I've used Freedom two or three times now. They go by your CD4 count and if you're in a decent range, your premium is no higher than someone who is not hiv positive. I know this because my partner also took out a travel policy with them and his premium was exactly the same as mine. Luckily I didn't get into a situation where I needed the insurance, but the cover was quite good and included lost or stolen money and/or luggage along with medical needs.

This is interesting.  Working in travel industry, I sell travel insurance frequently.  None of my clients have ever had to fill out a questionaire of any sort regarding their health.  It's as simple as including it in their quote and collecting the premium.  Is it just the opposite in the UK?

The majority of UK health insurance policies - travel or otherwise - won't touch you with a barge pole if you're positive.

My partner and I use ItsSoEasy travel insurance for our annual policies and I can recommend them. They don't ask any CD4 questions, but in common with a lot of insurers these days, they won't insure you against pre-existing medical conditions if you're a smoker. My partner is diabetic but because he's also a smoker, any claim arising directly from his diabetes is specifically excluded.

It's worth mentioning that if you're in a serodiscordant relationship, it's still worth your negative partner taking out travel insurance on your HIV-specific policy; otherwise if you should fall ill and have to return home, there's a good chance that your partner's policy would refuse to cover them because the claim was connected with *your* HIV.

I always use Freedom, just a personal preference.  They offered me an annual policy last time I called to shell out (well, for work to shell out £80 for a 5-day trip to the US).  I find them competitive, eg they are cheaper than my good friend's insurer, and he's HIV-negative.  Lots of people at work use them now, just on price (weird eh?).

Speaking of insurance, I am going next week for an interview for life insurance etc, with a special risks broker, i will report back on this if I remember to keep the appointment  :D

This is kinda curious - for me Freedom was quite a lot more expensive - £136 for an annual worldwide with CD4 583, VL 17,000 and not on HAART. It is fairly obvious to me that this is a lot more than a policy for someone without HIV would be.

It's So Easy, however, was just £99 again for annual worldwide. Needless to say I opted for the latter.

It then sounds like prices with Freedom vary quite a lot according to numbers and whether or not you are under HAART. As always with insurance it pays to shop around.
