Title: World cup
Post by: anniebc on June 11, 2010, 07:25:20 pm
I'm  great soccer fan and have just finished watching the South Africa and Mexico game (I had to record it because of the ridiculous time it's on here).

South Africa did themselves proud and played a great game, Khune got the best save of the match and SA scored the first goal of the World cup, so they have to be happy with that.

I actually have Mexico down for the Quarter Finals...but time will tell.

Good luck to your team Jan, hope we get to see some good matches.  When I was in England and they had elimination matches, Emma and others were very much into it.  So many folks worldwide are such fans and almost none of those folks care a lick about baseball, that's for sure.  :)  But Jan did get to see her first ball game last August!

Have fun all you soccer balls. ;)

Watched a rerun of RSA/Mex.  Good match.  Am watching South Korea and Greece now....Greece is atrocious.  Will venture down to a pub that's been rented out by Americans to watch USA v England!!!  Should be a good one.  Though I dread going back to work on Monday.

I can see how productivity drops significantly during WC.

I drew Australia in one of my pools....so I'm going for USA, England and Australia (in that order!).

I can see how productivity drops significantly during WC.

Here in Brazil, most offices close during games.  Our first game is tuesday, 15:30 local time, and my office is closing 15:00.  Every pub, bar and restaurant have already set up big TVs and projectors.  We love it!

Well I just watched more soccer than I ever saw.  Now, I'm a guy who thinks football is kicking at the beginning of the game or for field goals or punts...But anyway, I guess it was a good thing for the USA that they somehow got a tie with England but of course I feel bad for Emma and my new British pals.  For Cliff I guess a tie is good for him???, folks in England are probably a bit down right now considering it was not long ago the U.S. could lose to Kazhakastan or the Ivory Coast already.  And there are so many soccer rivalries, love and knowledge of the game and of course betting worldwide, let's face it...I feel bad for the English goaltender Green, sometimes an athelete never lives down a gaffe, what with the gift give away goal he gave up. People, while many can be kind and sympathetic, can be tough on the poor guys, like the pitcher who gave up a pennant winning homer in the botom of the 9th inning.  The thing I didn't understand is they got to like 94:13 or so and stopped the game...I had no idea why the game ended, was it like a ref deciding no one would ever score again or a boxing ref figuring someone was too banged up to continue or is 94:13 a magic number, like 666 or something? ;D  I think they had the clock going in the wrong direction anyhow ;)...Oh well if the poor guys played overtime the game might go 24 hours or more! :D )

Be well all, go safe and enjoy your football, er soccer.

And good luck to Jan's New Zealand team!!!

Jody :)

Well, 94:13 was the total playing time. According to the rules, it's just 90:00 (= 45:00 minutes per half). Then, if someone is injured and has to be carried off the field, or if there is some other sort of delay, the ref gives extra playing time to compensate for the time lost. In this case, there were some 4 odd minutes extra to play.  ;D

Of the games I've watched, I liked Argentina the most. Quite energetic and heading straight to the goal. England was disappointing. I hope Rooney wakes up soon.

What I find really annoying with this World Cup is the incredible noise of the vuvuzela things. It sounds like the game is set in a huge bee hive. No songs, no chants, no breath taking silence, just the continuous buzz. Must be difficult for the players and the refs to understand their own words.

Thanks C - I need to learn quite a bit more about the game, too many different colored uniforms on the filed and I don't know what's what, and I am glad you brought up that incesant noise, those horns that went off all game, it was awful and I kept having to lower the volume.  If that continues it will cut my viewing time.

Anyway good luck to your team!

Hi

This is how it's going to be played out (in my mind at least ..  ;D)

Quater Final...England v Argentina......Brazil v Italy

Semi Finals.....England v Brazil......Italy v Argentina

FINAL....Brazil v Argentina.

Of course I have been known to be wrong in past World Cups.. :D.

We will make a soccer fan of you yet Jody.

You just might be right, Jan!  We'll see.  England needs to step up though.

And C is absolutely right about those fucking vuvuzelas.  It is really annoying.  I can't watch the tv at a decent volume, as its starts to sound like a fucking fly is flying around my ear.  Uuuuurrrrrgggg.

Watching Slovenia v Algeria....I guess whoever wins will be top of our group!

I forgot all about the England v. US match. My bf turned up not long after half-time and asked me why I didn't have the match on. Match? What match? ;D He was not impressed.

Neither was I, to tell the truth. 1-1 draw? Colour me disappointed.

