you might want to think twice about moving to
Tennessee.  Read Mike's (tnboy) latest entry about Discontent in the Great State of Tennessee.

I live in Tn and believe me it would not be my first choice for health care. In fact, though I wax romantic about being a southerner I would steer clear of moving below the Mason-Dixon line. Southern states always rank near the bottom when it comes to health care and services. Go as far north as possible...Canada still an option?

I don't think HIV health care in TN is a bad as people are making it out to be.

Seriously, the difference in the ADAP qualification is only 50% (or 1/6th lower) than Pennsylvania.  Now, I'm not particularly knowledgeable with Tennessee but I'd assume the cost of living is somewhat lower than the northeast US.  I really wonder if that guy in the other thread has received the correct information, though of course he's not fully disclosed details of his income so hard to say.

My concern in terms of living in other states is not ADAP qualifications so much but rather the quality of medical treatment, access to good specialists and so forth.

Sometimes I dream of moving to Savannah, GA but I'm scared.

Tnboy (Mike) did not receive SSI payments BEFORE his SSDI payments started because he had a LTD plan he purchased through his former employer. If he had not purchased that LTD plan & received SSI before SSDI payments started he would have been  placed on TennCare & he wouldn't have the problem he is having now.
His case is an exception to the rule, not the norm.

No, I understand this.  But he's not getting anything but SSD now, and using Medicare Part D.

What I don't understand is why he's paying $400/month for meds now that he has Medicare Part D.  At least where I live ADAP is considered the second payer, and they pay (within what's listed med-wise on their formulary) whatever Medicare Part D does not.

The only way he'd not qualify, at least here, is if he went over the 350% of federal poverty level with whatever he's getting from SSD.  Like I stated, the difference between the two states is only 50%.

It's not the healthcare...it's the access. I would put the quality of healthcare I received with TennCare as top notch. Without TennCare I receive nothing and cross my fingers every time I get the sniffles. I use RyanWhite/ADAP which covers my meds and labs and that is it. Without some type of healthcare coverage I guess it really doesn't matter where you live.

Maybe one of you can explain in more detail what TennCare actually is, as obviously I don't really know.  And how it is funded.

Is it what covers HIV treatment for folks on Medicaid, as opposed to Medicare?

I'd move to Tennesee in a new york second. Leaning towards eastern Tennesse. These Ohio winters are getting to me. Dreadful freezing and subzero temps during January thru March! I think Morton Salt has got the right idea.

Thanks for your responses. Again, this gives me something to think about. The ADAP qualifications dont seem to be to bad. Ive never had any health issues of any sort but when i do i do want to make sure that im taken care of. And YES, Canada is still an option. Im just researching everywhere cause i only wanna move once. A friend of mine was saying that Nashville was an awsome place to live and i see that buying a house is completely affordable. Its kind of a downer slowly realizing that i cant just pick up and move anywhere i want to. Its a drag to say the least but its not gonna stop me from fulfilling my dreams. Its just gonna make it more of a challange to achieve them.  Im up for it.

Ryan White/ADAP is not going to cover your healthcare. For the most part it will only cover labs and meds. I think we are on a waiting list here in the volunteer state.

I have an issue that I brought to the attention to "Del Vineyard" in Nashville concerning this ADAP program and my medication. After voicing my question and my concern, he wanted to end the call and I was approached and given the "i could care less" attitude.

In my opinion, if he was concerned about my matter, which was a very legitimate question, He could have given some advice on my issue or make some suggestions addressing my concern, however, the call ended with an, "i could care less" attitude. I was very suprised with the outcome of the call to his department.

You could always come live in the beautiful mountains of WV.  Of course our PID has been MIA for over 2wks.

Now, I have a serious question: what is ADAP?  When I was growing up it was alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention.

AIDS Drug Assistance Program.  It helps provide meds for folks like me who are now too dirt poor to afford them and without insurance.

Thanks hun!  I'll make a note of it for future reference.  I assume every state has the program?  Is it through a state agency (like DHHR) or a private organization?
