tests (urine/blood, EKG, breathing, physical exam etc). We try to complete the initial screening within working hours (9AM-5PM).
Results take 1-2 weeks to come back and if you qualify then the

Bronchoscopy will take 2 hrs another day.

Hello tednlou2,

Yes, our study focuses on whether HIV makes smokers more susceptible to developing lung disease. It definitely helps having individuals like yourself participate in the study! Please consider enrolling for the Louisville research.
