Credit Card Fraud in Montreal
« on: October 02, 2006, 01:49:04 pm »
We got a call from the bank last week.  One of David's credit cards had been used in Montreal a couple days prior.  Now, we really like Montreal and would like to return, but not this soon!  Whoever used it must have scanned it at one of the restaurants.  They used the card to buy $70 worth of gas last week.  Did anybody else have any fraudulent charges appear on any of their cards?

I'm going to check right now! I don't remember whether I gave anyone my card per-se......I think I only used the ATM's and used cash for everything, but you better believe I'm signing in to my account right now!
Sorry this happened to you David. What a crapper...... >:(

None for me, I keep a pretty close watch.  Did you use it any place besides restaurants?

Actually, it wasn't mine; it was other D's.  I think that the only place he used it was the cash machine and restaurants.  I thought I remembered something about somebody else having some sort of trouble with their card and unauthorized charges, but I could be wrong.

Thanks for the note David.  I hadn't noticed anything yet, but I'm guilty of not keeping close tabs on my bill.  I think it was Gary who had an unauthorized charge, (this was while we were there).

Hey Folks,

Other David here.

I went to my bank today and the card was used in Toronto for a $70.23 purchase the one minute later is was tried for another $68.14 and the system declined that one. The card was 'full scan' meaning it was swiped through a machine and not keyed. Since I could show the bank rep. I have the card the money was replaced. I only used it at four food places where the card was out of my site. I used another card while there and have cancelled it. If it was one of the waiters at one of the places we ate...I want my tip back.

Even though this happend I still had a wonderful time in Montréal and will return but I'll use a card that is only good on the days we are there  ;D

How can it be "full scan" if you have the card?  Does that mean they have a little handheld machine that they swipe and it stores the info from the card??  Seems like I saw that on TV once, but didn't really believe it!  that sucks!

Yep, that's EXACTLY how they do it.

I am out in Las Vegas on vacation (great fun!)  but it was my debit card that got compromised in Montreal.  I am certain that it happened at the Hotel Bourbon where we had the wedding reception.  You might recall they had to run the cards downstairs and bring them back up.  Mine was run and then a few minutes later two $600 charges were attempted from Mexico.  My card was frozen (the fraud alert software caught the second fraudulent transaction.)  When I got home, the bank investigated the first transaction and gave me a provisional credit.  Now I have a new debit card.

Before I left for Vegas I called my bank and let them add a note to my record that I was in Las Vegas this week.  They are not to honor charges from any other location between Monday and Thursday.

It is a sad sign of the times that even when you are very careful, you still can get robbed.

By the way...Vegas is wonderful.  I am staying on the Strip this time at Luxor (the pyramid.)  Not sure this would work well with a large AMG group, but it sure is a fun city to visit.

I was caught in a credit card fraud while I was in Toronto this past March...apparently they charged 700.00 in the U.P about a week later.  At some clothing store! I barely spend 30 bucks a month on clothes, let alone 700!  Silly theives
