Quick Question on my new lab results

Hi Everyone :)

I just have a quick question on my recent lab results.
I've been undetectable for several years now ( thank goodness) and the lab result
was always written as <50.
Today, they were <48. My doctor said there is a fairly newer ultra sensitive test for the viral load.
Has anyone heard of this? Or is this just a newer guideline, etc.

Brooklynpoz,

I've heard of this, but I don't really know much about it.

I was wondering why you posted this in the Long Term Survivors forum, being you were only diagnosed in 2004?  It probably should have gone in Living With.  Just sayin'.

I wasn't sure where to post my question. I thought perhaps " long term survivors" may have members with a little more insight in regards to my question. I apologize to the site, if I posted in the incorrect forum.

Well to answer you honestly... I never heard of the breakdown for viral load as this <48.... I've always recieved <50... meaning non-detectable... Why not sit down and ask your doctor about this new calibration of your viral load... and then let us know what he says... it would be interesting to hear his answer to this question... John

BrooklynPoz (I'm in Brooklyn and POZ too!):

My VL test has been showing the same thing since December.  I've been told the test is slightly more sensitive now, that's all.

Indeed, my labs in February and June had a level of detection of 48, too.  The named assay is different from the October labs with a threshold of 50. 

I don't know which amuses me more--that my doc orders the ultra-sensitive in the event I beat the bugs under 400 on my own or that my insurance carrier sends me information every month and calls me every other month about the importance of starting antiretroviral therapy!

Hey,

My new "magic number" is also <48

(but I wouldn't have freaked out if it had been 49)   ;)

I also was told it's just slightly "more sensitive" now.  (I just wish everyONE at the clinic was "slightly more sensitive"!)

Same here. My latest labs had me as <48.

My doc hadn't paid much attention until I pointed it out.

Wow! its a small world... my dad was from Brooklyn NY... and my ex resides in Brooklyn... I've been there but, I prefer the warmer climate of the south... have a great day! John
