How Many Supplements-
« on: March 23, 2011, 10:00:34 pm »
Ok so I have read so much about vitamins and supplements I have no clue where to go from here.  I currently take Atripla with an undetectable VL and CD4% 41 and CD4 439, but I have read so much research that I have overloaded the brain.

Currently I take-
Alive Men's Multivitamin
FishOil
Calcium Citrate w/ D3 (prevent bone loss)
Vitamin D3-1000mg
CoQ10 Ubiquinol-200

But I want to know if I should add Milk Thistle to cleanse my liver, Turmeric to help reduce immune inflamation, Spirulina, Baby Aspirin, N-acetylcysteine, Natrol or whatever larch tree Majic Johnson uses, and Alpha Lipoic Acid?  I mean can you overload on all this stuff.? Granted I eat super healthy but there are so many studies that even say statins might help inflammation in HIV, this might help that and blah blah blah.  I wish my doctor would know more about off script medicine and vitamins.  I get all my vitamins and levels checked on my full blood work but I just want to be ahead of the game.  I know taking my Atripla is th emost important but what can you do to help the body more.  What is everyone else taking and what do their doctors say.  I dont want to go nuts but a family member of mine had prostate conacer and his doctor 5 years ago stressed vitamin d and then 5 years later they now say everyone should be taking vitamin d, so he was already ahead of the game.  Whats the concesus on supplements and HAART

Turmeric is really difficult to take, because only 1 % of it is absorbed in blood.
To boost the absorption you have to take it with pineapple, black pepper and warm oily food.
Which was like a ritual to me.

For reduction of HIV induced inflammation,
I take:
1) aspirin, 100 mg a day
2) melatonin, 5g a day [before going to bed]
3) taurine, 6g
4) selenium 200 mg a day
5) zinc 50 mg a day
:)

1. too much of any supplement is not too good, especially in the case of antioxidants, because they can act as oxidants if taken in large doses (for example vitamin C)

2. elevated concentration of vitamin E has been linked to higher cardiovascular risk:
