Last freaking project of the semester
« on: December 07, 2006, 02:54:56 am »
Hurray! it's done! now all I have left to look forward to are finals <insert wretching vomit sound HERE>

The project was on how HIV is treated differently in both the blogoshpere and the mainstream media. It's how I found this site actually.

I must say, some of the posts in here gave me a huge amount of insight into the realities of the global HIV situation.

Biggest difference noted: The mainstream media treats HIV as though it no longer exists in the developed world, or if it does it is strictly a problem in the black and latino minorities. Try as I may, I coudln't find a single mainstream publication that breathed a word about people dying of AIDS on ADAP waiting lists.

It strikes me as strange that the US and Canada funnel billions of dollars into international AIDS aid when the problem here is still so very far from controlled.

I don't think you will have any problems with the finals...take some Maxalon that will stop the vomiting... :D

Regarding the rest of your post..I have trouble getting this information across to the Meds students I talk too...and if they are not listening then who the hell is..as you so rightly stated the problen is far from controlled.

Hugs

This country has always been in denial about HIV/AIDS. From day one.

The media has totally dropped the ball. Except for the very rare article or one of those "good news for AIDS victims" headlines about some possible new drug, the whole subject is nowhere until the annual AIDS "holiday" on World AIDS Day or the international conference every two years. Ugh.

That's why I am so grateful when anyone speaks up anywhere about it and when I see someone wearing a red ribbon pin.

THE AIDS EPIDEMIC IS NOT OVER! I say it everywhere that I can. That occasional thunking sound you hear might be from me hitting my head against the wall in frustration. Then I stop hitting my head and get on with the next thing at hand.

I'm happy to read about the project you chose to do. Well done!
Cheers,
Andy Velez

From a totally anthropological perspective, I think it has a whole lot to do with us developed nations hating to admit that our shit stinks too. It's so much easier to rally behind a fashionalble cause if the people who are dying are on the other side of the world, poor, black and completely beyond the possibility of ever sitting at your dining room table. I guess it makes people feel better about the very real chance that they too could get HIV then AIDS and then die if the problem is totally removed from their everyday life. We all want to 'help' with problems like AIDS and hunger and poverty and disease so long as all we have to do is write a cheque, send it away and never have to see it face to face.

*sigh* when we we learn...
