Very anxious - am i infected?
« on: January 07, 2008, 10:15:40 am »
I've been very anxious about getting infected since sleeping with a 21y/o at uni a couple of times.

We didn't have penetrative anal or oral sex but he did finger me. My concern is I wasn't too sure if his hands were clean when he put that into my anus. I'm worried that his pre-cum/semen might have got onto his finger and even though it might have been diluted by the lubes there's still a chance of me contracting the virus.

3 weeks later, I started getting a cold and a very mild fever (37.3C) with swollen glands under the neck (but no other symptoms). It's been almost 5 days now and I'm paranoid as hell.

I asked him about his status and he said he's been tested a few months ago and it was negative.

I'm wondering what's the real risk and should I wait for another 2 months before I get tested? or should I ask for CD4/viral load test?

Hope someone here can help me. The anxiety is driving me absolutely nuts.

Thanks!

You didn't have a risk and you don't need any testing.

Read our lesson on Transmission. There's a link to it in the Welcome thread which opens this section. This epidemic is going to be around for a longtime to come. No one who is out in the world having sex can afford to be unknowing about the basics of HIV. The main risk sexually for HIV is through unprotected vaginal or anal intercourse. So if you are having intercourse the guy has to be wearing a latex condom. Everytime. No exceptions no matter how great he looks or what you think you know about his history.

You were not at risk in the incidents you have been concerned about. There's no need for testing but you do need to get down with the basics of transmission.

but just outta curiosity.. why's there no risk considering there could be contact between his semen and the mucuous membrane of my anus.

or am i just being silly and thinking way too much?

ps i actually spoke to my GP too and she said i really should stop worrying about it.

Yah, you are "thinking" about it too much. HIV is a fragile virus which requires a very receptive setting. Just brushing against your anus does not create such a setting.

Get on with your life and don't spend anymore time fussing over something that's not a risk.

Cheers,
Andy Velez
