Update: Another Outpatient Procedure
« on: December 19, 2006, 10:12:44 am »
12/20/06 Update:
I went for the broncoscopy today. It was not to bad. I took an ativan before I went, and felt pretty out of it even before I got to the hospital.

Because of the study restrictions (certain sedatives are not allowed), and since my trachea is narrowed (they had to put some cover over the enlarged area, and my vocal cords so they did not cause more damage with the tube), I had general anesthesia, so I don't remember anything. I woke up about three hours later, a little sore in my chest, slightly sore throat, but otherwise just groggy.

They did find a narrowing of my trachea, a polyp on the trachea, and something in the bottom sections of my lungs. The doctor removed the polyp, took swabs and a biopsy of the bottom part of the lung. They also took pictures of everything, which always amazes me when I can see inside my body.

My ID doctor came into recovery, and they put a rush on the pathology and lab results, so I should know by tomorrow what they found.

Right now I am at home, a little sore in my lower chest area, and coughing a fair amount, but otherwise just sleepy.

One thing that happened in recovery I thought was odd. I was half awake- half asleep, and I remember crying. Tears were running down my face, but I don't remember what I was crying about. It was before my family came in, and I did not say anything to them because I did not want to upset them anymore than they were. Perhaps the reason will come to me later.

Thanks everyone for your well wishes. I read them again before we left this morning, and it does help to calm me, and give me strength.

Christine

Hello Everyone,
I have another outpatient procedure scheduled for tomorrow. I have had a nasty cough that has not gone away for about two months. Went through two rounds of antibiotics, chest x-rays, doctor visits, and then last week I had a ct scan done, and they found abnormalities in my lungs and trachea that look like CMV damage.

So, I have to have a broncoscopy done tomorrow. A tube is sent down the throat, under anesthesia, and a swab and possibly a biopsy is taken. Next step is based on what is found on the swab.

I wasn't to nervous about it until today, so if you can send your good thoughts and prayers this way I would appreciate it. I will keep you updated on the results.

Christine, that test isn't bad, unless they tell you everything you said while you were under. I've had it done and they wanted to put me back under to hear the rest of the story I was telling them. Thank god they didn't tell me what I was talking about.  ;) Good luck on your test.

Christine,

Over the years I had two already.

Feelings anxious about it is normal, but it was not as bad as I though it would be, honestly.

You are awake as they are starting to insert those tubes in, so that you still have your ability to swallow, but very quickly than they put you out.

Throat is sore for a few days, but it is manageable.

I will be thinking of you tomorrow, and I guess looking forward to get mine again on January the 16.

Take care and let us know. Alain.

Christine,
I had a broncoscopy a couple weeks ago when I was hospitalized for PCP.  All I remember is the Dr. telling me to inhale this Novocaine-like spray through each nostril, which was nasty.  Then I had to inhale it through my mouth, which was even nastier.  It tasted like the shots the dentist gives.  Then I remember them holding some thin tube up and then I remember being back in my room and lunch was being brought in.  It really wasn't that bad.  My throat was only a little sore, but my voice was scratchy for a few days.... I sounded like a three-pack a day smoker!  Since you'll be under anesthesia, you probably won't remember a thing ('cept that spray!)  Good luck and I'm sure it'll be over before you know it.

Hey Christine,

Sending some thoughts your way for a quick and uneventful broncho.  I had one done last year, and like David said, the stuff they sprayed up my nose was absolutely disgusting and the worst feeling I ever had.  I was awake the entire time, but my nose, throat and beyond was numb, it was that spray they used that tasted disgusting and my nose and throat felt a bit raw for a few days.  It was certainly odd watching them put the tubes in, but it was over before I knew it.

They were checking me for the same, CMV damage/PCP and to see what my Oesoph. Thrush was doing....  I had been coughing for 4 months... ahh those were the days.

You'll be fine.
