Don;t get it
« on: November 27, 2006, 09:57:21 pm »
Last summer i was in the hospital and my Dr. ordered a comlete blood workup, he said that this did not include an HIV test.  my question is wouldnt an HIV infection mess with the other blood tests that were taken, IE low white cell count etc.  Even though it doesnt test for HIV.
My blood work up came back and all my numbers were fine.  I was just wondering if HIV can screw with other blood tests.

There was a study in Africa about using a CBC as a surrogate for advanced HIV disease. However, the study revealed that WBC's were a poor marker for advanced HIV disease. Like it or lump it, the only way to tell if you have HIV is a specific test.

That is sort of what I was saying. Someone looked at whether HIV could affect the CBC results. The answer was no. I wasn't saying that a CBC could detect HIV, but rather the effects of HIV rarely show up on a CBC. Therefore, the only way you can tell whether you have HIV is to take a test specifically for it. Trying to look for HIV among the noise of a CBC doesn't work. Even if you had a specific CD4 cell count that wouldn't indicate HIV. Many things can drop CD4 cell counts and in some people with HIV, the CD4 count can remain somewhat normal. If you are concerned about HIV, test for it.

Fungal woes
« Reply #4 on: February 14, 2007, 06:50:55 pm »
I have a fungus on my toenails that I am going to get treated from the doctor.  I looked and noticed that fungal nails could ibe casued by hiv.  I am not sure if I need to be concerned or if I am just matching syptoms to fears.

My exposure:  as of 2 years ago:

Protected vaginal/anal with sex worker / possible drug user
Unprotected oral give/recieve

Once durning anal/vagiinal discovered a tear in base of condom top perfectly intact.

Condoms always used for penetrative sex.

I would appreciate any insight.

Its a better bet you have athletes foot or something.  you had NO risk of exposure to HIV.  Keep using condoms and you will be protected.

This is in NO way related to HIV.

The same holds true even with multiple partners during that time period with sex workers? ( I since learned my lesson) I havent been with a worker for 2 years.  I think what concerns me the most is the 2 times  ifound tears in the condom base.

It doesnt matter how many partners you had professional or otherwise.  The head of your penis was covered you were protected.

Fungal infection is not specific to HIV infection, nor does most people that have HIV have fungal infections.

snow,

I've merged your new thread into your original thread - where you should post all your additional thoughts or questions. It helps us to help you when you keep all your additional thoughts or questions in one thread.

If you need help finding your thread when you come here, click on the "Show own posts" link under your name in the left-hand column of any forum page.

Please also read through the Welcome Thread so you can familiarize yourself with our Forum Posting Guidelines. Thank you for your cooperation.

Why don't you just go test, collect your negative result and move on? You've allowed this worry to dominate your life for far too long. Testing is the ONLY way to know your hiv status. Hiv is not a guessing game.

You've had protected intercourse. I fully expect you to test negative. Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Keep using those condoms.

White Blood count question
« Reply #10 on: May 26, 2008, 08:17:03 pm »
I had a Dr. tell me my White blood count was low due to a stomach virus.  I asked if this could indicate hiv infection and he said no because HIV affects the white blood cells differently.

Can anyone explain this?

What's more to the point is that ONLY an HIV test taken at the appropriate time can tell you accurately about your HIV status reliably. Everything else is guesswork. Whatever other bloodtests may show as results absolutely cannot be relied upon to tell you about HIV status. And anyone who says otherwise is wrong.

Have you had unprotected intercourse or do you have any other reason to believe HIV might be an issue for you? Or are you just becoming anxious for some other reason? If you have had unsafe sex then you need to get tested. Please clarify.

Andy all my sex with females of unknown hiv status was protected vaginal and anal with non protected oral.

These factors, I am told, do not put me at risk.

I think I am more a victim of OCD then of an HIV infection.

I have been informed that secual encounters I have had do not warrent HIV risk:

Oral
Vaginal
Anal

All protected with a tear once at condom base.  Yet I have these items:

ANal fissure
Dandruff
Fungus nails

anytime you use web MD to look up a malady it suggests HIV infection.  Am I just trying to add up random symptoms here?

Read the following before reposting in your original thread.

Anyone who continues to post excessively, questioning a conclusive negative result or no-risk situation, will be subject to a four week Time Out (a temporary ban from the Forums). If you continue to post excessively after one Time Out, you may be given a second Time Out, which will last eight weeks. There is no third Time Out - it is a permanent ban. The purpose of a Time Out is to encourage you to seek the face-to-face help we cannot provide on this forum.

Thanks Ann, I am sorry for any problems caused by me on the site. I had a chance and called our local testing center and was asked to briefly describe my risks.  I was told since I was not placed in any risk since I was protected and HIV from female to male is much harder to get, they do not feel testing for HIV is wareented however STD tests would be.

I think part of the problem is that almost every maledy I see someone wants to attach an HIV mention to it.  Even drandruff and nail fungus have an HIV disclaimer.  Based on reading this site I see these would be very minor compaired to some of the other HIV symtoms.

I also contacted my DR. who I recently had a checkup with. He said based on what I told him I am not at HIV risk.
