The Wedding
« on: August 18, 2006, 03:30:37 pm »
I had the privilege of sharing breakfast with Ric and Thom after our memorial service and just a few hours prior to their wedding this afternoon.  What a remarkable story of their journey to this ceremony!  I am so familiar with our rather silly custom of seperating the groom and the bride on their wedding day and hiding the bride's face to the last minute.  Instead, Ric and Thom were preparing to visit the florist after breakfast and continue planning this day together.  For many of us, it will be the first time to witness a gay marriage.  For me, it will be a little bittersweet...I would have loved to have this opporutnity before I lost my lifetime partner Michael to AIDS in 1993.

Nevertheless, it is just thirty short minutes to the ceremony and I am so proud of this wonderful couple.  They already know that happiness does not magically spring from a ritual ceremony, but rather happiness comes when we learrn to share the bitter and the sweet.  Their willingness to share and publicly affirm their relationship with us will count as one of the most extraordinary gifts I have ever received on someone else's wedding day.

I am sure everyone joins me in congratulating Ric and Thom and wishing them much continued joy and happiness.

To the Grooms:

In a world where marriage is held captive, this brings hope that one day marriage truly will be about love and not gender. I once heard a definition of marriage that has stuck with me. It goes something like this:

"We need a witness to our lives. There's a billion people on the planet, so what does any one life really mean? But in a marriage, you're promising to care about everything. The good things, the bad things, the terrible things, the mundane things... all of it, all of the time, every day. You're saying 'Your life will not go unnoticed because I will notice it. Your life will not go un-witnessed because I will be your witness'."

May you two have joy and stability in your union, and may you always know in whose heart your home resides.

Best wishes to both of you on this happy day!

Molten

Love takes no pleasure in other people's sins, but delights in the truth. It is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope, and to endure whatever comes." - 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, adaptation in A Walk To Remember

Gary...

It was a beautiful ceremony and I too found it bittersweet remembering my baby and our discussions about getting married.  Like your Michael, David passed away and you and I are left to carry on...celebrating the joy of others until we ourselves (perhaps) find another to share our lives with...  I commend these guys for having the courage and the level of committement they have taken with each other.  Congradulations guys!  I wish you many years of "togetherness"....and yes ...those wanting details, there were tears of joy and lots of pictures taken.

Montreal ...the experience....Simply fantastic.  Beyond my expectations!
