YES! Australia & Marriage Equality
« on: November 15, 2017, 05:14:02 pm »
So after nearly two months of polling of the Australian Electorate the results of the Marriage Equality poll is in.

“Should the law be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry?”

The turn out for the postal poll was a whisker under 80%.

Yes 62%                          No 38%
7.82 million responses         4.87 million responses

But the vote is non binding, it is simply a poll. We'll see how our Parliament votes and what the form of the final legislation is.

The senate has passed a bill, with details in the link. It looks like the House of Representatives will pass the bill with no amendments, then off to the Governor General for assent.

Congratulations!

my hubby and I just celebrated our first year of marriage :D I'm keeping my fingers crossed that there won't be a political battle in the future that threatens my new marriage.

Odd, growing up right as "gay rights" were running into "aids advocacy", I used to think I'd never marry; but now, look at me living like the straight folks do. LOL Of course, looking back, my two previous 10-yr relationships where no different anyway from what a marriage is supposed to be - a union of two loving people.

Still, I've always been for the right of same-sex marriage. I think now kids in high school can start having more relationships outside of the closet (the logic being if you can get married then surely you can date openly). it's the start of gay people growing up feeling more "normal" instead of being such "outcasts". hopefully that'll help more gay teens have more self-esteem which should help in lowering the number of gay teen suicides.