Have tickets to US v Algeria! Which given Slovenia's win today could be the difference of moving on or not for the US. I figured we'd lose to the Eng but the tie is great. The US is still undefeated in World Cup play against their old colonial oppressors. ;)

It's not really the sport that's the issue, Australia isn't a soccer nation. It's more about being beaten by the Bosch as a point of principle.

In South Africa.

The Socceroos needn't bother coming home. Hopefully the Federal Government will cancel their passports or something. >:(

O.K., I know virtually nothing about soccer.  So how can a 1 - 1draw be considered "greatest result in history"?

Doesn't it mean they tied?  How does that work?  Neither team won?  Again how does that work?

Shouldn't they just go into overtime or something until someone gets ahead?

Italy was heavily favored to win, so by not losing NZ performed better than expected.

They don't do overtime in the first round. A win = 3 points, a draw = 1 point and a lose = 0 points. If two teams in a group have the same amount of points, they go by goal difference to determine who is ahead.

For example, group C looks like this so far:

Group C teams     W     D     L     GD     PTS
Slovenia             1      1      0       1       4
USA                   0      2      0       0       2
England             0      2      0       0       2
Algeria             0      1      1      -1       1

All group C teams have one more match. England needs to beat Slovenia and the US needs to beat Algeria - and hopefully, England will make at least one more goal than the US. :)

You can see all the groups at http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2010/default.stm

Hi guys

Well it's 10.09am and I crawled out of bed 10 minutes ago read my email and then logged on.

The first 20 minutes saw NZ score the first goal and take control of the game, then they gave away a penalty to Italy, they scored their first goal of course, we pretty much lost control of the ball at that point..so the best we could do was to keep the Reigning Champs to a draw, and we did..so I'm happpy with that, we can split hairs and say they got their only goal on a penalty shot and not through skill alone, but it wasn't for the want of trying, but NZ's defence was a good one.

Ann..did the happy dance  before going back to bed..and thank you for explaining it to RAB..honestly some peopel just can't grasp the simpl things in life can they.. :D

OK people, it's not soccer, it's FOOTBALL.

If the rest of the world can refer to "American football", why can't Americans refer to "international football"? The football played on this side of the pond is the older form, and it's proper name should take precedence. I mean jeeze, not this shit again ...er... Just seconds after England had their full-time win against Slovenia (1-0), comes the news that the USA scored an injury time goal to win against Algeria (1-0).

That means both the USA and England are through to the second round!

It's a measure of how emotionally all-over-the-place I am at the minute that I burst into tears when England's game was declared FULL TIME - and I'm still crying now. Sheesh, I've never cried over football in my life.

It's interesting that the term "soccer" is not of American origin. It originated in England in the 1880's. Even The World Soccer Magazine is published by a British publishing company.

Post by: Ann on June 24, 2010, 08:19:27 am
Gee Rab, I guess you really can't teach an old dog new tricks, cuz soccer football is one of the easiest to understand games ever. Even I understand it. See what I mean?

When I said full time win, I meant that when the game ended, we'd (England) won. We made our goal at 22 minutes.

When I said injury time goal, I meant that you Yanks waited until 92 minutes to score a goal. What a freaking heart-stopper. If that goal hadn't been made, then you Yanks would be licking your wounds and going home today. You'd be out, finito benito. Gone, done and dusted, humiliated. So there. :)

A football match lasts 90 minutes, plus how many extra minutes during which play was stopped to attend to an injured player. They don't stop the clock when that happens, they just add the appropriate amount of time at the end of the match. It's usually somewhere between two and five minutes. I think you guys had 3 minutes of injury time and made that friggin goal just in the nick of time. And stole our first place in the group. Bastards. Lucky so-and-so's.

There are six segments of the World Cup.

The first round includes 32 teams. There are eight groups, A through H, and each group has four teams. Each team in a group plays the other three teams in that group. The top two teams in each group after the three games go on to the second round.

The winners of one group play the team that came second in their neighbouring group. The second round is only one match for each team. There are 16 teams in the second round, so there are eight matches.

The winners of the eight matches then play in the quarter finals. Again, each team plays one match, so there are four matches.

The four winners of those matches go on to the semi-finals, and the two winners of those games go on to the final. Just to be clear, the winner of the final is the winner of the World Cup and the loser came in second.

In between the semi-finals and the final, there is a competition to determine who wins third place, where the two losing teams from the semi-finals have a match.

