NY Gov's proposed ADAP slash.
« on: December 19, 2008, 12:05:59 am »
This really scares me.  I count on this for my meds.  I definitely could NOT afford them otherwise.
I know that it doesn't necessarily mean it will pass but it makes me very anxious.

Anyone on here who knows much more about these things than me who could provide some
perspective?

Thanks Scott

P.S. These are basically the same story.  The first is more comprehensive.  The second is the condensed version on the POZ homepage.

Yikes.... I hope they work this out..... I also hope other states don't get any similar ideas.
Don't obsess over the wrong things.  Life isn't about your numbers, it isn't about this forum, it isn't about someone's opinion.  It's about getting out there and enjoying it.   I am a person with HIV - not the other way around.

According to the article, looks like New York State's contribution to ADAP was about 33%, and (Federal) Ryan White Act accounted for 67%.  To lose one-third of the funding is devastating if that proves to be the case.  The "mix" between Federal and State ADAP funding varies by state.  Here in Arizona, the State contributes 10% and Ryan White funds 90%.  No budget cut to my knowledge could go beyond the state contribution, though in New York's case of course that is not much comfort.

This news is absolutely terrifying.  It used to be that New York's ADAP program was among the most generous, in terms of its formulary, etc., in the country.  The fact that both New York State and New York City depend so much on taxes resulting from the Wall Street economy is at the core of this abysmal situation.

Earlier posts here wondered what the national (and international) economic recession (I maintain it's a depression, and I believe it will get worse) would mean for HIV/AIDS assistance programs.

Well, now we know....And we thought it was bad before....

P.S.  Look what's happening in South Carolina(!!!):

We've got budget problems here in CAlifornia too.  It seems to go up a billion $'s every day.  It's a serious problem but the governor ('GOVERNATOR') and all the other elected officials have lost all credibility

Except Maria (The Governator's wife...Maria Shriver).  The story is that Arnold was all ready to cut ADAP but it was Maria who told him no.  Everthing else is up for grabs.

It helps when you're sleeping with the enemy.

I'm just hoping that our legislature doesn't approve this slightly cruel cut.
I understand having to cut some of the contribution but ALL of it???
