worried
« on: August 28, 2012, 08:49:00 pm »
So my story.

Last week (monday), I went on vacation, and ended up having sex with a sex worker on the Wednesday (exactly 1 week ago). The sex was quick (30-40 seconds), not rough in any way, and was protected

A few hours later I felt a strange feeling in my penis, kind of an uncormfatable tingling, I became convinced I caught an STD. I began to panic. If I can catch an STD, I can also catch AIDS. Then I began to worry that the condom broke.

From last Saturday (3 days after exposure) I began to get symptoms.
Saturday - Woke up with a stomach ache, and I've had a lack of appetite since this day.
Sunday - Woke up in the middle of the night, sweating a little, Strange feeling in head (like I was going to get sick)
Monday - about 9pm, my forehead was red, I didn't check my temperature, but I felt like a fever. I slept around 12am, re-awoke at 3am/4am and the fever was gone. and had some kind of noticeable scab/irritation on forehead.
Tuesday - Felt better, but still getting strange dreams.
Wednesday - Feel even better, maybe 95%.
Symptoms not experienced - bad night sweats, chills, swollen lymphs, sore throat, cough, sneezing, fatigue, muscle acheness, In fact my body has felt ok.
So, I've been spending the last 3-4 days looking up symptoms, reading about HiV, etc..making myself feel worse. Yesterday, I went to the hospital and an STD test came back negative, so the feeling in my penis isn't related to an STD. Which I guess makes my worries of condom breakage feel less stressful. So my questions are.

Condom Breakage
What chances are there the condom broke after 30-40 seconds of gentle sex? Would I feel it broke, would she? After we finished the condom looked visually intact, but stupidly I didn't thouroughly check it. Would it be obvious to see any breakage? I guess she would have said something if she saw.

ARS symptoms.
Do my symptoms match those of ARS? Is it too soon for sypmtoms to appear?

Test
Do you think i should get a HiV test around the 6 week point?

In all likelyhood I know I'm probably been paranoid. Its just I usally don't get sick, and it's all happened now, right after this incident.

Had you had a condom failure you would have known without a doubt.

Ok thanks.
When you say I'd have known without a doubt. Do you mean i'd feel the condom break while inside her, or visually after, or both? When a condom breaks does the whole thing kind of collapse?

I know we shouldn't take about symptoms, but I'd like to confirm ARS would most likely take place 2-4 weeks after. 3-4 days after is extremely unlikey?

Anyway, thanks for replying

Jamie,

You did not have a risk for hiv infection.

Condoms have been proven to prevent hiv infection. There have been three long-term studies of couples where one is positive and one is negative. In the couples who used condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, but no barrier for oral activities, not one of the negative partners became infected with hiv. Not one.

When a condom breaks, it is VERY obvious. It would be hanging off your penis and yes, you may have felt it as well. Many people also report hearing a pop. Your condom didn't break.

Here's what you need to know in order to avoid hiv infection:

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together.

To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex without a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

ALTHOUGH YOU DO NOT NEED TO TEST SPECIFICALLY OVER PROTECTED INTERCOURSE, anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results.

Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv. Some of the other STIs can be present with no obvious symptoms, so the only way to know for sure is to test.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!

Thanks.
My mind is at ease now, so you can delete or close this thread. Theres alot of inaccurate and false information about HIV infection out there which fuels peoples' worries and fears. I'd like to thank the members of this site for providing accurate and honest feedback. Youve really made me feel better, thanks.
