Hello all, I'm new here. I hope this forum is not judgmental and share my story with people who are in the same situation as me. I was diagnosed with HIV in 2009 trying to join the military how embarrassing  early 2009 I was raped and this person is currently roaming out in the streets why do I believe its him because there is other females before me were involved and I have lost contact with these girls. I was 20 years old and now I'm 24. Most the time I'm happy and not think about it because its only depressing and want to kill that son of ...  I moved to the states he lives in and slowly working on getting him in for justice. But anyways I recently found out I have inf lammed gallstones, had the worst pain ever in my life and called 911 known that I have no insurance  but anyways by the time we got to the hospital the nurses were panicky   specially when they found out I'm HIV+ I felt so unwelcomed there and rushed out there   while I was waiting for the doctor to finalize my papers I heard a nurse outside my room telling other nurses out loud that the person in that room has HIV be careful and the other nurse told her you know shes still in there and it got quiet, than she came to look she seemed embarrassed, than she went back and whispered and than loudly said yea there is no blood but shes HIV+ like hello there was other patients in the ER with their doors open! I was terrified to go out of my room and these people look at me like I'm a alien or something.. I felt crushed I cried not only from the pain but the way I was treated and talked about out side of my room! her voice is stuck in my head and how she kept repeating it like I'm going pass hiv on to them. They were so unprofessional nurses its so sad and I can't get it out of my head. I wasn't able to sleep last night from the way I was treated :-[

Hi Sheesha

Welcome to the forums.

I'm so sorry about the way you were treated, I was a nurse for 30 years and I know that many in the medical field are the worst offenders when it come to stigma and HIV.

How long ago did this happen? you do know you can report these nurses to the Hospital Administration, it may or may not come to anything but at least it will let the Hospital know that their nurses are acting in a very unprofessional way, and let them know if you hear about this happening again you will take it further.

A couple of years ago I had to go in and act as a spokes person for a young nurse who was HIV+ because of an incident with a couple of nurses she worked with, it's amazing what can happen when you bang a few tables and tell them you won't stand for anyone being treated like that, believe me quite a few things changed in that Hospital because of it, and all for the good, so it does pay to speak up.

I hope you can get over this incident and not let a bunch of ignorant nurses spoil things for you, you don't have to be frightened.

I hope you will stay around, the guys here are great and will help you out with any questions you may have.

Take care
Jan

Hi Sheesha,

Welcome to the forums.  I hope you stick around.

Listen to Jan, she knows what she's talking about.  That sounds like a horrible experience and I would definitely let someone higher up know about it.

I'm also sorry about the sexual abuse you exeperienced.  I'm also a survivor of rape, but that's not how I was infected.  I encourage you to seek professional help, and with no insurance, that may mean the local county mental health organization.  They help people without insurance or wealth.

I also encourage you to contact your nearest Aids service organization if you haven't done so already.  They can assist you with getting into medical care, getting medication, support etc.  I think it would be beneficial.

Hang in there and please let us know how it's going.

Sorry to hear about your situation.

It is awfully hard dealing with the disease itself but the embarrassment and stigma that go along with it is sometimes worse.

Hang in there - things will get better.