Clear as mud? I thought so. :D

And no, Rab, you can't have the World Cup just cuz you're "the cutest". You're not. We are. We also play better. :) Hell, all the teams are eye candy when you get right down to it.

I hope we give Germany the kicking the Aussies couldn't manage.

For the record, Ann. The rules of soccer were agreed upon by the separate associations only in 1863. The rules of Australian Rules Football aka Australian Rules aka Aussie Rules (aka football to those in Victoria, SA, WA and Tassie) were agreed upon in the 1860. So, just which is the older form?

PS. Go the Allwhites tonight!!! And, how well is the USA going?

Ok, I'm furiously knitting my brow now.

Aren't we sorta comparing apples and oranges?

American football and Australian football are closer cousins to Rugby, no?

And football/soccer is not very much like the football games in the rugby family, right? Similar in the fact that all these games involve a bunch of over-paid men all chasing after one ball, but different otherwise.

I just like teasing Yanks. :)

The Yanks came first in our group, we (England) came second. The Yanks play Ghana on Saturday (should have been us playing Ghana if it weren't for that flaming 92 minute goal) and England plays Germany on Sunday (should have been Slovenia playing the Hun, if it weren't for that damn 92 minute goal. Whenever England draws Germany for a match, I always think of the Football Truce of Chirstmas Day (http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/christmas-1915-world-war-one.htm) in 1915 when the Germans and English came out of their trenches and played some footie in no-man's-land. That was sweet.

However. As for Sunday's match, Germania est delenda!!!

You better wake up Mr Rooney then. And start practicing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txNLo5mame0&hd=1) those (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpFFZMREce4) penalties (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2iNGFRtLkI).   :o

I'm all for the mother country now. C'mon England!!! Beyond that, as an Aussie I have a soft spot for the underdog so I'll also get behind the USA.

Let the real games begin now.

PS. Ann. Aussie Rules closest relation would be gaelic football, but any link seems tenuous. It was around a long time before Webb Ellis picked up a ball and ran with it for the birth of Rugby Union. It's a game unto itself really, and not my favourite. It's a southern game. The best description of it I've ever heard is it's like sea gulls chasing a chip.

You better be careful missy.  You're still legally tethered to the US and if you don't stop this treasonous blather, I'll have the Pres. send one of the predator drones to the Isle of Man.  That'll teach you!

Bollocks, now I have to survive another 4 years before I get to see England win a World Cup.

Woeful performances throughout the whole tournament, big name players who failed to turn up when it mattered.

Only upside is listening to the post-mortem on Radio 5 Live.

Well played Germany though I wonder how things might have turned out if that goal had been given - how did the officials miss that!!!!!!!

England did ok, if you forget the defending bit.  They looked really slow and unfit compared to the Germans.  Cue the blame game.

Bringing the stars worked for the US in Olympic basketball, but doesn't seem to work for England.  Shame.

Thanks Emma. I have no idea how this goal could have been overlooked. Sometimes things like this happen. With respect to the Wembley goal 66, I think we're now quits... Anyways, think positive: You were spared the horrible experiences of yet another desastrous penalty shoot-out.  ;)

Next round hopefully against Argentina, which is another one of our favourite enemies rivals!

Sorry to hear about England, unfortunately we only get the highlights over here in NZ, and they don't show them until either 5pm or 11.30pm, so can't comment on the game.

I think they start showing the games live from the Quarter Finals onwards...at least I hope they bloody  do.

Only two of my original predictions are still in the running...Brazil and Argentina.~~sigh~~~

I feel bad for my friends in England and on the Rock of the Irish sea, but happy for Cerrid of course.  Anyway now one of New York's sensationalist tabloids says that Americans think soccer is stupid anyway.

Oh well I know less than anyone about soccer, sorry football, ;) -except maybe Rab- but would replay be a good idea if it's not already used or would that take away the human element.? Also folks are saying on TV and radio that there is alot of "flopping" going on, I don't know I think when a young man gets slammed when he is in a prone position (not that I have ever been prone ;)) he is bound to flop, uh I mean drop.

Oh well personally I wasn't too sad that the U.S. lost to Ghana, I figure those fellows got a big thrill and could use a lift for their folks back hone in Africa.  So I suppose I will never be too passionate about soccer, football, kickball to me really, you just can't teach an old dog new tricks Jan (just like that Rab fellow).  There is great beauty and grace to the sport I suppose but I still figure any sport where you've got to use your head can't be too smart anyhow.  :)

But well done for your NZ team  Jan, they did well with so many ties. One more damned goal for the Kiwi boys !!!

Jody :)

Of course you can use it Ann. It's the most apt description I've heard for the game yet.

Gemini - too funny. 4 more years till they win. More chance you'll win the lottery. It's kinda fun watching them choke every 4 years. Bit like the All-blacks in Rugby Yawnion.

Jan, you'll have to move back to Aus next time to watch every game live. This time round we even have commentary in three languages - Strayan, and the language of the two competing teams.
Must admit, i was surprised you even had tellie. thought you might have had to listen on short wave radio or summin'.  ;D

Who do I go for now though. mmmmm. Japan, as the last team from Asia or Argentina as the homeland of the father of the twins. decisions, decisions

That was the only good thing about the game, at least from an English perspective. The Germans played well and deserved to win - yes, I'll concede that. Somewhat grudgingly.  Hrmph.

Well I finally got to see the England v Germany game, and have to agree Germany played the better game..but very bad refereeing, England should hv egone out on a draw.

I'm still going for Brazil v Argentina for the Final.

Argentina v Brazil isn't too far fetched. However, I think the German youngsters are bit better as a team, so I think Germany will beat Argentina. It's a pity because I'm quite a fan of Maradona and I'd love to see his incredible career crowned by the title.

I hope the Dutchies get the title. It'll be a first time for either of them teams. Last time the Netherlands managed to get to the final was 32 years ago, they were then defeated by Argentina. Before, 1974, they lost against Germany. In their third trial, it would be just fair. But Spain will give them a hard time. A very hard time. Good luck Dutchies!

For those of you who are computerly challenged (~looks at Mr Hell~) and don't understand how to follow the links provided earlier in this thread, here's what the action looks like so far:

QUARTER FINALS

Netherlands 2-1 Brazil

Uruguay 1-1 Ghana   Uruguay goes on to win 4-2 in penalties

Germany 4-0 Argentina (don't cry for me!)

Paraguay 0-1 Spain

SEMI-FINALS

Netherlands 3-2 Uruguay

Germany 0-1 Spain

THIRD PLACE

To be played Saturday 10 July @ 19:30 BST

Uruguay v. Germany

WORLD CUP FINAL

To be played Sunday 11 July @ 19:30 BST

Netherlands v. Spain

May the best team win!

Quite so! By now, you've probably all heard of Paul, the Psychic Octopus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_the_Octopus).

English-born Paul the octopus has achieved global fame after correctly predicting the results of all of Germany's games at the tournament in South Africa. The psychic cephalopod is kept at Sea Life in Oberhausen, which is in western Germany. Here’s how he picks: His keepers present Paul with the choice of two glass boxes, both containing a mussel but each bearing the flag of a different country. Whichever box of food he opens first is considered his prediction.

With his 9 brains and 3 hearts, he predicted all 6 German matches during this WC right.

Finally, here are Paul's predictions for the last two games of the tournament (warning: spoiler!):

Germany - Uruguay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6PFNSM56bo&hd=1)
Spain - Netherlands (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5JtrAas2aM&hd=1)

Johnny Heitinga (Netherlands) got sent off at 109 minutes after picking up a red card. The Netherlands had a total of eight yellow cards and one red. Spain had five yellow cards.

I thought the overtime was the best part of the match and I even cheered when Spain made their goal, even though I was rooting for the Netherlands. It was just good to see a goal finally being made after all those balls flying over the bar.

And I was relieved to not have to watch a penalty shoot out. It's the only time I bite my nails since I was a little kid.

Well done Spain. Good thing I didn't place any bets on the Netherlands (I generally don't gamble - not with money, anyway!) because I'd be pissed off and poorer today. :)

Sigh. Everytime, the WC is over, I fall into an empty void. No more betting, no vuvuzelas, no players exchanging their sweaty shirts, no flags, no drama. It usually takes me a week or so to recover and fill the vacuum.

From what I heard, the organisation of the WC was better than expected. But there's not much talk about other issues: Lots of giant stadions left over in SA, will they ever get filled again? And did the WC work out economically? Billions that went to the WC instead of HIV care or providing for the poor. What do you think? Will Brazil 2014 be any better?

Finals are often boring in a lot of sports - teams too hesitant/scared to do something wrong. It's usually the game before that the best football is played.

London will go off during the Olympics, Cliff. Make sure you are there and get to as many events as possible. I had a blast back in 2000. Sydney rocked for a couple of weeks there.
